  • Tony Bingham, a sincere friend, found our location for this video at the last minute - and we were of course elated. But on the shooting day in question, the skies produced rain clouds for miles.
I sat silently, thinking how I'd finally gotten to shoot a music video for this band (I had already directed their EPK and documentary), and now the heavens were not cooperating. Clearly a disaster was abound. I decided to shoot anyway. Maybe two takes in, I'd pretty much given up on the clip having any signature look...everything was drab, muddy and dark.
But within, it seemed, seconds, a wondrous thing happened. I received a call from my steadicam operator who said prior his schedule would not allow for him to be there - now he was asking for directions. My smile began. Once he arrived, the cloud cover peeled back. We had a stretch of about 3 hours of moist sunlight! Outstanding!
After a bit of fertile photography, we packed up and left the farm location, stumbling accidently on a small shack in the middle of nowhere. Funny, when I entered the rickety structure, a visible hole stood out in the middle of the place. I thought out loud, "Quick, let's place the camera down there, and spin it in a circle to catch each band member in a different part of this open house. Worked like a charm!
And when I suggested Speech sit in the window, the sun grew brighter for our two only takes. God...is all one can say.
We traveled back to downtown ATL, where I was favored with the distinct honor of working with famed artist, Radcliffe Bailey. A polished professional. He braved rush hour traffic, and seedy alleyways for us to capture what was pure about his work even then.
We ended our spirited day at the Scoville Hotel, where we finalized our efforts for the remainder of the concept.

The music industry did promote it. It received awards and other accolades. However, it was not as well received among the public, where some decried it as inauthentic or performative, minstrel like.

@@calicokush it got to number 6 on the Billboard singles chart from an unknown black band that got zero airplay on black stations and wasn’t picked by pop radio until the MTV audiences started requesting it. Phil Collins “Another Day In Paradise” is the same exact theme and came out 2 years prior. Sales went straight to number 1 on the backs of radio and MTV promo. What’s different? The early 90s were a strange time for wholesome rap as the industry began to push gangster hiphop. PM Dawn, Djane, Queen Latiffah, all were tossed in the bin.

Love this song. I'm a 46 year-old homeless man living in the Pennsylvania woods. I truly believe that their are far more good people than bad on this planet. This comes from someone that has had to fly a cardboard sign for a while now to survive. For every idiot that yells rude comments at me their is a hundred people that have helped me out. Never look down on someone unless your helping them up. God bless.

The Homeless were just like us when life unexpectedly took a turn and altered their life. Unable to get back on their feet after losing their job as they lost support with loved ones. We see them everyday passing them down and not realizing that one day we might end up like one of them. Show some kindness to them because they are still human after all.

I understand that many people feel that Arrested Development was very focused on afro centric ideals, but I must say that they have a lot of universal messages in their music. I for one can relate to a lot of the music and being born a white middle class male from the other side of the country, that is saying a lot. When you actually pull apart some of their lyrics I'm surprised at how timeless and insightful they truly are. Not to mention they hardly ever curse and although they recognize the african american struggle they do not advocate the gangster lifestyle you see in so many other groups from that time frame. I just wish there were more groups like them today.

+Dean Kaufman , I agree , well said , we should all help out our fellow brothers and sisters ( no matter of race) when any are in need, whether its just giving them 10$ ten Dollars or food or opening part of your home for them for a time ( if you trust them enough) , this is the min thing I interpreted from this song , is to help out another brother when they are in dire straits. He was using Mr Wendal as an example of a fellow American in time of a hand up in life. we should all help out our brothers, you never know when you your self become in need and hope and pray that some one helps you out.

      @JaxonSmithers 8 лет назад +17

+Dean Kaufman I was shocked they didn't continue to find success, not sure what happened after this album but they seemed to disappear which is sad. It was afro centric but you're absolutely right, there are also universal messages all throughout the album. I don't see an issue at all with a black group speaking to their own people

    Here, have a dollar,
in fact, no brother-man here, have two
Two dollars means a snack for me,
but it means a big deal to you
    "Be strong, serve God only,
know that if you do, beautiful heaven awaits"
That's the poem I wrote for the first time
I saw a man with no clothes, no money, no plate
    Mr. Wendal, that's his name,
no one ever knew his name cause he's a no-one
Never thought twice about spending on a ol' bum,
until I had the chance to really get to know one
Now that I know him, to give him money isn't charity
He gives me some knowledge, I buy him some shoes
And to think blacks spend all that money on big colleges,
still most of y'all come out confused
    [CHORUS:]
    Go ahead, Mr.Wendal (2x)
    Mr.Wendal has freedom,
a free that you and I think is dumb
Free to be without the worries of a quick to diss society
    for Mr.Wendal's a bum
    His only worries are sickness
and an occasional harassment by the police and their chase
    Uncivilized we call him,
    but I just saw him
eat off the food we waste
Civilization, are we really civilized, yes or no?
    Who are we to judge?
When thousands of innocent men could be brutally enslaved
and killed over a racist grudge
Mr. Wendal has tried to warn us about our ways
but we don't hear him talk
Is it his fault when we've gone too far,
and we got too far, cause on him we walk
    Mr.Wendal, a man, a human in flesh,
    but not by law
I feed you dignity to stand with pride,
realize that all in all you stand tall

