It pays to be educated before you comment. California does not have an estate tax. The federal tax only applies to people that die with more than $13 million if they are single or $26 million if they are married.
@@glalza it shouldn't matter if someone is single or married, exemptions should be the same regardless. Someone needs to say these married/single exemptions are discriminatory.
If there's a property tax then nobody actually owns their home. You are merely a serf who must pay the Lord of the Manor an annual duty or lose your land. Property tax is thoroughly evil.
OK so how do we pay for the ships and sailors who protect our trade routes ? If you started out to build a country what would be your method of paying for the things we need to have without taxes? Don`t get me wrong I hate taxes too but if they are evil they are a necessary evil.
@@Dwayne-mb2uj this shows complete ignorance of how the present government actually funds itself. Your taxes don't fund government - deficit spending and money printing does. The true tax you pay is called inflation and while it isn't direct it certainly affects your life. All the taxes are minimal compared to this one. The federal government could right now eliminate all taxes and just print the money they need - they do this already so it isn't that drastic a step. Taxes however give them control which is always what the real goal was.
@@Dwayne-mb2uj there's a difference between taxes. Direct personal taxes on labor and perpetual taxes on property are evil and not necessary. Taxes should only ever be in the business world, because it's a cost to do business in a country that protects your business. So taxes and regulations on goods, as well as on sales or export/import taxes. Taxes should never be on a mans labor or on his home. Because every man has a right to life and liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Even a wild animal is allowed to burrow into the ground for a home tax free. But the human is enslaved.
The problem is most people, leading their busy lives, do not do their due diligence in reading through the material. I find that most propositions, not all, are not transparent and there’s usually a special interest group, in this case the Calif Realtor’a Assoc, that’s behind the measure with a particular agenda. The propositions are designed to trick the voting public. The realtors assoc wanted to increase the supply of houses by getting baby boomers to sell and take their tax base with them. Trouble is, it’s the capital gains tax that’s killing us too.
When we came to America 22 years ago, we started to work and never ask government about anything… After 7 years of hard working we bought town house and our property tax grows higher and higher. We are on pension now and think why it happened with us? People got apartments for nothing, we are sick and tired…
California legislators are just outright monsters and thieves, destroying family wealth for the simple reason that the idea of a Budget is just a formality to present to the public. Their actions to never operate within that budget and literally over spend by billions thereby running the state deep into the Red for funding pet projects (That no one voted for) just to make the legislators look good and in the meantime opens the door for kickbacks from those funds to donate to political campaigns that are funded from those pet project. This is indeed political money laundering. And we the citizens are left with the aftermath of increased cost of living in a looser state that California has become.

Wow! Thank you for riding herd on this, California Insider! If this death tax isn't repealed, the stampede out will truly turn it into Calizuela! Very informative video! 😮
Collectivists raise taxes to line politicians pockets and strengthen control over taxpayers. Taxpayers leave. Tax revenue declines. Politicians raise taxes to cover the loss of tax revenue. CA is in a death spiral. We escaped in 2018 and it is shocking how far downhill the state has gone since then. Too bad the election system in CA is completely corrupted and rigged. No way to vote themselves out of the dictatorship.
people 65 and over should not be paying property tax. they get nothing for it and some unscrupulous governments use it to seize property under tax liens putting seniors out of their homes.
We've had inheritance tax in the UK for years. It's a disgrace. We're one of the most taxed countries in the world. You can't look at something without being taxed for it. Don't be like the UK.
Inheritance tax is how the British people lost the family homes, estates and all the furnishings that went to auction when families couldn’t pay the inheritance taxes.😮 In the early 1970’s I worked for a business in Georgia, USA that went yearly to auctions at English homes and estates and bought fine antiques. They filled 1-2 large shipping containers each time. I helped restore the items that were then sold to wealthy Americans who put them in their offices and wrote them off as business expenses.
What a bunch of snakes! Good thing I read the fine print and I voted No on Proposition 19.Just filled it out and mailed it in. How do we find out how many more we need to reach one million?
I got hit with this after inheriting my aunts home. We had to go through non contested probate. It still took 6 months due to the slow courts. the property got reassessed higher than the house sold for (market value). The adjusted tax was for the time waiting for the permission to sell from the courts. Assesors office didn't care and said pay it
This, this and 100% this. Sorry to hear about Scott. Same thing happened to me. People need to do their research and not just watch youtube videos. It is not a question of when this tax law passed… it already passed. As for the people commenting about the unfairness of the old law (which is trying to be reinstated)… guess you like paying taxes, I do not.
Ass. told us we couldn't appeal anything. Would not provide notice of exclusion appl rejection nor a legal explanation as per BOE code. Broadstroke reasss accept and pay the new forever hike don't argue.
I retired from Assessor’s Office. When I saw a low reported value I knew there would be condition issues. I can’t use avg condition home sales to justify not accepting reported value from these transfers. I was probably the only one who’d spend time looking into it when I put value on the roll. Most appraisers wouldn't look deeper, causing calls/bisits to contest value, resulting in delay of bill correction and more trouble for trustees. I told every new appraiser, hoping he/she’d be more careful. Why not do it right from the get go? The mess has to be dealt with later that no one would be happy.
@@33Jenesisinteresting perspective. Thanks. In our case there was a condition issue for sure. We had to put 4 months of nights and weekends of work into the house along with some work done by contractors to sell.

