The decision they BOTH made, Peter couldn't let her be exiled from the family, I read about it in 'World's Greatest Scandals', including the part where the public loudly supported them both- yet did not support Edward and Wallis. Margaret had been in love with Peter since she was 14 and Peter divorced his wife because she cheated on him.
The actress who played her found out, while researching the role, that for 20 years Margaret was bitter about not being able to marry Peter. She found out from the children of Margaret's close friends. It was several years later that she and Peter saw each other again and that was at a charity event in 1993, people said the whole time they sat on a couch, talking away.
The whole thing was unfair. The Prime Minister Anthony Eden was a divorced man himself at the time. Princess Anne- the Queen's daughter was able to divorce Mark Phillips and marry Tom Laurence. Charles... well, we know what happened with him.

The real historical story is that they were able to change the law, and Margret would only lose her place in the line of succession. Her children wouldnt be in line either.

Loved the song in this video, very appropriate for this. The royal family was still reeling from Edwards abdication to Wallis Simpson, a divorcee, and peter was divorced as well. They wouldn't allow it. Now go ahead 76 years later, and Margaret divorced Tony, after them came Princess Ann, then Charles and Diana, after them Fergie and Andrew, and so and so on. I guess that is why William waited till he was in his 30's to marry his Kate. Harry in his 30's to marry a divorcee. So what goes around comes around. Queen got over it and so did the rest of the Brits. But Margaret was starved of affection.
Alla Bord it was a very different time back then and the Crown was more important than it is today. Furthermore, the law that was put in place that a princess or a prince couldnt marry a commoner was removed in 2010 i think? By the Queen because it doesnt matter in our society anymore. But in the 50s it was great shame to marry a divorcee if you were of a title, especially if you were a princess.
The fault is not all the Queen’s. Princess margaret could have abdicated like the King’s brother did and lost it all to go and live with Townsend. That was an option open to her. But she couldnt deal with the pressure nor the fact that she loved the party life and the scandalous lifestyle hence her attraction to Snowdon. And as a result she paid heavily for that. Townsend clearly truly loved her considering who he married a few years later after he was banished from her.
If this was today, it wouldnt matter but because the class system and divorce was still a prominent factor back in the 50s and 60s, it just couldnt have been done.

She just didn't want to live a "life in a cottage on a Group Captain's salary".
Margaret was obviously getting banged by Peter as those passionate kisses show... She should have just settled to have him as a lover for life in order to keep her Title and Money, I'm sure Peter would have agreed if she paid to keep him like a stud horse in a barn at the Palace.
Her, this actresses ‘portrayal, is virtually unmatched in the Series, and The Crown is as perfect as performance can achieve.
Remember this is Netflix. In real life, Margaret could have married Peter Townsend but only if she had given up all her royal privileges and rank and she wasn’t prepared to do that. At the end of the day, she valued money and royal status above the man. Not judging her. Ultimately, she was in control and made a choice.
It still sad though. She was born to have those privileges, she should of still been able to marry any one she wanted.

Plus understanding the age difference between them and how quickly Peter married a more younger woman, shows that at least from his side it was a mere infatuation towards a young blood which was done while cheating on once wife.

Margaret told her biographer that the main reason she chose privilege over Peter was because their long separation affected their relationship. After two years apart, her love for him wasn't as strong as it used to be. This is true, even if she managed to keep her titles and wealth. I'm sure she regretted the decision but I think for Peter's sake, it's best he didn't marry her if that's how she felt.
I am curious to know if Elizabeth changed her mind on the whole divorce thing , I wonder how things would've turned out for Margaret . She obviously loved Peter and he loved her back and the fact that I guess he was divorced was a bad thing ? if only they made the ok for them . I don't get something. Elizabeth denied the marriage because she's the head of the Church of England, right? Wasn't the CE started by Henry VIII, who did it so he could divorce and marry as he pleased? So why is the CE against letting divorcees marry?