I have custody of my son, and have a shit job that is no where close to what i trained to do. lost cars, 2 homes due to son's mother. at one point had nothing. then had a car. slept in that cause at least id be ready for a job.....
basically i was textbook homeless and slowly making it now. some arent as lucky as me. some were more lucky than me. should never judge people you don't know

I miss the 90s. Glad I got to grow up/come of age in them. No matter the genre of music be it rap or alternative, I miss messages in music. Yeah falling in and out of love and such are a part of life, but miss music with a conscience about world at large.

Fun fact: Arrested Development the music group sued Arrested Development the TV show for taking their name.
I too am a fan of both, but I knew of the group first and did think it was weird there was a TV show coming out with the group's name.

Mr. Wendall is "Sheriff" to me. The high school I attended wasn't exactly in the best part of town. Sheriff would be there at lunchtime to sell his drawings. I bought one of his little mermaid drawings for 2 dollars. He may have been homeless and crazy but he was one hell of an artist.

I still play this in the car, i was like 10 when this came out, pretty cool that is is such a powerful song, like to think it helped mold my empathy I have towards people that are like Mr. Wendel, we are all the same and all going to the same place one day, we are all one, when are people going to remember this, it is kind of important.

Unusually deep lyrics from a hip hop pop tune. Still resounds today, black oppression, narrow minded consumer/ materialist society.
It poses the question; Can we free ourselves from the shackles of conformity like those in minority (Mr Wendal) and live as one?
    There's still hope!

This is the first rap song I ever heard and saw as a kid growing up in the early 90's. i urge everyone who has children to let them listen to non-offensive hiphop like this growing up. they will develop a different way of thinking instead of the "thug mentality" most songs that feature black men portrait.
Arrested development kept me at peace when i was young. this is an amazing song! made me think and look at poor people different. i really miss the 90's... anyone have a time machine? lol #peace

    • @freezepeach74
      @freezepeach74 6 лет назад +6

Adrien Nurmimaki oh give me a break. Kendrick Lamar and Chance the Rapper are two of the biggest rappers right now and neither are thug rappers.

    • @adriennurmimaki6174
      @adriennurmimaki6174 6 лет назад +10

i agree but the majority are not famous as them, and FelicityGemini don't seem to know them, that's why i comment in the first place. so yeah lamar and chance are famous, but all the other great rappers? Oddisee, Mayday, Joey Badass, Logic or Watsky deserves more visibility then nicki minaj and cie but it ain't.
That's great that Chance and Kendrick are successfull but two mc's is that enough for you? And you know i m' not american, i'm french and France is a big rap/hip hop country but nobody in my country knows chance or kendrick, however they know all the shitty rappers, is that normal? is that encouragant? i don't think so.
Kendrick and Chance are monsters but i will not be satisfied by the actuel success of real rappers just for those two. It don't seems normal to me that FelicityGemini believes than the only good hip hop was made in 80' and 90's, cuz it's not and he will never made that comment if i knew chance, kendrick and cie. So are they famous enough ? no, otherwise he would know them, like so many other people unfortunately don't know 'em.
Sincerely, i'm an oldschool man raised by 90's US rap but i'm tired to see all these comments on 90's videos who says that good rap no longer exists today cuz it ain't, rap is honestly in very good shape if we don't look his charts and his sells but if we look behind the flashes and the crappy videos, we can see many great smart rappers doin magic music. So, people can't say that, they must be more curious, instead of beign satisified by rap that the medias serves us. But they're not, they prefer to say on youtube that hip hop's worhtless today, and a lot of great artists don't have the success and exposure they deserves and if a guy like you (who seems to be a good rap listener) is satisfied by all that, this is a state of mind's mistake and a bad sign.

+Asia Alonzo-Rodriguez I wouldn't be surprised if that name was used specifically for interchanging "Wendal" for "Window", or at least it was pronounced in that regard. It just seems like the message of the song implies "look out the window and see the people for who they are".
