Geeze has it really been 5 months since my last Behind the Glass With a Glass? Dang. Well here’s the good news: the drought is over, man! It’s time to sip a drinky-poo and talk photography! But here’s the bad news…I waited so long that I just had too much to talk about. This one is lengthy. Sorry. All these videos are getting too long, I reckon.
In this episode I’ll be enjoying something that sounds better than “a rum and coke” but is really just a rum and coke. It’s got muddled lime in it and it’s called a Cuba Libre. And while I get my buzz on I’ll share a new retrowave inspired photo I took with my Shen Hao TFC 617-A and CineStill 800T film, I’ll give my final thoughts on CineStill, share with you the gorgeous Mamiya RZ67 75mm tilt/shift lens, and discuss the mainstreamification of analog photography.
Old timers will say I’m dumb for talking about film photography going mainstream - “you hipsters think you invented film photography but it was always mainstream” - but it’s true. The analog community is getting bigger and bigger. Sure, film used to be the only option so it was always “mainstream” in a sense, but then it died and no one came to the funeral. Digital curb-stomped it and we looked the other way. But now it’s back from the dead and it’s getting stronger every day. Part of me worries about it getting more popular, but ultimately I think it’s a good thing. And that’s what I’ll be wrestling with in the later part of this video.
As always, thanks for watching, please drink responsibly, and here's to you - cheers!

Photography, cinematography, music, you name it… these are both industries and arts. This generates both creators and technicians, some may be both. Lots of overlap. The music « industry » never completely left the vinyl record, and it’s back big ways. Star movie directors won’t shoot anything else but film. Think Tarantino. One thing I learned is that one technology rarely erases, if at all, an older one. Theater was not replaced by radio, cinema was not replaced by TV, CD did not replaced Vinyl, film was not replaced by digital, and… you still can buy books and papers, don’t you? These all complement themselves, and while one may become more proeminent, the older ones remains to be rediscovered. We should celebrate that. You, surely do. Thanks.

A few years ago I was in Kauai photographing with my Hasselblad 500 cm film camera. I had it on a tripod overlooking a nice landscape. As I was composing the image on the ground glass a man came running up to me in excitement saying “Are you shooting film!” He was so excited to see a “real” camera. I have been shooting film for years, so I was not as excited as this fellow. My 15 seconds of fame.

Ill tell you that when I started watching you I was 100% digital. Now I shoot a Nikon FM2 and a Pentax 6x7 and my film lab is growing! The reason I watched so many film youtubers is because they were mostly focused on the photography, and the gear was second.

When digital first hit and many pro photographers were getting rid of their large format cameras and lenses, I bought as many lenses as I could afford. I kept my Cambo and Crown Graphic and added more RB-67 accessories. Now that film is being rediscovered and prices are moving up, I'm sitting here smiling like a Cheshire cat.

I studied photography in the 1970's in San Francisco during the film years. Am getting back into it and taking the mothballs from my equipment I have not used in decades. I am lucky I don't have to buy equipment now at these prices I have a Mamiya C33,C220, C330, a MInolta SLR, a Leica M3, a Bronica Etrs, a Calumet 4x5 View Camera. All cameras have a assortment of lenses. Also have studio lights, different Umbrellas, and darkroom equipment including a besler enlarger that takes all formats of film by changing lenses and film carrier, also have a Zone V1 16x20 archival print washer. As you said in those days you could get a deal I purchased my Mamiya C33 with a 65mm lens and the left hand grip for 65 dollars. I totally agree that the more people who get into film photograph the more of a chance we have for more new film and new accessories could be made so I welcome the Tourists, the more the better. Even in the seventies there were serious photographers and casual photographers who bought the best equipment used it for a few months and never picked it up again, I knew people like that. How do you think I got some of my equipment at such bargains. I can tell you that for me the art of photography comes from knowledge and understanding that you get from mastering your technique so it becomes secondary, to the point that you don't think about it so that you can totally concentrate on your subject. You also have to have knowledge of the subject you want to shoot so you can pre-visualize the finish photograph. Sports photographers know the sport so well that the can take amazing photos by having that inept knowledge of the sport they are shooting. What is sad is that film photographers nowadays don't have a place to fully learn film photography like a art or commercial photography school like we did and they have to learn by themselves. It is a shame that RUclips is a place to get information, but some of the channels have bad information and it is based on their personal trial and error. it seems like the videos are made for likes and not for content. People only give positive comments and it is like the blind leading the blind.

