I can’t wait to see the new cabin homestead with the greenhouse when it comes to the harvesting and cooking aspects of the channel. I’m thinking of so many great recipes that Shawn can and will be able to make. Just another great part of my favorite channel on You Tube.
These episodes when Shawn cooks wild game in this case quail which I love are some of my favorites. I remember him making duck confit and I so impressed and jealous.
I love that you bring to life what mainstream educators, schools and books teach is history. I always had a feeling of misguided teachings when we were being taught we were an "advanced" civilization. It's all prospective and you sir are far more advanced and worthy of the way of our future. Thank you for sharing.
The quail looked really tasty. I was pleased to see you then boiled up the bones to make soup. Delicious!! Your talk about wildlife, in particular raising quail was really interesting as was watching you make the small axe pouch. No end to your talents Shawn!
Hey Shawn. Hello from Ottawa. Have been following you since the early days. Was a fan of Dick Prenocke before he was a 'thing' and that's how I came across you. Have been battling some pretty awful health issues over the last 3 years that took me from an avid outdoorsman with my fearless Lab "Layla" to fighting to survive the day to day. Just want to encourage you that I find your videos to be a wonderful escape back into those things I love and used to do as a boy growing up in rural Newfoundland. Keep doing what you're doing. You are tapping into the need to simplify. Blessings to you and your family.
Thank you for showing how you cook beaver tail and the quail and explaining how you can grow quail in just 6 weeks. That food looks so good. You have a really good way of explaining things.
Super nice little video, looks like you still have snow, lol. So cozy in there, just love that wood stove, nice and big and love the color it is, blue. Love the feel of going back in time.
Great to hear you talk about your future food goals and the environmental perspective. Understanding what does and what cannot work in a locality is very interesting, especially in a supermarket based western world
SHAWN,I think you will grow alot more garden items,I have to say I'm with Cali this time, lol always ENJOY maybe in spring may want to start berets planting, they spread very fast ,ONE DAY AT A TIME 🐾♥️🐾♥️🐾♥️🐾♥️🐾♥️☘
My people are from Oklahoma and the elders always talked about the wild game they hunted and ate and how good it was. I could never imagine. Now I can!!!
Line Danzer this really bothered me too read ... it’s s god given right too live from the land ! And to see people who’ve never hunted trapped wish they could taste wild game like the great lord intended! It breaks my heart! Maybe you could join a isaak Walton league and share in their harvests!
@@stevedingman474 Actually, my family moved to California in the late 1940s where they continued to harvest their own food. They grew every type of fruit tree and vegetable that you could think of and also raised their own chickens. They purchased their meat from a butcher who also came here from the south. They "canned" their own preserves, jams, jellies, and vegetables. I was in junior high school before we ever had a can opener. But I never had the opportunity to taste the wild game that they spoke of.
Using the quail bones to make the soup is great! I truly believe people are meant to be omnivores--not telling anyone what to do at all, to each their own. But we evolved to be omnivores, have the teeth of omnivores. A very relaxing, enjoyable video. Nice leatherwork too!
Never quite got the taste for beaver tail but ate many, many hind quarters and it is one of my favorite meats. Beaver have a very high quality diet so the meat is very nutritious.
All of your videos are fantastic. Nice food . I have watched many of your videos, and there wasn't one that I didn't like. You have inspired me. Wonderful job on all your videos.
Really looking forward to the quail and garden videos! Also nice to see you making use of the beaver tail, not many people use it and as a trapper it's refreshing to see it being used.
Enjoy watching you cook things that are not found in the grocery store. Looking forward to see what animals you end up with as the year proceeds, and how you take care of them. Thanks again for sharing another great video ❤️
It`s wonderful to hear your thoughts about relying on more sustainable and local food sources. If people watching tried to change just one thing about their diet to become more local, it would have a tremendously positive impact. Thank you. From Japan.
Amazing videos as always. Thanks for sharing your present and future life journeys with everyone. I am so envious and wish my hubby and I had done this earlier in our lives. We're 63 and 67 and don't think projects like this are in our future. But we are inspired by all you do. Keep up the great work!
I was considering myself fortunate last week that we didn't get the snow that you got, then last night, we got a couple inches of white and fluffy dumped on us here in Milwaukee, followed by rain that depleted the level rapidly! Ah, Spring! You taunt us mortals! Was salivating while watching you work over those quail! Even my dog was raptly attentive to that portion of the vid!
