Not to be the “Biltmore stick police” but one of your earlier visuals showed a tree being measured with a log scale stick, instead of the tree scale (diameter) stick. Good video!
Thank you for the good video. We are looking to sell our timber. We recieved a random letter asking about helping us harvest our timber from 97 acres. It was previously thinned out 20 years ago. The man is offering to pay us straight up 25,000. Withba contract that allows them to finish up some time in 2026. Does this sound like a good opportunity for us or should we go another route?
If i'm doing my own clearing for build sites and pasture can I not just haul loads myself to the mill? Skip the middle man? And would the mills pay enough for pulp wood and lumber logs to make it worth my time? I have a mill 10 miles from my property.
Yes that can definitely work. You’ll want to have them come out and price the logs before you haul them in. Once you haul them in they know it’s more work to take them somewhere else vs taking what they offer you.
I recently bought a property in central Tennessee 50 acres I know that it was select cut about 15 years ago but I still believe I have timber what is the least amount of trees they would come out I’m thinking I probably got 40 trees 50 trees maybe there are 16 in above 4 feet off the ground I like your videos
My question is we have a big Sequoia that needs to come down because the root system is damaging our septic system. We live outside the Tacoma Washington area. Do we need a consultant or who do we contact for help? Thank you for your time, Kind regards, Susan
Great question. For one tree like that you will more than likely not be getting paid for your tree, the cost to take one individual tree typically costs more than it’s worth. You will want to look up a tree removal company local to you, get several companies to give prices so you are for sure not over paying to have it removed.
I have a property in California Pines close to Altura California and I was thinking about selling my trees but I have no clue what is the process until I saw your video however it’s still very confusing because you keep saying, Your consultan where do you get a tree consultant and how do you know which consultant is going to help you. By any chance do you have someone you might recommend in the area of California Pines. I also was thinking about selling my 1 acre property it’s the same property where I have the trees.
Unfortunately the logging industry varies so much from area to area. I am very knowledgeable in ohio and surrounding areas but most companies operate very differently out west. All that said very few companies will want to mess with a property as small as 1 acre. If you want it cleared you will most likely need to find a land clearing company which may/may not be able to pay for the trees.
If I purchase 50 acres in Kentucky what is an average dollar amount of timber I could expect to be able to sell? I realize this is difficult to answer.
It’s really an impossible question to answer as it simply comes down to the quality and quality of the timber. Without seeing it there is no way of knowing.
Hardwoods (oak, hickory, etc.) will bring the most money, but it will take away from the beauty of your land, and you will likely never see it look that way again in your lifetime. Ideally you will have some patches of pine (loblolly, longleaf, slash, etc.) that you can cut, and then replant the next year. Leave your hardwoods alone.
@@russbolton947Terrible advice. As long as proper TSI is done pre or post harvest there is absolutely nothing wrong with harvesting hardwoods. In fact, they need to be harvested to improve habitat & to capitalize on their value before they begin going downhill and rotting in the middle.
What is the minimal number of tree’s do I need to make a profit? I brought a propert with about 6 tree’s on it that is on a cable line and I need it gone but would rather make money then pay money
A logging crew generally need at least 10 loads of timber to make it worth setting up. If its pulp, that's around 800 trees. If you have chip-n-saw that would require 400 trees.
I am in ohio and only travel to parts of the bordering states. In the future I am hoping to build a platform that promotes reputable companies in the states that I am unable to service but I currently do not have any contacts in your area. I would recommend starting with your state forester and see if he has any recommendations.
Unfortunately that is outside of my service area (Ohio) I would recommend finding a local consultant or getting some local mills to come bid on your timber. Make sure you get multiple bids and that they bid on the same trees
Need to clear an acer for a house….there is mostly white oak how many trees would be profitable to cut…… I have more than an acer just don’t wanna cut it, if we don’t have to
You’ll be looking for a reputable independent “forester”. If you don’t know of anyone in your area reach out to your state forester and have them point you in the right direction. I serve Ohio and parts of the bordering states. Feel free to reach out if you are in my area!
just purchased 30 acres and this was very helpful.
THANK YOU SO MUCH! VERY VERY HELPFUL. I HOPE I REMEMBER EVEYTHING YOU SAID WHEN I SELL MINE...LY

This was one of my older videos, we try to have the Broll reflect what’s being discussed now as much as possible.

Always get multiple bids to make sure.

In our area that wouldn’t be enough to entice a buyer. Most guys are looking for 18” and larger
Thanks for getting back to me im in ny
Is it usually a days pay or by the trip
Per trip
I would check around with some other companies and make sure that that’s what most people do before you agreed to it.
In my area, that’s very uncommon

Good info.
will they only come out to large wooded area? what about homes under 1 acre?
Typically it will need to be more than an acre unless it’s all walnut.
You will wind up paying to have trees taken out on 1 acre.

Hi is it normal to have to pay 50 percent of the cost of trucking the harvestdlogs
Depends, in my area it isn’t but I have heard of some people doing that.

@@treestandforestry I understand. could you say what a good piece of land would yield vs. not so good?
which type of tree is the most profitable to sell once you've already bought wooded land?

How much are cedar trees worth? I have about 25-30 of them. They are 40-60 foot tall and 20-40 inches in diameter. Please Respond 🙏 .
Here in Ohio we do not harvest cedar. I know there is a market for them but I do not know the value of them.
