Blowback: Iran, the Ayatollahs, and the CIA

  • The historical reality is that Iran had a secular, democratic government, led by Prime Minister Mohammad Mossadegh between 1951 and 1953 - but Mossadegh was removed from power in a coup organized and funded by the CIA and Britain’s Secret Intelligence Service, also known as MI6.
With a handful of exceptions, most mainstream U.S. politicians have little to say about any of this sordid history. In Washington, D.C., Iranian hostility toward the U.S. has long been treated as inexplicable and irrational, while the CIA’s role in the 1953 coup - which set off a chain of events that resulted in the rise of Iran’s ayatollahs and the Islamic Revolution of 1979 - has vanished into a memory hole.
Hosted by Mehdi Hasan ( / mehdirhasan , "Iran, the Ayatollahs, and the CIA" is the third episode of a six-part Blowback series for The Intercept. Mehdi Hasan will examine key examples of blowback in greater detail and explore how foreign policy decisions by the U.S. and its allies often produce blowback and so-called unintended consequences.

Some. You make me laugh. Huge involvement😂 I like the way Obama says, we helped force out a democratically elected regime. Now democratically elected part seems to fit. How was it a regime. Being so popular, and democratically elected by the people? With no oppression. Can they even appear in the same sentence like that? 😵

To both of you, how do you explain ISIS, Al Qaeda, the Taliban and the Wahhabi fundamentalists supporting and being involved in terrorism? _ALL_ religions have 'holy' wars where they kill people to 'save' them, what kind of f***d up logic is that except for having people who believe/submit and suspend morality to defend or promote their 'faith'? I know quite a few Muslims and many Christians who suspend their religious beliefs in order to live a moral life because to live by their religions morality would make them immoral by any humanistic understanding of morality.

And you will come to know that the highest level of ethics and morality is in Islam.

even though it's a retelling but, obviously, not a documentary: the 'storyboard-style' opening sequence of the film, *"Argo,"* explains well, the socio-political climate of the ousting of the democratically elected Iranian president..it actually does a very good job of explaining to/teaching movie-watchers what really happened..and, dare i say, in an entertaining but also in an effective way..the film, too, in its storytelling (again, considering it wasn't a documentary), it was very well done..and it was an esp., good history lessons for us Americans.. because we got told all kinds of things about it as kids and young adults - nearly all of which was wrong..just sayin' because never were we taught most of the truth. 🤓

Let's not forget that the first cia coup in 53, when democracy was thwarted, came right after the start of Israel 1948. One reason they wanted control of the oil, for the upcoming Arab oil embargo. Although the Shah was a monarch with a secret police, it got more brutal after the revolution, in terms of freedom, and the police not even secret. Lots of executions and mandatory headscarf for women. Some say from the frying pan to the fire. Also it was interesting how the television cameras drew in the crowd, and by looking at the cover of Le Monde, it seemed that the revolution had already occurred before it happened. Some say the Shah wanted to go more independent, and perhaps a new enemy was needed besides communism, especially for the benefit of Israel, who invaded southern Lebanon in early 80's. At first the Muslim fighters were being funded, but once the Soviet union fell apart, they became the new enemy. As long as weapons could be sold (weapons sold to both Iran and Iraq during war), perpetual wars, and Israel is safe

Let me get this straight. Iran agreed to and signed legal contracts to allow the UK to drill for oil and for 50 years the UK invested millions of pounds building up the infrastructure, paying all of the necessary taxes and fees annually to the Iranian government, while employing more Iranians than British. The UK never cheated on the deal, never shielded profits or skimmed on paying Iranian taxes. Then along comes Mossadegh who, now that the infrastructure was in place, not only broke the legal contracts, literally stole through confiscation millions of pounds in UK property, and expelled the oil company without remuneration. How is that not theft? For kicks and giggles, let's imagine the "blowback" if, say, Donald Trump were to expel the most successful Chinese or Saudi companies in the US, confiscating hundreds of millions of dollars worth of their infrastructure/property, and not pay a single cent in remuneration all in the name of nationalism/populism. The world--most of whom already see him a dictator--would be up in arms. Yet, Mossadegh was just a democratically elected leader, looking out for the interests of his people?? It may be worth noting that while he was arrested by the CIA, he was tried, convicted, and sentenced by independent Iranian courts.

These so-called "leaders" all have a time span! The Shah was placed in power by the CIA and the hardliner nationalist Mossadegh, whose intention was to nationalize the Iranian oil, was placed in prison!
So long as the Shah did as he was told, he continued to "rule"!
Once the Shah started criticizing the West, it was time to bring along another traitor called Khomeini!
These mullahs are wholly obedient to their CIA bosses! Of course, all obedience takes place behind closed doors!
In public, the mullahs condemn the West for everything!
In private, the mullahs do EXACTLY as instructed!!!
The Shah was against having a war with Iraq!!!
Khomeini was placed in power, and within a year or two, the 9-year-long war with Iraq began!!!!
As regarding the Hamas' horrendous attack on Israel last week, you need to ask yourself: How could the Israeli Secret Service not know about it? My gut feeling tells me that Israel itself is heavily involved in the horrendous attack against its own civilians!!! Just like the ploy called "weapons of mass destruction", which was used by the US to attack Iraq. Similarly, the tragedy of the Twin Towers was an inside job!!!!

As a very big fan of Persian culture,I wish every American could have this analysis tatooed inside their skull for every time Iranian - US relations come up in the news. When Obama was "trading pallets of money for hostages',as some Right-wing commentators refer to it,that was IRANIAN money that the US had frozen in 1979. Barack Obama was setting us on the path for normalization of relations, which would've been good for Iran, the US and the world. Thanks to Trump,so much for that.

Mossadeq never got the chance to govern the country ,as the Shah's pride , narcissistic mentality , selfishness and mastermind attitude ,could not put up with a patriot such as him.

When Khomeini landed in Tehran he was asked what he'd do with
the democrats in the Shah's parliament, he said, "I'll kick their teeth in ".
Ayatollah Khomeini executed 7000 in his first year,
more than the Shah had killed in his entire life.
Prisoners in the Shah's prisons spoke of tedium and boredom
in the Ayatollah's prisons they described torture terror and death.
The Islamofascists introduced a nightmare to Iran.
