I'm not sure about the pay but they do travel with the team and get a pretty nice per diem(most travelling employees get per diem like the players). Teams cover their travel as well because they are together 24-7 just about.
I feel like I could literally listen to Matt talk about anything for 10 minutes lol the little tangents like Outback are the best. Also glad to know I had had the same diet playing HS baseball as a major leaguer!
One of your best videos. You're one of very few RUclipsrs who can give actual stories and non-googleable (is that a word?) details about professional baseball. Keep doing these. Doesn't really matter if you've covered the topic before, cause as is the case with this video, you'll probably think of some new things to say anyway.
Enjoyed the video 👍 When I played in the minors with the Mariners we used to get soup and peanut butter and jelly for lunch . In 1990 they put me on the big league roster for one day during spring training ( mainly to catch bullpens ) , when I saw that the big leaguers had a six foot long sub on a table with all the trimmings , fresh fruit , and a wall of candy ! It was definitely a culture shock .
Another great video Matt! Love your channel man, baseball is my favorite sport and it’s great seeing a channel from a former player. Keep up the fantastic work!
Thank you for making these, very interesting. I am curious about something though. You guys are professional athletes and the front office has a vested interest in the health of their players. You would think they would have nutritionists working with players more. Not just to keep players from only eating big macs, but you also have guys coming up from the Dominican republic or Panama and some of these guys haven't had enough to eat growing up. e.g. Mariano Rivera in his younger days. So do they ever keep a training table or have nutritionists working with you, and do you think Major League baseball should do more of that, especially in A ball?
I would have liked to know about the food baseball players need to eat to stay in shape, is there a club cook ? I guess in baseball it does not work like that? In cycling for example a breakfast included 4 eggs, avocado and salmon. That would have been interesting to know
Baseball players don't really need to be in great shape lol. Most are, but there are also a good amount that are not. Thanks for watching and commenting!
@@AntonelliBaseball What was the line, when John Kruk was on Letterman and was smoking, Letterman said hey, why are you smoking, you're an athlete. Kruk's response: I'm not an athlete, I'm a ballplayer.
Hey Mat can you do a video about release point and also how infielders know they have a 4 sceme grip on the ball and they have to get rid of the ball really fast as if you have Billy Hamilton were running down the line and he hit a ground ball to me .(middle infielder)
Being as though most your subs are really young I'm guessing, you should talk about the demand it takes being a college baseball player. I coach at a junior college in Washington. Our kids are up at 6 for weights, class then practice the study hall. I'm guessing not much difference at D1 level
A friend who was an MLB pitcher said he had a team nutritionist who worked with him and the other team players. He always talks about his 2 different diets during the season. My sons who has worked with a current MLB pitcher off season, team supplied him with a training couch who traveled to the players in the off season. Between rehabs did you workout off season?
Thanks Matt, I really like your videos. When you were on the road in the Major leagues, did you have a roommate? Can you do a video about the experience of staying in those hotels in the Major leagues? Thanks
@Diet Poweraids, not every minor league stadium has a weight room, so you are at the mercy of what is available in town. The motel might have a minimal workout area(treadmill, rowing machine and a Bowflex/Nautilus). Some towns with gyms might let them by with a small per day price or may even let them in for free but even then, these guys don't have a car to use. The motel might have a bus but that's a big IF. Add all of this onto the fact that they have to be at the ballpark at least 2-3 hours before game time.....
what about the menu on Charter Flights? I was reading once where the Seahawks had a menu on a Charter Delta flight and the beat reporter said the plane they had a menu for the MLB team that had previously used the same plane?
I know up till the late 90’s amphetamines were allowed in clubhouses, but then it was banned. If they allowed that to wind you up for a game I would have thought having hard liquor would have been there to wind you down. I’m pretty sure guys like Billy Martin would have had plenty of bottles in his office.
Matt, just wondering if you have any funny stories about your time in the minors about food. Whether it was the manager blowing up the post game spread or teammates who knew how to "supplement" their meal money. I've heard plenty of stories about Charlie Kerfield trading items with fans for food.
Omg Matt your literally me I went to Outback and I was like this is really nice and my parents were like this is just like a chili’s or a lunch/ dinner ihop and I’m like O

LOL I was expecting lots of fish, chicken (baked or grilled, not fried), whole grains, fruit, raw veggies, nuts, you know, CLEAN food. Thanks for the insight, coach.
It sounds like if they have made to order cafes in a lot of these clubhouses, you definitely COULD get those things. But honestly, these guys burn so many calories, they may as well eat whatever they want
How do you pay for that room service? Do you just charge it to the room and it ends up on the team owner's tab, or do you pay for it with meal money or your regular compensation when you check out of the hotel?
Always thought it was crazy players get $100 a day for meal money when they have food at the stadium. I'm sure most players just pocket that money and don't eat out that often.
When Frank McCourt owned the Dodgers I am surprised that there were even chicken fingers at Dodger Stadium. I remember hearing a story about Jamie McCourt and they said the floor of her car was covered with taco bell wrappers. That’s about all you need to know about the McCourts. I mean they were basically squatting at dodger stadium. Thank god thats over.
Interesting video Matt. I don't believe you mentioned besides steak , what else that was interesting and different? One last. Question, did you eat at any of the New York stadium's ?Happy New Years Matt !
You seem so enthusiastic about the game and coaching. Do you think if you had been able to beat a few injuries and play in the majors longer, make more money you would have just retired? Or would you have stayed in the game in some facet like the coaching you do now?
Do they have pace of play fines as in mlb? When jonathan papelbon pitched for boston he was fined 2 or 300 dollars each time he loafed in from the bullpen. He said he did not care, he was rich. Also mickey lolich pitched 376 innings in 1971, why cant pitchers pitch anymore?
Pitchers can pitch that much but aren't allowed to. If they had had the measuring tools to examine it back in 1971 they would've probably found that his efficiency dropped a crazy amount after that many pitches. Sabermetrics actually started back in 1971, which is why you'll see a steady decline in pitched innings from year to year since then
I heard it is kind of an unwritten rule that when a player gets injured in the majors, he usually supplies food while on his rehab at the minor league team? Or it might have been something similar that I heard.. can you confirm/deny?
How do teams draft players in the later rounds (10th round or higher)? I feel like since there are so many rounds in the draft, they do not want to be there all day so do they just pick random players at that point?
They create a board by listening to everyone in their scouting system. For lower round picks they typically depend on their area scouts. Thanks for watching and commenting!!
It’s surprising organizations don’t provide better food for their minor league players. Optimizing nutrition and diet will optimize performance and recovery, so why aren’t MLB organizations prioritizing this for their prospects??
completely agree. Freak injuries happen, but the small injuries/issues can really be minimized by optimizing diet, and in a sport with such a crazy schedule you'd think minimizing day-to-day issues would be top priority. Hell, they'd probably nearly save the extra cost of better food by using less medical supplies
You two don't understand the way things work in the minors. The overwhelming majority of minor league teams don't pay their players, the parent clubs do. Very few MLB teams actually own their affiliates and there are independent teams as well. What they get to eat at the stadium is provided by the other team for the most part. And the remark about about medical supplies.... What part of your ass did you get THAT from? It's beyond ignorant!

$2500/day is insane, and that's only on a $400k salary.
I'm lucky if I can make $2500/month.
