- A great song by Dispatch.
Lyrics:
there was a decorated general with
a heart of gold, that likened him to
all the stories he told
of past battles, won and lost, and
legends of old a seasoned veteran in
his own time
on the battlefield, he gained
respectful fame with many medals
of bravery and stripes to his name
he grew a beard as soon as he could
to cover the scars on his face
and always urged his men on
but on the eve of a great battle
with the infantry in dream
the old general tossed in his sleep
And wrestled with its meaning
he awoke from the night
to tell what he had seen
and walked slowly out of his tent
all the men held tall with their
chests in the air, with the courage in
their blood and a fire in their stare
it was a gray morning and they all
wondered how they would fare
till the old general told them to go home
He said:
I have seen the others
and I have discovered
that this fight is not worth fighting
I have seen their mothers
and I will no other
to follow me where I'm going
So,take a shower, shine your shoes
you got no time to lose
you are young men you must be living
Take a shower, shine your shoes
you got no time to lose
you are young men you must be living
go now you are forgiven
but the men stood fast with their
guns on their shoulders not knowing
what to do with the contradicting orders
the general said he would do his own
duty but would extend it no further
the men could go as they pleased
not a man moved, their eyes gazed
straight ahead till one by one they
stepped back and not a word was said
and the old general was left with his
own words echoing in his head
he then prepared to fight
He said:
I have seen the others
and I have discovered
that this fight is not worth fighting
I have seen their mothers
and I will no other
to follow me where I'm going
So,take a shower, shine your shoes
you got no time to lose
you are young men you must be living
Take a shower, shine your shoes
you got no time to lose
you are young men you must be living
go now you are forgiven
go now you are forgiven
go now you are forgiven
go now you are forgiven,
go!
go now you are forgiven
go now you are forgiven
go now you are forgiven,
go!
go now you are forgiven
go now you are forgiven
go now you got to be got to be got to be hey

Song about loyalty
Cousin played it in the car as we headed back from a family airsoft battle :) Good times
Love it
I like these types of songs
This takes me back to 2004-2005. I was a freshman in highschool. The older kids would play this….such pure nostalgia. Takes me back to band camp (haha yes band camp, and I did play the flute) and how much fun I had.
Same! I was a freshman in 2002-2003 and in the band. The upper classmen played this all the time
I heard some hippie kid singing this at a truckstop in kansas last week. he was pretty good. its been stuck in my head since then.
I feel like I’m back in college (circa 2001) sitting around a fire pit passing around a joint with my friends.
04, but yea same story 🤣😂
05 but same!
100%
9/11
I'm a 66 years old veteran and served 10 years in the Marines, I was teaching in Juvenile Halls when I heard this song first during free time for my students: I teared up and nearly broke down crying in front of the delinquents...
Thanks for being there for us. Ex alternative ed kid, we need strong men with emotions in our life. Most of us dont have one.
30 years old and i think i turned out right.
And trust me, i know how much you hate to hear this, but thank you for your service.
It’s not about the strength to hold it in, it is the strength to recognize when you need to cry that matters. You’ve seen more than I ever will and when you feel the need to show the emotions, you earned every tear, sir.
We are inherently broken in some way. Stay strong brother
I hear this song at camp and I loved it. I feel like everyone heard it at camp too.
What camp?
I heard it from some hippies at college
This song brings me straight back to college every damn time. Such nostalgia.
I remember this. A brave girl showed me this song a long time ago.
What happened to her ?
She alive? I hope
Massive shoutout to my man Hitch, great track for real.
I can't explain how much I relate to the general. I wish I had a leader like this in my life when I was a young man.
I can't even sing the first chorus cuz I always start to tear up.
Me too, everytime
I'm there too. I may have depression(don't know yet), and just got done listening to Bones in the Ocean. I already had a crying playlist, and thought why not? So, I'm here now.
same haha, my name is jeff, aswell
Who else listens to this song and sings their heart out to it once or twice every year or two
It's a ritual
heard this song at young life camp! loved it!
surprised you don't have more views.. this is one of the best quality audios with lyrics, thank you and I hope you get more views!!
Nice video. I liked how you had more words on the screen so there weren't constant transitions. Sound quality was good too. All in all it was pretty good.
Camp Takatoka staff member 2018 and 2019. We play this song during every last night campfire. It's a favorite of the campers and staff.
Every time my dad takes me to go hunting we only get one radio station hours away from home up some mountain and I always fall asleep to this song.
wow this is unexpectedly good.
I truly believe that the presentation deserves the accolades it is receiving. However if you have the patience to watch either of the of the two songs I’ve suggested below (each song is 7 minutes long and sung like a ballad from an earlier generation) you will be well-rewarded. One of the songs is “Christmas in the Trenches” played by John McCutchen (and several others on RUclips); and the other is “And the Band Played Waltzing Mathilda” by Priscilla Herdman and several others. I like Priscilla’s voice even though the song (I believe) was meant to be sung by a man. The lyrics to both songs left me literally in tears; much more so than the lyrics of the “General”. To me, these two songs are particularly meaningful to me and I view them as very effective anti-war songs.
my brother worked at a camp called camp rainy mount he showed this to me when he came home have a nice dayeveryone
I love this song makes me think of my pop
I heard this in my 5th grade social studies class, Im going to college now and its been stuck in my head all week😂
the best band, miss good music!!!
Lol I just spent over 20 mins searching for “jam band song about dirty or bare feet” with this song in mind, (initially searching/thinking it was by phish?!) but not being able to remember any lyrics or the band it was by (can you tell I’ve had quite a few trips with Lucy in the sky? 😂) and somewhere in the deep recess’ of my brain “dispatch” finally popped up and the lyrics aren’t even about about dirty or bare feet but taking a shower and shining your shoes hahah I’m glad it did though bc 1. This is a great song and 2. I love the nostalgia to my old touring days! I enjoy a few older songs by dispatch or phish and the like, but GDF for life ❤️⚡️💙
Glad you found your jam! Would have loved to tour with you!
Thanks for putting up the Lyrics for us BTM, I have also seen the others, met there mothers and their children, it was worth it , but NOT WORTH REPEATING>
What?
I LOVE THIS SONG
My cabin leader put this song on every morning when i went to a camp
its a good song, so I wouldn't mind being woke up to this
+Bennett Green ya it is
Kyler Kelly same
Belknap?
Barry Hanz yep at camp belknap
Camp Eagle Ridge, god I miss it.
Same my dude
I second what Skolirodeloi claims. Nice job
Dang. Just realized that this song was about Robert E. Lee ordering the surrender of the Army of Northern Virginia. Had plenty of ancestors who probably heard these words that day
Very much doubt this song is about Lee. The line "take a shower" sort of disqualifies this being about Lee as showers weren't a part of American culture until the 1920s at the earliest.
This song was used in the original payback
I Hurd this song on a app some kind of off brand gta games 😭 some were back in 2007
Ya, that game is called Payback and that's the exact reason why I'm here too 😂. The "take a shower, shine your shoes, you got no time to lose" line has been stuck in my head on random occasions ever since then... lmao
So much great memories
This song is so beautiful. Almost gave me chills :P
“I have seen the others
and I have discovered
that this fight is not worth fighting...
...you must be living,
go now you are forgiven”
Hey cool we watched the same video
MoonPie : I was just writing the lyrics that really meant something to me...
I used to sing this to my daughter every night when she was in the womb. I love you Luna Skye
Love how they added the bongos at the end at 3:40
there was a gta like game with is song in it.. anyone knows the name of it
Truthgamings dude was it on a phone😭
I call this song rock back and forth
The height of dispatch... + some other stuff
My teacher played this song in world history. I loved it
Same
Same
If you think about it without lyrics the hole mood changes
Wtf does that even mean
@@SpiritofPoison it's a happy song with darker lyrics
Now im thinking, what will happen if a general ask his soldiers to desert their army? would these soldiers be punished?
1.2.3.4.5.6a no. it is an unlawful order and by law, if a superior gives an unlawful order you have to verify, try to appeal or retract the order and then disobey if an unlawful order stands.
Yes they would be punished. It's TRUE you aren't suppose to follow unlawful orders but if you do you will also be punished.
I think yall miss understand the song. The song is about General Lee telling his men that the Northern Virginia army is surrendering. In this case it is not an unlawful order
You’re thinking too hard...
In this case the war is ending so he doesn’t want them killed as it’s ending.
So, take a shower, shine your shoes
you got no time to lose
you are young men you must be living
Take a shower, shine your shoes
you got no time to lose
you are young men you must be living
go now you are forgiven

