There is a debate were they a real group? or a tv show only? according to Mike Nesmith, they were just a tv show. but he didn't mean anything bad by saying that. They started out as a tv show but actually became a band..because they could all sing and had very good voices.. with Peter being the exception . His voice wasn't the best, but he made up for it by playing the intrustments. They were all 4 unique.

Met Davy Jones ...RIP ... at Sherman Oaks park where he was playing softball with friends ...I was 10 years old I think . 60 now .anyone else out there met these guys or have any stories from the old days ?

He wasn't so much originally. Mike Nesmith (who wrote that signature riff to Carole King's tune which she liked so much she incorporated it) was the only pro when the band was formed, and while "the wrecking crew" played many of the parts on the original recording, the boys insisted on learning so they could play the songs themselves so they could perform live like a real rock band. Jimi Hendrix was the opening act for 7 of their concerts, but that's another story.
@@jhandle4196 Micky was playing guitar in a band before he auditioned for the show. He played "Johnny B. Goode" for the producers and then they cast him as a drummer because they "had enough guitarists already." He did learn the drums from scratch, but he could play the guitar very well.

Pat Brennan Are you serious? In 1978 while at University Peter played. The venue might have had 60 people in attendance. Which was capacity . My memory was that he was not very good. Not terrible, but it was clear that he couldn't make any real money in Los Angeles performing. Still I found it interesting. Of course I've since that time seen Monkees reunion crap a couple of times. As much as people may dislike Don Kirshner, it is to me undeniable that it was him who created the success not the four boys.

I guess HE COULD PLAY in real life after all!!! I grew up watching the Monkees and even at 7 tears old I could see that their motions didn't sync or even fit what I was hearing. Apparently Davy even played a bass on camera, Peter played keys but NEVER looked like he was playing...melody nor rhythm. Mickey didn't remotely look like he was playing...a cymbal crash is heard but you don't see it cymbal being hit! Mike looked like he COULD play but his timing/sync was waaayyoff!! The Monkees vehemently denied that they couldn't play for real, nevertheless, they motivated me to play guitar and later keys. I have always been able to sing. I currently play on a Roland FA07 workstation which I love. I lay down all the tracks per instrument,save to memory card and I have a full band at my disposal!! Very fun when you can't get your friends to come over and jam!!! Rest in peace Davy and Peter....your music lives on in us all!!

Im a Believer, Last Train to Clarksville, Pleasant Valley Sunday, all big hits written by the above artists explicitly for the Monkees to sing. Smashmouth redid the song I'm a Believer for the Shrek movie soundtrack. That is by definition a cover. Technically a cover of the Neil Diamond song AND the recording by The Monkees. Carol King plays the song Pleasnt Valley Sunday in concert on occasion. I've never heard Neil do I'm A Believer in concert nor recording...but he may have. Sinatra had many hit songs written for him. He was a great singer, not a songwriter. Bryan Adams and Richard Marx were song writers who later decided to perform their own music...not taking the previously written material for acts like Chicago, Vixen, to re record on their own. That would be a cover conundrum,lol, covering a song you wrote for another band, they made it famous, and now your re recording is now equally as famous! As for the point of did the Monkees play the instruments portrayed in the TV show? No!! There were studio musicians who recorded the actual tracks and played back as tracks for the TV show. The vocals were the Monkees, and the acting. There is no argument there. Until you see them live and unplugged, no cd/ tape for backing, we will never 100% prove if, or or what instrument (s) they played . Nevertheless, I loved the music I heard on the tv show and the corny jokes within the stories. I will refer you to the Wikipedia article which has a bibliography not just the typical people's opinions. It corroborates your statement about the boys playing different instruments than portrayed in the TV show. We fail to appreciate that The Monkees had at least two good musicians in the band; Mike Nesmith and Peter Tork. They may have been a created pop group, but they had some fine song writers writing for them. Pleasant Valley Sunday, a Carol King song, is as good a song to come out of the West Coast as any songs of that era.
When they were finally allowed to take total control over their music as far as writing, arranging, and performing, it resulted in one of their best albums...Headquarters!
I was in grade 3 in 1976 and a fellow student brought in her sisters Monkees album for show and tell. Man I loved that album because that show just made us sooo happy, even in 1976' . Still love them.

Saw Peter live in Massachusetts in the 80s live and knew then the monkeys were for real Peter and I are polar opposite in philosophy but who gives a damn. Carol King plays the song Pleasnt Valley Sunday in concert on occasion. I've never heard Neil do I'm A Believer in concert nor recording...but he may have. Sinatra had many hit songs written for him. He was a great singer, not a songwriter. Bryan Adams and Richard Marx were song writers who later decided to perform their own music...not taking the previously written material for acts like Chicago, Vixen, to re record on their own. That would be a cover conundrum,lol, covering a song you wrote for another band, they made it famous, and now your re recording is now equally as famous! As for the point of did the Monkees play the instruments portrayed in the TV show? No!! There were studio musicians who recorded the actual tracks and played back as tracks for the TV show. The vocals were the Monkees, and the acting. There is no argument there. Until you see them live and unplugged, no cd/ tape for backing, we will never 100% prove if, or or what instrument (s) they played .
Nevertheless, I loved the music I heard on the tv show and the corny jokes within the stories. I will refer you to the Wikipedia article which has a bibliography not just the typical people's opinions. It corroborates your statement about the boys playing different instruments than portrayed in the TV show. We fail to appreciate that The Monkees had at least two good musicians in the band; Mike Nesmith and Peter Tork. They may have been a created pop group, but they had some fine song writers writing for them. Pleasant Valley Sunday, a Carol King song, is as good a song to come out of the West Coast as any songs of that era.

Tork shows himself to be a great performer here. Love the arrangement. This is not an easy song to sing and play- especially with that riff.
Both Peter and Mike had to swallow their pride as musicians while the Monkee show was rolling. Later they got to show their stuff.
When they were finally allowed to take total control over their music as far as writing, arranging, and performing, it resulted in one of their best albums...Headquarters!

I was in grade 3 in 1976 and a fellow student brought in her sisters Monkees album for show and tell. Man I loved that album because that show just made us sooo happy, even in 1976' . Still love them.

He's playing the chords and the riff simultaneously while playing his guitar and accenting the 5th of each progression and singing each notes side by side independently of each other while trying hard not to sustain the rhythm more than necessary. I honestly don't think it could have been played any better. Such a great musician and songwriter he was. Rest in peace my dear friend.
