Love your quick impressionistic style. Less means more! Realism painting explains the work to the viewer but impressionism allows the viewer to interpret and become immersed in the viewing experience more intimately!
Your videos are priceless! You explain AND show how to implement brushstrokes. Many teachers simply do not explain brushstrokes. I wish I had found your videos years ago!
Thank you Malcolm. During this difficult period for many of us, it helps to have something you enjoy, like art! We have just moved to a small village and so needed someone to assist me with my oil painting, a teacher! So pleased I have subscribed to your page. Hope I will become more confident soon. Your tip on brush strokes was an AhHa moment! Regards Pam
Great video, I love how you get those clean colours, and I love how your pictures look so bright and realistic from a distance, then disappear up close into an abstract collection of colour, it's like magic.
@@MalcolmDewey you're welcome, I always look forward to your videos. Particularly at times like this, it's great to have content like this suddenly pop up and inspire me to get the paints out 😁
A very valuable demonstration Malcolm. Thanks for sharing on your channel. I must admit sometimes, I do tend to hold the brush too firmly and end up (when I paint a wet layer over one underneath), lifting off too much paint that is already there. Your video provides a much better way of applying it.
Thanks so much for giving us all this information for free. I paint differently to you but love how your paintings sparkles. Best wishes to you in these horrible times.
I enjoyed this video,i'm not a professional artist by no means, you helped me a lot.I do abstracts in art journals and on canvas boards.Thank you sir for sharing this awesome video.👍👍👍👍👍👍👍🏆❤
Thank you Malcolm...can you do one on acrylic brushwork please? I have used the #4 & 8 Cryla brushes you recommend and find they have the best "spring" - wonderful to work with but I struggle with the large sizes. Also, in your videos you always seem to have masses of paint to dip into - do you mix more as you go? I never have enough to apply as a thick stroke when I follow the videos and I don't seem to have the knack of remixing a good match each time. I do wonder also if there is a a particular way to pick up the thick paint and lay it on.
Thank you for another super informative video! Just curious if you would at any stage in a painting, use a brush specifically for the purpose of adjusting brushstrokes after the paint has been placed, or if you would rather add more layers to cover over a stroke you might not want to leave as is? If you wanted to smooth out the brushstrokes in a sky, or change the pattern of marks in a grassy foreground, for instance. I have heard that its not ever a good idea to use a dry brush into wet paint with oils, but if you'd care to share your take on this I'd be interested to know.
Thanks Cara. No I never use a dry brush. If the painting is wet it is easier to correct , but I will use fresh paint to do so. If the painting is dry it is tricky to get the color and strokes right. It can lead to more work than intended 😊
Thanks for the video! Is there a brush or technique to use if Im painting on a sand-based surface (I've structured my canvas) and don´t want any brush strokes at all?
Hi Malcolm-- Thank you for sharing your knowledge! For awhile I have been curious about that retail display of paint tubes behind you--- Is that your own studio? Or are you in a store?
Hi Malcolm, I purchased an oil painting, however when I got home I noticed a brush hair in the centre of the picture, when I returned the picture I was told that it is common for an artist to leave a brush hair on the picture. Would this be normal. I paid 500.00 euro for the picture.
It happens, but I would not say its normal. Its unfortunate the artist did not remove it. Does it really detract from the painting's value or enjoyment? Not really. It depends on the painting, visibility of the brush hair etc. If it is not intrusive its not a big deal. Ultimately its up to you. Some would find it appealing as part of the artist's painting process.
@@MalcolmDewey Thanks Malcolm for taking the time to reply, the lady in the studio pulled the brush hair off, close up it was very obvious, I was really surprised/ disappointed that the artist didn't remove it. However it will be sent back to the artist to fix. Thanks again and greeting from Ireland.
!!!!!!! Yes there are many Russian contemporary impressionists that do amazing work. I think impressionism and impasto techniques are a strong characteristic of Russian painting today.

Lose deathgrip, got it. Now to apply this brushstroke technique to the rest of my life problems.
Learning a lot from you Malcolm, thanks! Which brush did you use at 6:55? Thx
Its a no. 4 long flat. Worn down a bit 😄

A painting knife pethaps
What are your favorite brushes for acrylic? Do you do the brushstrokes the same as for oil?
I like Dealer Rowneys Cryla range. Yes I do try a similar approach. Lots of paint and layers as acrylic tends to flatten out as it dries.
Hi Malcolm-- Thank you for sharing your knowledge! For awhile I have been curious about that retail display of paint tubes behind you--- Is that your own studio? Or are you in a store?
Its my studio - it is simply a convenient way to store paint tubes 😊
