  • An intricate network of subterranean caverns, rivers and lakes wind almost surreptitiously beneath Mexico’s southern Yucatan peninsula. Now, construction of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s crown jewel project - the Maya Train - is rapidly destroying part of that hidden underground world, already under threat by development and mass tourism. Actually I'm on the government's side here. This will sound harsh. But a few pillars in a cave is better than an urban sprawl of cars above or crossing the jungle. The Pillars will eventually calcify over given time and that system can heal.
So the choice is a few concrete pillars or clearing of a forest. If the elevated line wasn't built you'd have a train tract breaking
up the forestry migration. So you can't win 100% of the time. The only advice i'd give to this is to reinforce the Pillars even more at the base and conjoin the pillars to the ground to ensure the rock doesn't dissolve away quicker than nature allows.

The saddest part about this aside for the ecocide is the communities of people that will eventually get displaced. Sure, it’s going to bring more business into small businesses and such but it’ll only be a matter of time until corporations begin flocking into yet another untouched ecosystem all for the end goal of making billions. Absolutely disgusting.