Henry VIII is a bad example and precedent for how the CoE should behave. So no monarch really wanted to duplicate it or come close to him. Since Edward VIII had to abdicate only 20-25 yrs before, Elizabeth II was very careful and the times' mores were strict about this issue. For a monarch or heir to marry someone divorced was verboten. The divorces of Charles and Andrew also softened the view on this as well as the way Margaret's life went. I'm not sure what upset royal courtiers more: that Ms. Markle was divorced, American or biracial. Still, Harry is currently 6th in the line of succession (Charles, William and William's kids precede him) and the fact that he's further from the throne than when Margaret wanted to marry Peter Townsend probably had some influence.
Henry VIII was an absolute monarch; he could do as he pleased without being questioned. It became constitutional monarchy after Queen Anne (early 1700s), and there are certain protocols the crown must now follow

This show is so frustrating sometimes.
There was an agreement made and an amendment of that law where Princess Margaret would be able to marry Townsend without losing her titles or place in the family. The only thing she would lose was her place in the line of succession and her children would not be in the line of succession. With Elizabeth having 2 children, there wasnt any real belief that Margaret would attain the crown.
She would still be Princess Margaret, be able to work for the royal family, and would recieve an allowance like other members of the royal family.
What really stopped her was that she changed her mind, plain and simple. This was not the Queen's fault, and while I disagree with her religious reasons and how they stopped everything, she still made it possible for her sister to marry Townsend. They literally got support to change the law in parliament.
This show is good, but it makes me angry when they try to pass blatant inaccuracies as facts
Because that would get in the war of a good story. The Crown's traditions are evil, story ends there. Saying that Margret chose status over love wouldn't make a good plot.
The real tragedy here is the people who actually believe this fiction as real history rather than do their own research.

Bingo. PT’s ex was still alive so he was considered still married. When Charles married Camilla he was seen as a widower not a divorcee. The Church says/said marriage can only be dissolved by death, not divorce. They don’t recognize the civil/légal of marriage.
I watched this for the first time ever.. last night, I'm still on season one though.. But knowing that they won't end up together is heart breaking. They obviously love and adore each other.. Not really. The Anglican Church modernized quite a lot in the 60s under the influence of Vatican II, just like the Catholic Church. The church rules were quite different from the 70s on so the Queen's children didn't run into a lot of the same stumbling blocks as Margaret did in the 1950s.

It’s not entirely accurate, Margaret was given the choice to marry him in the consequence that she would loose her title and place in the family. She chose not to marry him in order to keep her life and I’m pretty sure Peter backed her decision.

I am a moderate Royalist, but it is right that some things have changed within the institution. A more humane approach to love for example. One can't help but feel a lot of sympathy for Townsend and Margaret especially with the false hope they were given.

This is not the "Woe is me" story that Margaret and the history books made it out to be. Margaret was told that she could marry Peter, but only if she gave up all of her royal priviledges and her place in the succession line. Countless divorces occur due to financial reasons regardless of the amount of love in a marriage. Ask yourself if YOU could abandon your family and your friends and your identity, never to see them again for the sake of one person. It's a huge risk to take. It's easy to say they would've been so much better off, but I doubt it

Peter was a divorced man and it was quite frowned upon to be such. Queen Elizabeth was in support of it as it was her sister and of course you'd like to have your family members happy. But at the same time, the crown had to win, as Queen Mary's letter stated to the Queen in this series and with the Duke of Windsor's abdication still fresh in the minds of everyone in England, along with the Queen Mother's anger towards him for hastening her husband's death (King Geroge VI) because of much pressure of the crown, the Queen had to have her feelings put aside for the sake of the country, as Princess Margaret was next in line for the crown, had anything happened to The Queen and her son, Prince Charles.

Of course Princess Margaret, the Queen & Prince Philip had their failings as parents, etc, and Prince Philip could be tactless. Whatever mistakes the royal family have made, let us be grateful for the service they give, and for the difference the monarchy makes for the better, in the world. There will always be violence in the world, and billions of people who know or understand nothing of the British monarchy. The value of the British crown since the 1700s is, many billions of people have lived under it without civil war, lynching, dictatorship in their lives.
I don’t find the romance of Margaret and Townsend at all touching. In the show it’s certainly portrayed like she was pursuing him when he was still married. The reunion scene between them was very awkwardly filmed, not at all romantic or erotic for that matter. To see an intense emotional love scene of star-crossed lovers watch Harrison Ford and Kelly McGillis in Witness. Now that was well done.
Why is no one blaming Peter tho. He was not a responsible man. He was a royal staff. He had no morals and definitely didn’t took his job seriously. He destroyed her. I am so upset with him. he wasn’t suppose to let the relationship happen in the first place.. he knew what will happen all along and he allowed it, he even enjoyed it the media attention.
