Swimming with Manatees, Crystal River, Florida

Was a wonderful experience even if a little nervous initially. Even though visibility was poor due to recent storms, we got up close and personal with lots and lots of Manatees.

Did you learn anything about manatees that you can share?

Yes it was very educational, distance they travel shocked me, they can go 100’s of miles away during summer only to find their way back to the warm springs in Florida in winter. They have also had a tough time in recent years due to storms ripping out the sea grass they like to eat. You d stay with mother for four years but the impacts by boating is probably the most disturbing, you see lots of them with wounds from propellers. That’s sad and often happens when they are away from Florida. I hadn’t realised there are other Manatees around the world too. Very interesting creatures.
