The Buddha was an Explorer of the mind to find liberation from suffering which benefited all of mankind. He didn't leave his family for some egoistic adrenaline kick nor did he leave his family to fight wars and kill people, though defending one's family and country might be an honorable thing to do.
Your worst enemy cannot harm you as much as your own thoughts, unguarded. But once mastered no one can help you as much, not even your own father or mother. Buddha