The General "Knew there Mothers" indeed, he fathered children with them, and realizing that his children were fighting each other, as 'The Father of both sides', he dismissed the troops, as he did on the other side as well. Thank you General, you are as the Christ on the cross, who goes into Hell to minister to the souls found there, and you wish us not to follow you, knowing someday, one will choose to dare disobey, this one being called in the Christian Nomenclature as ... 'the Antichrist'. Thanks you for the Dispatch Boys.
I will no OTHER to follow me where Im going? OTHER? More like ORDER.
I have seen the others and i have discoverd that this fight is not worth fighting. And iv seen there mothers and i will no other to follow me where I'm going. So take a shower, shine your shoes you got no time to lose, you at young men you must be living.Take a shower, shine your shoes you got no time to lose,go now you are forgiven. But the men stood fast with their guns on their shoulders, not knowing what to do with the contradicting orders.
People crawling on me like maggots over this song
ok so i listened to the song and here's what I caught. A general feels bad about how he has killed so many and fought in so many wars so he tells his men to not fight so they would not feel like he feels and after a moment they do he then fights an army only to be killed in battle. I don't know bad summery but is it correct its what I got from listening.
unchained I think it's about seeing their rivals and their own army just as human beings with hopes, a promising future and families waiting for them. It's about putting humanism over political or economic interests
I suppose that that is the best way to look at it. At least to me.
unchained Dude, that's right because it's what you got from the song.
TheBlarfingChannel I believe it is about General Lee before he surrendered at Appomattox
Dawson Innis That's what we can gather about Dispatch's view of the song, since they wrote it, but it's still a song and you can gather your own thoughts on it.

This reminds me of hotline miami 2 am i the only one?
Furry beta yes
I used'ta could keep a dry eye over this song about Afghanistan and Iraq in the day. Now I cannot, even just in general (pun intended), but Ukraine doesn't help a bit either 🤷♂️
Cheese time
Warriors code song belongs at brigs
Really a catchy tune. Nice work. Too bad that is not the way war works. I 100% understand though.
When you realize their punishment would be court martial and execution by firing squad 😐
Thats why he says “go now you are forgiven” as they aren't considered fleeing from battle but rather dismissed by their general, so they wouldnt face punishment
Camp coleman
'Take a shower shine your shoes' sounds like 'take a shower chuckie cheese'
+Emo GirlKitteh not at all
Emo GirlKitteh lolololol when I sing it sometimes I accidentally say "shine your shower, take your shoes."
Dorothy Flint 4H camp anyone?
