Great video....I got a Volca Drum after seeing your unboxing.... It's fantastic... The sounds are unique and should be played as loud as possible......
@@FreeBeat was enjoying your very straightforward tutorial and about to update it when i noticed it already was. Nonetheless, you helped me figure that out and i thank you for it! Going through your other videos on the volca drum atm.
Thanks thats really helpful. I had a DFAM on my wishlist for whacky percussive hardware until I go this, way more powerful and a fraction of the price! This takes it another step further...
Good to know. Refreshing to see something that updates over iOS (on a phone!), though I would hope that my Drum- which only shipped a few days back- would have updated firmware already…
If you're updating from an iPhone, make sure to disable the volume limiter, otherwise it will not work. This took me a couple of minutes to figure out.
Hmm...I bought mine a month ago, and it says it has the same firmware MAI 0114 as you. But I cannot change the pitch to individual notes, it changes it to all at once. I wonder why... :/
The glide/portamento on the pitch change is an annoyance. It's the one thing I wish could be changed. That said, you can use that feature by exploiting changing the pitch of non-active steps (no notes on them or just turned off) to affect the tail of the note before it if the release time is long enough.
Not sure what I'm doing wrong. I have version 1.15, and I have QPI enabled, but my unit won't let me adjust the steps individually. When I hold the step, just like you did, it changes the pitch for ALL steps on that part. Any advice?
Can someone help me. My volca drum is buffering when i use 16th notes. With 8 its fine. I already checked the choke and dit a factory reset. Im out of hope and i think im returning it. Because no one has the same problem. Anyone?
the volca Drum is something i will never sell. once you understand how to add variety with split steps and probability on top of using the step jump and then messing with it using the wave resonator you can do some wild stuff with just a single 16 step program while playing live. and it's so much fun too. if you really want to get wild you can have it play chords and weird arp sequences by using the pitch quantization and setting the pitch to different values per layer and per step. Using 2 parts for chords and arp sequences will give you the ability to have 4 note chords per step and 4 percussion sounds (that you can modulate live on the fly or with motion sequencing), which is pretty wild considering what I paid for mine ($100 new!).
I have QPI on. When hold a step and turn the pitch wheel in edit/step mode (not playing) individual notes are not saved but rather, return to where I turned the pitch wheel last. Anyone else having this issue?
Im having troble with this feature. I activate it for part, making sequence and when I hold one of steps and change pitch it changes all steps. So basically it plays same pitch for all steps?
I agree the pitch-bend "feature" is not wanted in this instance, but the general way that Motion works is it starts with the existing setting and then changes it over the course of playing the note, so technically Korg is doing it correctly. I suppose they could add a new setting via firmware to just play the note at its most "extreme" setting, if that's even possible, but that might screw up other Motion settings where you want that. A major design change would be to add a "Motion Curve", which I think is way beyond the scope of an inexpensive box like this. My workaround is to create a kit where each part uses its 2 layers to create different intervals, say C3-E3 for part 1 and E3-G3 for part 2, you can also put different wave settings per part to get an interesting sound. For this I don't do Motion at all, it makes a sort of marimba sound, you might not even recognize it's coming from a Volca Drum. Thanks for the video, Pitch Quantize really gives you a new, different device!
I actually really like that pitch quantization still works the same way as the rest of the motion sequencing. It just helps the drums stand out even more! That being said, that's a fantastic workaround. Thanks for sharing!
Sorry but you made a mistake . In your case you have to dial in the same note from step 1 to 4, next 5 til 8 etc. etc. Shorten the Decay so that they don't overlap a that is it ...
@@FreeBeat it is something different completely. It has its sound and a little variation and that's it, while the drum is... a lot of possibilities. Except for the limitations I enjoyed jamming with the beats, on it's own, it can get crazy. But as a drum machine, I'd prefer something else. good old 808 or something synth-based like the drum.
I listened to the update wav file and its a Korg engineer listing all of the notes.

Glad you're loving it :) and I agree, the drum deserves to be cranked to 11!
Cheers, man. I didn’t know I could update the firmware. Just got mine and six hours just disappeared 😂😂
Awesome! Have fun :)
THANK YOU! I didn't understand that pitch could be changed _for a single sequencer step_ . The "manual" for this box is a bad joke. Nice work!
Yeah the manual...isn't great lol. Thanks so much for watching!
How are you doing that? My unit doesn't want to do that.
i was happy to find the Volca drum i bought today had the firmware latest preinstalled after checking the version.
That's good to hear! Where did you buy from, if you don't mind me asking?
@@FreeBeat I'm in Canada, bought it from Long & McQuade.
Just to confirm , 1.14 is still the latest version to date right?
@@r3dsnow757 Yes it is! Looks like it's over 2 years old at this point, so a lot of units should be shipping with it. Good to know :)

i wish they added a usb jack for midi/updates. but this is for sure an interesting way to update firmware!
Yeah it certainly is haha
Thank you.
Now i guess the midi problems are solved.
Now it should be running only on one midi channel.
Have a good day

@@FreeBeat Think I saw that from Undulations vids on the Drum. They're some of the best vids on it for doing weird things.
So helpful, cheers! 🙂🤖
Happy to help! Thanks :)
mine, bought in summer 2022, already has pitch quantize in the parameter options.say you I already have the new firmware?
Yup, sounds like you're already on the latest firmware :)
Да в "махарайке"(приборе) присутствует проблема с квантовкой. Иногда прямо в руках плывет. Заметил при синхронизации темпа с Серато.

If i do it this upgrade the kit and song saving before in the volca drum can be delating ?
Sorry, I'm not exactly sure what you're asking.
@@FreeBeat i mean... will the upgrade delete my saved kit and song library ?

Where the hell do you get a phone with an audio jack?

You know what I was able to do exactly what FB does in this video once. But since then I’m having the same issue and it drives me mad!!
Ha I just read below, you must have motion turned ON by pressing FUNCTION + step 12.
More please!
You got it!

mate, he doesnt tell you to turn motion on.func+key 12so that LED is lit.