Just like the film medium (in my case) helps me slow down, your no-BS, real-deal, straight talk is the lesson I need to hear to stay slow and grounded, and to navigate the content out there that can be toxic in the ways you described.

Don’t like to mention it, haha, but you’re right. At least my RB67 I rescued, because I got it cheap and it broke up few days after I received it. I had to deal with it and learned, how to repair the body to get it to work again. After this I needed some lenses, but they all were tired in the shutter, so I learned to repair this either… It all works like a charm now for month and I love it. It is a nice feeling to manage it and keep it alive by myself… So I can advice everyone to support all this people who keep this analog stuff alive! Stay analog! Cool video Nick, enjoyed again watching it.

Had a friend badgering me for a while with what cheap camera she could get to take good looking pictures with a mood to them, without the need for post processing etc.
After considering the options for a while, I got her to buy an EOS 55 with 28-80 for about $150, made her learn the basics of aperture and shutter speed, she figured out what film look she likes... still can't get over how happy she is with the results. Turns out 3 AF points is all one needs ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Considering the price of a used FF, or even APS-C, digital, there's plenty a film to be shot before she gets even close. And there's no white balance, raw processing, color spaces... to be dealt with, just about $15-20 for developing and scanning the film in a decent lab.

One of your best BGWG's Sir! Watching yours and Ben Horne's channels is why my Minolta XG-M is back out of the dusty old cupboard. Five weeks to shoot 36 exposures! One week to receive them back from lab! One week to scan the best pics and print them at home!.....Absolutely awesome and I love it. When I go out now, instead of using my digital camera faster than an A-10 Gatling Gun, my XG-M is used like a trusty old Springfield 1861.

I got a super great deal on an RZ67 last year. It was basically the camera, a 90mm lens, a 67 film back, weist level + view finder, a handle trigger, a remote trigger and two different macro adaptors for only 500 bucks! I needed to replace the light seals by hand though, but they only cost 12 bucks and it is relatively easy. I could resell the whole "refurbished" set for 3 times the amount I got it.

Another great video. I was able to pick up a 75mm Shift Z lens in Aug 2018. It has the ability to rotate around the center axis of the lens barrel at 5 degrees increments from 0 to 90 giving the ability to have either vertical or horizontal rise ( some diagonal based on the degree of rotation) but can not "tilt" as your SB adaptor does.

As a fan of that sweet, syrupy libation called rum, I can recommend a moderately priced Anejo made by Mount Gay. It's lovingly distilled in Barbados. My father started bringing home bottles of Mount Gay from the Islands all the way back in the late 1960's before it was being imported to the States. I dare say that my family alone has consumed enough Mount Gay to qualify for a Guinness World Record or something similar. Anyway...pick up a bottle for yourself and give it a try in your next Cuba Libre.

This video has been liberating. I’m owning a Rollei TLR cache (even a Wide), a few Bessa II and RF, a complete Baby Linhof (modern) set and many more and although I rotate my cameras I really can’t justify keeping them all. Gotta let some of these cameras go. I never expect to see new film cameras made, at least not the pro types I love and use. I closed down my commercial photography business a couple of years ago so, yes, too much goodness to selfishly hold. I never warmed up to rum and coke but the muddled mint would be interesting. This format has a charm and fireside chat quality that held my attention even when I knew the stuff Nick was explaining. Good, no, great!

