A Wyoming-born private complicit in the massacre was actually brought up on charges related to crimes against humanity. Upon hearing his sentence, he began to scream at the court: "Come on, dude- leave me alone! I'm autistic!"
As an American high school student back in the 2000s, I had to do my own research on the Vietnam War because we only skimmed over it. I think our teachers were too nervous to talk about it. You know, being taught that we were the liberators of the world and all.
No, it's pretty much a worldwide phenomenon that more recent history gets neglected, mostly because if you're proceeding chronologically, you start reaching recent events at the same time as testing, accumulated delays, and various other events sap time to cover them.
@@brandonpayne1207 It's more than just that, I was also a high school student in the 2000s (graduated 2003) and the Vietnam War is not covered extensively in our public education system at all here in the US, regardless of the teacher. It's the conflict that the US public wishes to forget, collectively speaking, because it's the conflict that we were on the losing side of and there were plenty of accounts of atrocities we were involved in which makes people uncomfortable. This isn't unique to us either - history classes in other countries also tend to gloss over the shameful parts of those countries' pasts as well, leaving the more detailed dives into the actual history for those who pursue it in secondary education or seeking more information on their own time.
In war, they never do. If you think the Nuremberg Trials gave justice to the millions who died for little to no reason then you're kidding yourself. Not saying that the Trials had no purpose, it allowed future generations, us, to learn from the mistakes of the time, but make no mistake, if we're talking about "justice" then what the trials accomplished was only a drop in the ocean.
You can't escape bias. I'm just glad you don't take offense to this particular bias - that being pro human rights and anti-American nationalism. If you took offense, I wouldn't bother treating you with any kind of respect. But do know that bias is never something you can avoid. It's better to understand it than to pretend it doesn't exist.
I think things like this cannot really be biased unless there is distortion of the objective facts. What you choose to take away from it is up to you, but the facts remain.
@@RillianGrant But what facts you do and don't present, and even how you present them, is also bias. A lot of people are very affected by how messages are presented - I can make a movie where the message is to not be a racist, but if I do it badly people will become spiteful towards what should be my good message. The opposite also happens, where awful ideas gain more traction than they should because they're presented in a way that resonates with people's emotions. Birth of a Nation is a great example of that. If someone is bothering to show you something, it's for a reason, and that reason is the bias. There is no such thing as unbiased information, because information is only neutral if it's irrelevant.
I wonder what happened to him. He easy could be charged with insubordination for refusing to follow orders. I wouldn't put it past the military to have a charge for shooting yourself just to avoid duty.
I remember when all this happened. I was 11 years old, and I remember thinking it was horrible. My dad was in Thailand during Vietnam, and he never talked about it. I happened to overhear him talking to another Vietnam veteran about what he'd gone through when I was about 14. No wonder he never talked about it except with someone else who understood.
16NOV2021 - I'm in tears. Again. Every time I hear this I break down. I broke down when I heard it the first time so many, many years ago. The adage "war is hell" is an understatement. By my age I missed Viet Nam by one year, but growing up and hearing of it every single day, I just expected my time to go would one day be made manifest. The relief of not going though, does not comfort me some days, for I knew far too many who returned, changed, not the people they were. I tell myself, " . . . neither shall they learn war anymore." Isiah chapter 2, verse 4. This is my hope.
Now there's a statement that no one can get behind, because it makey no sensy. Does anyone read what they write before they post it? I'll get my team of researchers to decode that post😖😋
"Well, you see Willard . . . In this war, things get confused out there, power, ideals, the old morality, practical military necessity. But out there with these natives, it must be a temptation to be god. Because there's a conflict in every human heart, between the rational and the irrational, between good and evil. And good does not always triumph. Sometimes, the dark side overcomes what Lincoln called the better angels of our nature. Every man has got a breaking point. You and I have one. Walter Kurtz has reached his. And very obviously, he has gone insane."

I think the craziest part of the My Lai Massacre that you didn't bring up was the legend or myth of The Green Phantom. Many soldiers reported seeing it and hearing a demonic laugh, and the figure always seemed to show up whenever r*pe had occured, which had led many to believe the phantom was anti--r*pe.

There couldn't be a funnier way to prove bigger youtube channels just grab whatever shocking images they find on the internet. I have been laughing for 30 minutes straight. Jesus christ this is hilarious. Cobes is the funniest guy on the internet in the most unintentional way. It's even better that the guy edited himself in with a serious face, but his glasses are super crooked, almost like a call back to drunk Cobes. Hands down the most hilarious youtube thumbnail I've ever seen on RUclips, and I've had this account since 2006.

No. We literally skipped that section of the book... We could tell our teacher wasn't comfortable talking about it.
@@Dreznin ya i agree with you. school system just can't function. it's impossible. especially public ones.
Cool! So what did your research turn up about the Dak Son massacre?
The worst thing about this: the dead never got the justice they deserved.
Not to mention that this was hardly an isolated incident; it just gets the most attention.
In wartime, the dead seldom get the justice they deserved. That's true for both aggressor and victim.
The justice they deserved would be not to have been slaughtered
The real worst thing is that it happened again in Iraq. 😧😧😧
A very tough subject. Kudos to you for presenting it in a non-biased manner.
Thank you.
@@monsieurdorgat6864 Very good point. I sometimes dispair at people's inability to be unbiased

Never heard about that soldier who shot himself on the foot to avoid participating
I wonder what happened to him. He easy could be charged with insubordination for refusing to follow orders. I wouldn't put it past the military to have a charge for shooting yourself just to avoid duty.
There is a photo of him in the FOUR HOURS IN MY LAI documentary here on YT
it was insanely common
I remember when all this happened. I was 11 years old, and I remember thinking it was horrible. My dad was in Thailand during Vietnam, and he never talked about it. I happened to overhear him talking to another Vietnam veteran about what he'd gone through when I was about 14. No wonder he never talked about it except with someone else who understood.
So you're dad was having a lovely holiday in Thailand, while everyone was fighting?

16NOV2021 - I'm in tears. Again. Every time I hear this I break down. I broke down when I heard it the first time so many, many years ago. The adage "war is hell" is an understatement. By my age I missed Viet Nam by one year, but growing up and hearing of it every single day, I just expected my time to go would one day be made manifest. The relief of not going though, does not comfort me some days, for I knew far too many who returned, changed, not the people they were. I tell myself, " . . . neither shall they learn war anymore." Isiah chapter 2, verse 4. This is my hope.
