  • It's mid-October, and I just started giving the cows a bit of hay for the winter season. These cows are mostly half Angus and half Scottish Highland which is a good combination for our mountain climate. We had a good year for the pastures this year, so the cows haven't had anything but grass and trace mineral/salt blocks since spring. There is still some grass growing, but not enough for them to get by on at this point.

Hi Jim...have you ever heard of using a Scottish Highland cow or a Highland Angus crossbred cow as a "house" cow - in other words a dual purpose beef and family milk cow. Red poll cattle and Shorthorn come to mind as examples of what I am asking. Really enjoy your videos! Keep up the great work.

I went out to look at some Highland and Dexter cattle several years ago, and the guy who had them milked some of the Highlands by hand.

@@JimODonnellFarm Ok Thanks. I have read and heard that highlands do make a great family milk cow. Thanks.

When do you stop feeding them hay?
