Those hard won lessons are the one that acid etch into your mind. Sometime harsh life experiences are the only way to learn. I'm in my fifties too 54 what's left is not the bestn years. To waste your best years 20-35 is a shame

That almost made me tear up because I know from experience when people sigh like that, they are deep in thought about their entire life, up bringing and all. I catch myself doing that every so often as well.

Yo....Herc and Badger.... just wanna say, love the vids. If I could make one small suggestion, not necessarily for this video in particular, but sometimes when I watch these with my dudes, I gotta pause every couple seconds to explain some of the lingo/ slang. Especially since the purpose of these stories are to deter people from ending up on the inside, it might be helpful to use terminology that people who haven't experienced that life will understand. Im not saying don't use the terms, cause God forbid someone actually ends up doing prison time, but maybe use the terms and then say what they mean. I also think it will help those who have been to jail, but not had to encounter certain things that they would doing time. Like I said, LOVE the content, and this is just a suggestion. Remember he's been inside without sunlight for most of his life so not much exposure to harsh elements that age your skin. Only wig splitting and cheek busting!
3 meals a day, regular regimented routine, limited sun exposure, that will keep you younger than life outside.

Prison living is very healthy. Or,it used to be. When I first went to adult prison we worked our ass off 10 hours a day. 3 meals,early to bed early to rise,no drugs,alcohol or women. In Texas it was still the farm system and living on a farm is healthy. Man,I'd pick cotton all day,come in do a thousand pushups in sets of a hundred and then g.i. my cell. Every time I got out I was in fantastic shape. For a while.

I appreciate all of you guys opening up about your experiences on the inside. My brother never got the chance to heal after a lifetime of being institutionalized and unfortunately he took his own life. He never confronted his demons either, which is why he kept going in and out of those places both federal and state. I love to see you doing well and helping others with the transition. Stay strong and keep fighting the good fight.
I never thought I was a tough guy until I started listening to gangster rap and doing drugs. Then I found out I was just a wannabe. If you aren't built like that, don't try to be.

Fair play to you my friend. I’m from the UK. My Dad was the first soccer hooligan to get a prison sentence in the Country. I grew up in a rough neighbourhood, with drugs and crime around daily. Nearly all my Dads friends were criminals but they were good people in many ways and I have had friends that made bad life choices and ended up in prison.
I took drugs etc but I never got involved in serious crime myself. I worked my way up from the bottom to management in hotels.
I understand how easy it was and is to succumb to a life of crime.
I don’t look down on anyone that made mistakes in life. I do respect anyone that chose that life and has turned their life around because I know that’s difficult. Life can turn into a vicious circle. In prison then no one wants to employ you and you turn to crime again and end up in prison again. I have employed former criminals in my hotel. How can someone reform if they’re not given a chance?
Good luck you guys, I love hearing your stories. Hopefully this will stop young kids today making the same mistakes.

Never spent a minute in jail. I enjoy listening to these gentlemen, human nature is very interesting. It's like I always say. Steady up listen and take your time...love the show guys.
I often realize that our species is not that far removed from chimpanzees in some cases after hearing these prison stories. If you know how violent and murderously tribal Chimpanzees are (they actually hunt down, kill off and eat chimps who are not part of their troop as they patrol their home range) by nature then it won't surprise you that we have similar violent tendencies. The saving grace for us though is that we can actually exercise enough free will to turn the course that our nature would set us on and once the dopamine high goes away and we realize just how fucked things are and how much better it would be to go the other way.

Prisons in places like Sweden are like a hotel. It's nothing, meanwhile in the US- don't drop the soap.
But yet in some ways not bad enough. I've been in LE for 20+ years, and I'll admit that there are people in prison who never should have been, and made worse than when they went in after being inside. Guys in for drug possession or theft, coupled with being too damn poor and stupid to realize how the system works to stay out of prison in the aftermath of being caught often fall into this category. Bottom line, prison is a criminal factory almost as sure as abusive or negligent parents are. At the same time, some of the subhuman shit that are in there for really heinous crimes, particularly those of a psycho-sexual nature, cannot be fixed or rehabilitated, and furthermore, for the ripple effect of their crimes, deserve no measure of mercy. For example,we had a case where a father and two sons abducted an 11 year old girl, raped her for three days, then sealed her alive in a metal barrel to cook in the sun until she died. All for revenge over a drug debt her parents owed. Obviously justice isn't on the table in this country anymore, so they got life in prison, and live quite comfortably in PC, where they get to attend classes, sing in a choir, and all that feel good stuff. Does that seem right to you? They should have been sent straight away to meet Jesus since they were looking for him so hard.

My best advice for finding the meaning of life: Go out into the forest. Alone, or with people. Just go out and experience nature. People forget where they came from. We all came from the wild, and wild we shall remain.

American prisons seem nasty and brutal. Herc and yourself were tough - that's why you guys survived. The majority are not and jail life eats them alive.
Lesson 1: don't do the crime or you'll do the a lot of torturous time.
Lesson 2: Don't be a fool stay in school
Lesson 3: listen to Badger and Herc and avoid years of cheek busting and wig splitting in the pen.
Irish Constitution saddest thing is theyre not even that bad compared to some countries like south africa and brazil. I feel so bad for yanks in a first world country that end up in this shit, people who do petty shit like theft should not be in the same place as a serial murdering thug. Granted a criminal is a criminal but not all of them are as bad as each other. Glad we have Herc and friends to help keep young people across the globe from glamourising bad behaviour.

I think one of the biggest points that they keep hammering home is that it isn't about being "tough". Doesn't matter how tough you are, getting stabbed is getting stabbed. Wes Watson calls it "the lottery", there's no small element of luck involved when it comes to surviving. You hear their stories, people getting killed over petty shit, and sometimes for literally nothing (when a shot caller puts out a hit based on bad info). Obviously these guys are "tough" but I think that's the wrong take away from their message. It seems to me what they're trying to say is that it doesn't matter how "tough" you are, nobody's untouchable, and anybody can get their wig split. If anything I think they are telling us to drop the "tough" guy shit, and stop thinking you're "tough" in the first place. Just my two cents.

If you don't mind, could I please ask one question: In the situation you just explained, when you were transferred to "SP3"; I don't understand, why was there a 13 second beating? If I understand what you said correctly, the same people - who introductions were make to, at the beginning of the transfer - went from cell-to-cell beating those inside for 13 seconds? He said there was a 13 second beating to make sure you were a gang member and not an informant or a rat. He said the ones who would scream during the beating they knew was a fake gang member. Remember he was in an area strictly for gangsters and killers.