You hit the nail on the head.... A camera body is just a case to hold the film and time the shutter. The hard part is the glass. excluding vintage glass, you need someone to manufacture good glass to mate to the bodies that the mom and pops can make. Fujifilm won't go into full frame since they have a focus on the APS-C X series (great camera system) and the GFX medium format systems.
Doing a lot of astrophotography, digital is a better format for me since stacking will return better results than film can achieve. And yes, I was doing this back in the 80s when you waited to see if you had wasted entire rolls of film by having your focus just off. Digital makes star focusing a never fail issue.

  • @bobsykes

Great topics in this one! I’m glad you’re producing this theme again. All the subjects of the video are thought provoking, but your thoughts on the film renaissance really got me thinking. During the year+ of pandemic lock-downs here in CA I discovered and connected with many creators in the You Tube film community. Ironically, they have changed my entire approach to digital photography, more so than inducing me to shoot more film. (Your channel and lesson are among these, obviously). I no longer care about the fastest eye auto focus speed, any of that sort of automation, or having three million pages of menu options on a camera. One really small manual focus digital camera with one lens leaves the house with me every time I head out, and I’ve never enjoyed photography more. (Full disclosure, yes, I still have hung onto three cameras, including one old film camera for when you’ve just gotta shoot some CineStill XX B&W).

The potential benefits of a growing analogue community are exactly as you say Nick. I don't expend any time, concern or energy on 'dilettantes' or 'tourists' though because I have no control over them, what they say or what they do. It'd be redundant effort, so no point in beating your head against that particular brick wall or when they show up in the digital sphere or anywhere else. It's the old Stoic thing of you only having control over what you say, think and do.
Your emphasis on the art and craft of photography is why I subscribe here and the core of my returned love for film imaging - I use digital too where it suits me and against the run of play am entirely happy with my 'ancient' Olympus E-P5 and Canon 5D III but then I also have a Sigma SD Quattro H, which marks me out in the digital community as a real freak ("you use Foveon"?).
Three and a half weeks on from a full right hip replacement (the left was installed last October) I'm almost at a point where I can properly road test the new titanium hardware by taking out my Fuji GW690 with some Ektar and Berger 400.
Odd thing in the wake of surgery though - mobility is improving alongside a burgeoning urge to kill Sarah Connor...

  • @ioio5993
    @ioio5993 2 года назад

I'm an old geezer - 71 now. I like and watch your channel (subscribed) for the composition, the framing and character of the image, timing (morning/evening/shadows, etc.), the chase for the image, coloring, approach, the shoot, etc (and just your general attitude - plus I grew up in SoCal and recognize a lot of the local landmarks). Essentially the general practice of the "Art". My camera is 6 years old - and I may never update it again (Pentax K1 - and everyone hates Pentax - I like your Spotmeter by the way). I only upgraded for better astro star coloring. I don't shoot film anymore, but I still have my old Spotmatic, and I have a few 50-year-old lens that I still shoot with.
I also have a 40-year-old shift lens that I use a fair amount. On my K1, I can shoot the "clock" as I call it. Shoot a frame in the center, and then shift/rotate around to all of the hour positions - 13 frames in total. Why? Well, they all stitch into a single large medium-format-sized image that I can crop in any number of ways (I also like architectural photography too). I can achieve the wide-angle coverage, without the distortion. Plus with Pentax's Composition Adjustment, I can augment the shift lens' shift with some additional sensor-shift when I'm in a very tight physical space - which helps from time to time. I would really love to have a digital sensor that is pano sized - but that's not happening, so I make due with what is available - and think out of the box.

mainstream film photography would be scary if I didn't already have the gear I want/need but honestly I'm hyped for more film production and possibly lower film prices, but if I ever need to replace gear im screwed. I mean imagine if we get some great films back like 400H and possibly Kodachrome??? Not likely but that would be sick. I would also not be mad if we got some new nikon film cameras or somehow a new medium format camera with a Zeiss lens. also a new scanner sounds amazing

Dear Nick, if I remember right the camera makers 30 years ago had wars about shutter speeds, flash speeds, displays on cameras etc. This kind of business model will continue. Not to forget the wars of film makers. So the mainstream gear companies will likely keep trying to attract the mainstream people shooting their children or pets. This is good as i think, because artists grow out of the mainstream. From time to time there is one artist out of the mainstream that will inspire others. This is what i understand of hand over the passion to the next generation. From my point of view the passion for photography is important and not to keep the ashes. By the way... it was a great show and i like the cuba libre as well.

