Lucas is a clinical psychologist based in Porto Alegre, Brazil.
In 2017, in his second year of college, Lucas developed chronic Depersonalization + Derealization after a bad weed experience. Fortunately, he has since fully recovered.
Lucas subsequently wrote his undergraduate thesis about Depersonalization and last year joined a Masters program where his research project is going to be focused on the investigation of psychological processes and their relation to Depersonalization.
As Lucas wrote to me in a recent email:
"At the time my DP started I didn't know your channel yet, nor the manual. But recently I started to watch the recovery stories and was amazed by the common features that are shared, which generated insights for my project. Going forward in my career I'm looking forward to contributing to the development of effective psychological treatments for Depersonalization."
In this brand new interview Lucas tells me all about his experience with and recovery from (and research into!) Depersonalization Disorder.

Hi Shaun, I got your manual and it’s been two weeks since I try to do everything you say in your book. I know in your book you mention do not discuss dp at all, so I stopped all research for dp, my question, can I watch your success stories videos while I’m on recovery or that counts as dp discussion and can’t watch your success story videos .
It’s been 18 months since I fell into this cycle, went all over the world Russia, Germany, Dominican Republic, different states in USA , some professor in Germany told me my symptoms is from hidden hyperopia so I even did surgery on both of my eyes only to find out that wasn’t my problem for my debilitating symptoms. No one mentioned to me about DPDR so I found it myself lately online , went thru lots of bad days this 18 months but now I’m following your program and hope some day will be free from DPDR . I wish everyone who is going thru this speedy recovery and dont give up. God bless everyone

Hey Shaun, your channel has really been helping me over the last few days, but I have a question that I really would love answered as I think the stress related to it is causing my DR to continue. As you've noted, DR is usually caused by a panic attack, bad drug experience, etc, and hits you like a train. My experience though, is a little different. My DR almost faded in over the course of a few months, and I have no idea what caused it. I can't even remember when I first noticed it, but when I went home over the summer from college, I started randomly noticing it here and there. I didn't think much of it as it was very minor and was basically able to forget about it quite easily, but I did recognize it happening every now and again. Once I got back to school though, it started getting worse, and I remember after my first class of the year, it started really bothering me and I looked it up and researched it for the first time, which is when I found out that it was called Derealization. Over the next few days I had all the very anxious thoughts and was convinced I would never recover. That was about 2 weeks ago and while I've calmed down a little bit and know I can recover, the DR still hasn't gone away. I think the one thought that keeps stressing me out is the fact that I had it, although very minor, for almost 3 months, and wasn't really focusing or stressing about it at all, and would more or less forget about it, but isn't this whats supposed to get rid of it? Why didn't it fade away then and eventually come on stronger later, despite the fact that I wasn't even focusing on it? I've obviously had all the scary thoughts of "what if mine is incurable", "what if it's something other than DR", etc. Would you have an explanation for this and why I maybe didn't recover initially and it only got worse? I think it would really temper my worries and help alot. Thank you so much.

    • @Dpmanual
      @Dpmanual  8 месяцев назад +1

Don't worry Ben, the onset of DPDR isn't always sudden, and certainly isn't always caused by something as clear and obvious as a panic attack / bad drug experience 😊
      Read this carefully: www.dpmanual.com/articles/what-causes-depersonalization-disorder/
Remember that it doesn't matter what caused it, how long it’s lasted, or whether it’s been 24/7 or episodic, you can always switch DPDR off completely by stopping the anxiety that's causing it 😊 Read this carefully: www.dpmanual.com/articles/back-to-normal-after-depersonalization/
And if you would like to speak to a medical professional please don't hesitate to do so. I would recommend finding an anxiety specialist if possible as they will likely be more familiar with DPDR.

    • @benluecken2839

@@Dpmanual thanks for your response, though I’m still a little unclear. Why was it persisting despite the fact that I wasn’t even stressing over it and giving it no attention in the beginning, but eventually became stronger? This is what makes me nervous as I know I need to stop being anxious about it in order for it to stop, though I keep thinking back to the time when I WASN’T anxious or really focusing on it at all, though it never fully faded and eventually became worse. Could it have been because I didn’t know what it was at the time? I do have an appointment set up next week with a psychiatrist, so I’m hoping that will help, and maybe lead to some answers.

I’m currently really struggling with the anhedonia aspect of DPDR, and for some reason, some of my autistic special interests feel further than others. One of the biggest ones for me was actually one that I developed/picked up from my last bout of DPDR three years ago. For some reason it seems as though my interests in biology, science, some video games, and a few others do feel like they’re right below the surface, others… just feel gone. Will those interests come back too or are they doomed to fade/go away forever? Because the thought of that is fueling further depression and DPDR. Like this interest has too much sentimental value for me to just… drop it after 3 years of being a huge fan. Am I pushing this interest away? Did I convince myself self it was gone, or perhaps never even real? It shaped my personality so much, how can I just drop it like that? But it feels like it doesn’t fade in the way others do, or maybe I’m just convincing myself of that, I don’t know.

Hey Shawn. I have a question. Does DPDR affect sleep? Yesterday I couldn’t sleep so I fell asleep at 9 am and woke up at 5pm. It’s currently 8:53 AM and I can’t sleep but feel tired a little bit. Should I concern? Also I have discovered that today I got a new symptom called a “half yawn” where your body doesn’t fully complete a yawn. It’s annoying. Hey, thanks for your comment 😊 I know DPDR can be scary but just remember that it’s a natural reaction to stress and anxiety, and people experience it all the time. The National Institute on Mental Illness estimates that up to 75% of people experience at least one depersonalization / derealization episode in their lives. It's part of your brain's natural defence mechanism and usually it only lasts a few seconds or minutes at a time. It's only when it's focused on as a separate problem (feeling like you're going crazy / in a dream etc) that it can turn into a feedback loop with the anxiety that caused it in the first place. But no matter what caused it or how long you've had it, you can always switch it off completely by stopping that anxious feedback loop. Make sure to carefully read through all the articles and info on my website at www.dpmanual.com and my book The Depersonalization Manual.

Can it also make you not feel your sense of sleep this isn’t like an insomnia feeling like I can’t feel sleepiness or tiredness I’m completely disconnected from it from being out of my body and it’s a cycle that never stops

Don’t worry, issues with sleeping and dreaming are very common with DPDR and all anxiety-based conditions. 😊 I know it can be frustrating but they are temporary and harmless and will fade away and stop as your recovery continues: www.dpmanual.com/articles/why-does-depersonalization-affect-sleep-and-dreams/

He's saying his life is different because he's now devoted to helping people with DPDR. But yes, he's fully recovered 😊 www.dpmanual.com/articles/back-to-normal-after-depersonalization/