The realtors are behind this whole thing to make $$$! More business for them! I’ve been fortunate enough to have used help u sell realtors to help sell two of my previous homes to save $$$. In each case I paid 0.5% to my guy but unfortunately the buyers agent still got 2.5-3% for absolutely nothing which is highway robbery. Having done the process essentially by myself, there is NO way it was $15,000 because that’s how much that was 2.5% would have been. The whole home buying process is shady and overly complicated on purpose so we have to use professionals.
Yep, Proposition 19 was called "Home Protection for Seniors, Severely Disabled, Families and Victims of Wildfire or Natural Disasters Act" It helped a few thousand fire victims but screwed millions of home owners with increased property taxes. It was authored by San Mateo Assemblymember Kevin Mullin and The California Association of Realtors Issues Mobilization PAC was the largest donor, contributing $40.40 million.
The ads promoting 19 didn't mention that it would put elderly heirs on the pavement because of massive tax increases nor did they say the funding came from real estate agents.

NARs support and sneaky tactics around prop 19 reaffirms my experience with at least half the realtors I have dealt with over the years - many have questionable ethics.
NO NO NO I I disagree prop 13 is the worst thing ever. My Mothers house in Malibu is worth 20 million and she is paying less taxes than I pay on my 500k because My parents bought this old shack in 1974 because it was slated to have a fwy placed on top of it at the time and it was very cheap. This has created a two tier system that is so unfair to the unlucky ones. This lady is lying her ass off on the propaganda channel.
Well I won't argue with you on that one. You are from there and would see the inequities. The problem we have here in Montana is that our houses are being OVER appaised every couple of years to the point where a lot of people are facing the possibility of being taxed out of their homes. The tax appraisal bears no relation to what the house would actually sell for. I see your point though. @@Dwayne-mb2uj

I was born in San Francisco in 1960 and raised in the Bay Area. I recall when my widowed mom died in 2001. At the time, my brother and I inheritated her home and sold it without any repercussions involving outrageous taxes. I had moved out of state after my mom's death to move closer to my husband's family. I missed the Bay Area and SF for years. No longer. The insane propositions that have passed such as this death tax have made life difficult if not impossible for the residents of CA. Its no wonder that thousands of people have moved out of state. So yes, I hope enough people of California sign the petition to repeal this death tax! I shared this video with friends in San Leandro and I hope they pass this on to others.

Speaking of PRIVATE PROPERTY... California business owners and their employees are legally allowed to possess a loaded and concealed firearm while working on company property without any kind of permit being required as per California Penal Code Sections 25605(a) and 26035... These same laws also cover your home as well as other private property.
For those that are complaining about Why seniors are allowed to pay low taxes thanks that their homes aren’t reassessed! Let me ask you Do you know how much they get from social security? Less than $2000 per month! It’s not right, an apartment in Fresno less than 800 square feet the rent is $1475 per month and after a year it will increase $200 more plus utilities, food, etc. Did you notice the increase amount of seniors working at your grocery stores? Or you thought they are working there just for fun, seniors should be protected because guess what in few years you will be one of them too… now imagine if in top of that you’re disabled or a veteran. Think about it
The more money we give them, the more they demand. There is no end. Your parents worked hard and paid taxes for that property and there’s no reason the state has any claim to a dime of it.
After my father passed away, they took over $27,000.00. I thought all taxes were paid at closing, and that was it. I was forced to pay due to the interest, which was so high. My mom and dad told me it was in a living trust, and all would be turned to me. No probate. What a shock for us, four kids! I pray I can get that money back!
i just abandoned my father’s home in another country when he died. i didn’t want to deal with protecting it from squatters and probating it and i live in another country
This is so scary. My mom just passed away last month 😢 my husband, my 2 boys & myself are planning to move in, in about 3 months to help take of my dad & the house ( he’s 87 ) I am an only child and also was told by mom & dad that my name is on everything and that the living trust covers everything once they’ve passed. This is very scary To think of this I love this house. I grew up here & want my kids to grow up here ( thank God 🙏 the neighborhood hasn’t changed much/ small community ) my parents bought his house back in ‘76 for $42,000.. I can’t imagine what the taxes would be now.. reassessed at current value.. that’s insane. I will be a resident in 3 months and I will be going with my dad when he does his taxes this year to see I can be added to the deed of the house maybe? Not sure how it all works.. but I’ll be damned if the state tries to take my family home 🏡
@@monkeybonetubeSorry for your loss, but you shouldn't be crying over the taxes when you are inheriting an enormously appreciated property. If its so hard, then sell it and get the money in the bank. There are millions of Californians who can't afford to buy a first home and they will have to shell out the same amount of taxes that you are crying about. That is unfair.
The word "pay" before the word "taxes", makes my blood boil. When you pay for anything else you get a good or service relevant to the price payed. And you get to CHOOSE what you pay for. If you're property is taken and you go to jail for not "paying", that's extortion.

