After studying piano in Vienna, he had a career as a conductor, before settling in Königsberg, where he began to focus on composing and teaching piano. Köhler was also a well-known music critic and author, writing for the Hartungsche Zeitung, and contributing to the Signale für die musikalische Welt for about 40 years.