Nick, I’m a retired commercial photographer with 35+ years under my belt. My former clients were on NYNEX, NSDAQ; Fortune 500 corporations (you drive their cars, ride their motorcycles, you eat their food, you eat their confections, you use their banks and you’ve traveled on their jets)…. Quite frankly, who gives a flying f*ck about the drama? You have to rise above that juvenile bullsh*t created and perpetrated by the bottom feeders. Life and career taught me a very important lesson… My vocation was a photographer but a photographer was not who I was or am. First and foremost I was a husband, a father, a son, a grandson, an uncle, etc. Photography was my job but I didn’t allow it to consume my every thought or waking moment. Life is to be lived and enjoyed outside the darkroom. I understand that one must dedicate oneself to their craft but at some point I feel strongly that one must rise above the tawdry nonsense, rise above to the rarified atmosphere where eagles soar. Good luck! Champagne wishes and caviar dreams…

20:13 I totally agree with this! I mean I like when I see people using a film camera and stuff, but I also find more and more people starting doing this for the "wrong" reasons if I can say it like that. Jut because is hip and stuff. It's cool to walk around the streets with your film camera with a custom handmade leather strap on it and taking pictures of old cars. And the prices of cameras and lenses. I saw the other day an old Smena camera, the old russian cameras, selling for some ridiculous price, $100 or something.

I enjoy what you do and your skill with taking images, as for the price you paid for your RZ67 kit a few of us paid just a tad less I had 5 RZ67's one I used for parts for the other 4 because they don't
make them anymore and I enjoy using it. All but one of my RZ's came with a lens or two. Then the 645's super's / Pro TL I pick up a few all work but the odd thing is getting the Mamiya 645 AFD by
mistake and getting the backs for 70.00 each and wondering if that was a good buy.
I've been lucky for the most part and it all started picking up a Brownie from GoodWill and not knowing it was a medium format camera. I just thought it was odd that I couldn't use the 35mm film but
the price was almost the same from my local camera shop and the guy showed me how to load the film. And I was off to the races I still don't know what happened with that camera after I picked up
a Chinon with 50mm which I left in Mexico or the Philippines. Sorry for ranting anyway, love what you do prices are crazy and film is fun.

What a great presentation! All around, every bit of it. Good points on the mainstreamification. Funny that the tilt-shift doesn't actually shift. I guess they figured that the architecture crowd wouldn't be interested in a jogged shot, and landscape folks would only scheimpflug to get deep foreground-background depth and not trickier stuff. Sounds rather like a half-way solution that works all the way only for a segment of the market.

This was a nice talk/analysis. I'm getting back to film at the moment. Digital was not my thing (although I so prefer it for leaning video).
Sure, film costs a lot today. Other than street photography that needs a lot of those hit or miss shots (at least to me) I like the film slowing me down. I've learned most from the shots I decided not to take I think.
Chemicals and home development is still very reasonable in cost. Luckily I kept all my film gear that includes stuff from Leicas to medium format and my lovely 4x5 with all the roll film backs for it as well.

Hi Nick!! A quick suggestion: Go find some Mexican Coca Cola for your Cuba Libre!!
It's made with old fashioned cane sugar and I know it sounds weird, but I can swear I can taste the difference!! Give it a try!!
    :)
I'm looking to try my hand with some Patterson tanks and chemicals to develop my own negatives, I'm REALLY wanting to do this as that they have ECN-2 Kits that will allow the home developer to remove that remjet coating on the real Kodak Vision 3 cinema film (that Cinestile is made from ).....that looks really fun to play with.
I'll start with B&W as that it is simpler and cheaper and a great way to learn the process, but anyway that looks fu.
I wish enough new analog shooters would come along to entice Hasselblad to resurrect the V-System cameras.....that would be cool.
How is the LF class video coming along?
Are you playing with the latest beta version of the new Revini light meter yet? Thoughts?
    Keep up the great work!!
    CC