Love your awareness and mindful intention of creating a sane life that mutually supports yourself and the Earth around you. You are a teacher communicating by attraction which is a far superior method to promotion and moralizing. I would like to hear in a subsequent video what you do to nurture and preserve your forest so that others and my self can learn from you. ;)
I used to be very against hunting, but having watched your channel, my eyes have been opened. I thank you for that. I am now able to see how it is a practical part of a “more” self reliant and yet resource friendly and sustainable existence. My brother in law has often invited me along on hunting excursions, and until now I have refused. He is a good man, and does not just hunt for sport. He despises “trophy” hunting and, like yourself, culls only what he and his family and community need and can consume. I thoroughly enjoy witnessing your continuing quest for more Self Reliance. What is up next for the sauna cabin build?
When I lived on a hunting preserve the cooks would brown the Quail the make a gravey and put them in the gravey and cover it with foil and bake them which made them very tender and juicy. Love quail
Quail looks delicious, especially with the hot sauce. I thought I read somewhere that you can pickle 50 quail eggs in a one quart canning jar. I will stay tunes for your upcoming Quail endeavors.
What a spectacular video! Warm, cozy, and ideal for the person who loves God's creation. Thank you for your positive presentations of forests, land, and water. Again, thank you.
I live in North East Texas its been in the high 80s the past couple of days here. Mowed yesterday and today got our onion bed ready to plant. We are getting fresh asparagus already. Love that stuff!
That quail looks awsome from here! Beaver tail... Hmmm never tried , but , now it' s on my list to do! Lol! Still snowing? Bah humbug! Come on " Mother Earth", give the folks a break Geez! Lol! Stay warm you n your's n Cali! Spring is going to be here! Thanks for sharing! ATB from sunny Wintergarden,Florida!
Shawn, you never cease to amaze me, watching your videos really helps this old man get thru his days. It keeps me remembering the days of old when I could do these things. Some of my fondest memories are the days of hunting and sitting in the middle of Gods living room enjoying watching his creatures come to life every morning. Actually, the hunting was secondary to any woodland adventures. I miss most of all hunting Morel Mushrooms. A deer or two a year was our staple of meat for years. Thanks for all of your hard work and good luck in your endeavors.
Wow so delicious Quails and Quail-eggs loved them filled... ever since my childhood 😋👌 First filled, than panfried and than low temp baked out of the oven! Super tasty to me !!
Maybe a copper cooking vent?, maybe that’s overboard for the cabin. Beautiful quail!, maple glaze would be nice.really think it’s cool that you raise quail!. I want to do that!. Quail eggs are amazing!.
I tried quail and roe deer while in Europe and was surprised how good it was. I thought the quail was better than chicken and the venison although a bit gamey, tasted great once i got used to the specific flavor. I also occasionally eat rabbit and think it is quite good. Really enjoy the videos and the knowledge provided in them.
I am SO tired of this technology life! People like you have inspired people like me to research, practice, save and then go do it eventually and walk away from modern conveniences!
@My Self Reliance - Shawn....When you find the time, you seriously need to put together a cookbook of your favorite recipes and stuff you make....I'm serious! I'd buy one in a heartbeat. Maybe look at adding that to the list of stuff you may do in the future!
@Rum Braker I'll bet they will do well in a slow cooker, sitting on a bed of sliced onions! I like doing chicken thighs or quarters that way with a lot of spice mixes I pre-make, and keep on hand just for that purpose ..... the meat just falls off the bones ~8^) Take care.
Happy birthday from Virginia!!! Good stuff as always. My partner-in-crime Ron and I are working towards a similar life as yours. Building a log workshop as a practice project this spring out of 55 tulip poplars we felled a last year. Learned sooo much from you already.
Sort of makes me feel guilty for living 'on grid' .... bon appetit Very nice... then again, we've come to expect that from you. Looking forward to learning what you learn and maybe a piece if that sour dough bread.
oh man that look so good my favorite snack with a beer use to be hard boiled quail eggs and coarse sea salt. I miss that a lot and been thinking about raising some with the chickens and pheasants this year..
Shawn great video. I have a suggestion on your banjo. Get you some lemon 🍋 oil or on the label it’s called ( Lemoil) for musical instruments & spray the body, neck & fretboard down & wipe it off. That wood heater can really dry they banjo wood out. Just a tip. 👍
You sir, are the MAN! I dig this whole scene!... Very interesting what you say about domestic quail! I honestly have never even thought about it, even though Ive eaten many domestic quail eggs (dah!)! Hi Shawn, the next time you have quail try them spatchcocked . I bet they would be awesome! I do my chicken like that on my bbq and they are so delicious and they cook faster. Lovin' your channels
Dinner sure looked tasty! I once had quail at a restaurant in Ti Juana, Mex. Really liked them, though I think they may have been smaller than yours.