@wasco1989 my question is, why we re paying taxes every year on something that we already own. We don't pay taxes for ex. on furniture or car that you drim paid for. If you stop paying property taxes, a county can foreclose on your house. So, who really owns your house?

Trusts don't protect your property from being reassessed. Families are being scrutinized while flippers aren't. Prop 19 was the most anti family proposition I can remember. It's the same in Florida, and it's absolutely a disgrace. Especially now, as there has been no actual increase in property values. The high assessments are rather due to our failing fiat currency, where there is no value in anything.
Tax assessor's office did that to me in San Diego. I paid property taxes, they said I didn't, I provided proof and they denied my claim that it was paid. I paid it again. Months later they sent me a refund.

Wow this is an eye opener. Where I live property tax assessments are done yearly. No one gets a break on taxes just because it is paid off or you are retired.
Government workers don’t care at all about the public they are supposed to serve. The worst thing a young person can do to society is to choose to go to work for the government. Why? Because we all look out for our own interest. That includes teachers, firemen and police officers. This leads to an ever increasing size of government. Complain all you want about taxes, but the diving force of all these taxes is people with their hands out. And I’m sure that none of these government workers is at all ashamed, but they are the driving force.
well said, solution: a 'capital gains' tax on on any and all PERS disbursement, it is those recipients who are responsible for a significant chunk of Cali deficit and taxes...
Looking a job growth in the last quarter of 2023, Washington, DC was telling us of how much job growth has grown under Biden. Actually looking at the real numbers, you will see that government jobs made the biggest gain. Actual manufacturing jobs wasn't hardly on the list at all.
government workers are not really paid well at all (except fireman). Most of them are making about 60k in places like Los Angeles, they are barely getting by. Their pensions are NOT large (contrary to popular opinion they changed the pensions back in the mid 2000s--- so most of the people you see now will not have much when they retire). The problem with government is their inability to fire morons. So they remain inefficient.
I am very happy about this new law because it means that a young family will be able to buy a home for raising their kids while instead of a select few getting tax abatement generation after generation. Very good law, we need more of this.

As a Californian, I am so sick of feeling like I'm living in some sort of experiment. And our politicians have about as much respect for us as scientists have towards their lab rats. I've lived here my whole life and they can make it as horrible as they want but I'm not leaving. California is a beautiful state with tons of resources and a lot of great people, but an insidious mental illness has taken over a majority of the population. We have set up the rest of the nation as our "evil other" and most of the crazy things we do are in response to imaginary threats posed by nonexistent foes. We have developed an all-encompassing contrarian attitude whereby we are automatically opposed to everything the rest of the country is in favor of. And this is not an intellectual thing... it is really more of a religious crusade... with all of the accompanying dogma and self-serving rationalizations. Californians believe - as much as a Christian believes in Jesus - that they are saving the world and that they and they alone are the only hope the world has for survival. Naturally, the reward is feeling like they are special and preordained for greatness, hence the almost bottomless arrogance displayed by the "saviors." We behave like a 10-year old prince next in line for the throne, and the thought has apparently crossed our mind that we could just slip a little poison into the King's drink and we'd rule that much faster. What the peasants think is irrelevant. It always is with tyrants.

If there's a property tax then nobody actually owns their home. You are merely a serf who must pay the Lord of the Manor an annual duty or lose your land. Property tax is thoroughly evil.
Exactly, that's why we need to fight it and all unjust taxes.
No difference with income taxes, if gov has a claim on your labor gov owns you by definition. When you are owned by another it define you as a slave.

How much longer will we suffer to these taxationmongers. Time to raise up California, and take back our state!

Inheritance tax is how the British people lost the family homes, estates and all the furnishings that went to auction when families couldn’t pay the inheritance taxes.😮
In the early 1970’s I worked for a business in Georgia, USA that went yearly to auctions at English homes and estates and bought fine antiques. They filled 1-2 large shipping containers each time. I am very happy about this new law because it means that a young family will be able to buy a home for raising their kids while instead of a select few getting tax abatement generation after generation. Very good law, we need more of this.
@@SammaVaca you are right in that this law is helping sales, mom's housing is in escrow. If the young family has to rent, rentals are getting scarcer and scarcer. How will the young family ever save a down payment with an income tax? The harder you work the more gov takes.
T.u. for ur efforts. We appreciate ur hard work on this matter.
That’s because prop 19 has artificially lowered taxes for years for the parents….in most other states I don’t get the option of moving into parents house.
in afghanistan there is no property tax either.