Now There are two new at least and several guys who provide such service as hobby. Happily I bought lots of stuff before film came in trend again and feel lucky of that. But some cameras were sold those days which makes me sad because nowadays I could earn much more money =)

Back in the 80’s I was a Nikon guy. Had an F2 and a FM2 both with motorized grip. They were built like tanks. The Nikon vs Canon war was already raging then. Had a Leica IIc I inherited from my father. Also a Rolleiflex and… a Minox! Was dying for a Hasselblad or a Mamiya, couldn’t afford one then. Everything was stolen early 90’s. That was the end of it for me. Still have a Steky, though…

Very nice living room. My sense is that the film folks’ flame wars about developers and film is already an issue. I’m not new to film; I’m returning now that I have more time. It’s really hard to sift through the strong opinions to get good advice. For example, I kept reading about Rodinal being gone before finding that there are drop in substitutes.

Since Mamiya has been bought by Phase one, I think the only chance of a new “RZ67” is that Phase one make a film back for their cameras, but it is highly likely to be 645 format. It is going to be something like Hasselblad’s H system; the latest H6X can still use film backs made for H1 and H2. The only big camera manufacturer still is “making” new film camera is Leica with their MP and MA, but they are really expensive.

    • @AtlantaTerry

I believe Nikon still makes a pro 35mm film body. Is it the F6?
If any company might take a risk and bring out a new film camera it would be Fuji. They already have a "medium format" digital camera so a medium format film body would not be too far of a leap of faith for them since their lenses could be used on both their digital and film bodies. Several of my large format lenses are Fujitsu and they are excellent.

    • @yangyang9551
      @yangyang9551 2 года назад

@@AtlantaTerry Nikon just discontinued F6 October last year. Fuji do make excellent lenses. And Hasselblad actually collaborated with Fuji to create the H system. However, I doubt that Fuji would make a a new film medium format camera. The "medium format" digital cameras produced by Fuji have a sensor size of 44 x 33mm which a lot less than 645. I doubt the lens for the GFX system can even cover the image circle of 645. And the whole GFX system is mirrorless. If convert to film bodies, there won't be any space to put a mirror for an optical viewfinder due to the short flange distance. I don't know if Fuji still care about film after discontinue two good film stock(it was a bit unfortunate with Velvia 100).

I have not shot film for years, but I must admit, after cycling through some old photos recently, I kinda am thinking about it as a creative option. There is just something about film that is difficult to duplicate in photoshop. While I have a Nikon F80, I think if I do this, I have to pull out my old Minolta X-GM, including the classic push-pull zoom, to get me into the correct mindset. If it makes sense, I think lack of precision is what I am going for…sort of like shooting old lenses on my modern Nikons.

I bought my Mamiya RZ67 Pro II kit in 2010 with a 110mm lens for $550, the latest AE Prism finder for $125, a focusing screen with microprism in new condition for $60, a 180 mm in new condition for $100 and a 50mm ULD for $400. A few years back, around 2008-2009, you could buy a Hasselblad 500CM kit with a 80mm for some ridiculous prices in local craiglists, as low as $400. Crazy times... But also dark times. Everybody had left film and digital was the only way to go.

Hi Nick; my experience with Canon TS lenses is that they perform extraordinarily when in the 'neutral' position, as they have enough coverage for straight 6x6, and in neutral position, you get superb contrast and sharpness... have you noticed this with the RZ 75 mm tilt/rise ;-) ?
BTW, it could be possible to have someone with a *good* lathe to machine an adapter for your Lee system, by machining an 87mm, or so, out, and threading it to match the 75 mm? K guess i'm assuming that the 75 *is* threaded.
    Alles bestens!

Nick, YES mamiya still exists, Leaf bought them out, then PHASE ONE, aka the XF/XT camera system, but pittifully it is at the $30,000-60,000 price point (Australian dollars); if they only reduced the prices a bit, then the market would be more open to them, like the ~$2,500 price point of dslr's at the moment!!
