The New York Mets built the most expensive team ever to chase a World Series, but after half a year the team already started imploding. When Steve Cohen took over ownership of the Mets he set his sights on a championship no matter what it cost him. He added more and more, eventually shattering the record for the highest payroll in MLB history in 2023. But New York failed to live up to expectations, and after half a season decided to trade away pieces and shift their focus to the future. In this video, we'll look at how the Mets got here, how this team that was so focused on winning it all now has been near the bottom of the league the last two years, and where they go from here.

@@cybercatgaming6052 My criticism of it that you'd never read because you're too dumb and lazy to
There's a real glossing over of just how much money the Mets have been paying to people who are not on the roster. In 2023 they paid Cano $20.25 mil, McCann $9.3 mil, Ruf $3.25 mil, and Flexen $3.87 mil. That's $36.67 mil for guys who were never in the organization. Then $18.6 for Diaz who never threw a pitch. And Eduardo Escobar and Mark Canha were traded a month before the deadline with almost all of their combined $24 mil salaries retained.
In 2024 they're still paying McCann $8 mil. Scherzer $30.8. Verlander $25. Now there's another dead $13 mil with Narvaez, Wendle, Lopez, Nido all being DFAd. And Brooks Raley had TJ. He's being paid $6.5 mil.
Kodai Senga was not lost for the 2024 season. He was lost until June and has had setbacks. He's currently throwing bullpens.
Yes, Yamamoto turned down BOTH NY teams because he was never saying yes to anyone except the Dodgers to play with Ohtani. Yankees offered the highest AAV, are the Yankees, and he told them no.
You think Jeff McNeil at $12.5 can't be moved? A former batting champ who can play 2B and both corner OF spots well? What?
How do you talk about how will the Mets replace the starters when Christian Scott has been flying up the prospect rankings, then made his debut where he made 5 starts before being sent back down? 3 Quality Starts, 27.2 IP, 25 Ks, 6 BBs, 1.08 WHIP. And Jose Butto who has a 3.08 ERA in 7 starts and 38 IP this season? Blade Tidwell is having success in AAA and there's a good chance he makes his debut this year. And then the SP FA class is incredibly deep. Burnes. Fried. Bieber. Buehler. Means. Flaherty. (Yes, Means and Bieber will be returning from surgery, but they are absolutely good pitchers people will be taking fliers on)
And what do you think the Mets should have done this past offseason? With all of this dead money they were already in a position where every dollar was being taxed at 100%. And the team had lots of holes. And the FA class was trash. There were some top names, Ohtani, Yamamoto, and then who? People said they should have signed Snell or Montgomery. Yeah, lots of teams wanted those two... and they have turned out great...
JD Martinez was signed for peanuts and will almost certainly be flipped. Severino will likely get a pretty decent piece from a contender. Marte has one more year at a high salary, but he is back to being productive. Hitting 286. 7 homers. 12/12 stolen bases. 126 OPS+. Retaining some money the Mets could get a prospect and further reduce payroll next year. Even Harrison Bader could very well bring in a piece back. His defense is still elite and he's currently got an above average OPS and he's been very clutch.
(And it's worth noting that Verlander's 2025 vesting option really doesn't look like it will vest. He needs 140 IP, he's at 57 as of 6/15, and he was scratched from his start today) OH AND ADDING RIGHT NOW THAT VERLANDER GOT SENT TO IL

I'm not sure what more the Mets could've done. They brought in Scherzer and Verlander. Signed top free agents and had some home grown talent. It worked out in 2022 with 101 wins. Then they just fell apart last year. I watched most of the games and it was awful. Starting with the Diaz injury and going from there. Then you had two 40 year old pitchers that were under preforming. They had to cut their loses. That type of payroll isn't sustainable no matter how rich you are. What were the Mets supposed to do? Add another 100 mil on top of that? Try to get Soto or Ohtani? It just wasn't going to work without some type of rebuild. Cohen tried. I don't know why people are mad at him for things not working out. You can look at the salary this year and say the Mets should be doing better with that payroll, but the tear down has already started. Next years salary will be around half of what it is now and the Mets will continue this soft rebuild process. Cohen will add big names when he needs to and I'm fine with that.

I think you answered your question. Your best pitchers should not be 40 years old getting paid $40 mil a year. They assumed Edwin Diaz would not revert to his old ways of blowing saves (which he did). It doesn't matter how much money you spend if you're overpaying on the wrong pieces hoping that, at some point, the contracts will pan out. Look at the Dodgers: overspend every year to win 1 shortened season championship. And the Giants won 3 championships with a small payroll. It's less about how much you spend and more about the quality of players.

Baty was the #2 3B prospect behind Henderson and top 10 on many lists. Those known problems had planned fixes and they partially haven't worked out. Baty is basically an established AAAA player. He was recently sent down again and immediately started raking. It's what he always does. I think his time is just about done. But thankfully Mark Vientos has taken a big step forward and in 84 ABs this year has 5 homers, an 897 OPS, a 161 OPS+ and has made huge strides defensively. (There's also Mauricio who would have been seeing time at 3B had he not torn his ACL during the winter and is missing the entire year.) Alvarez almost set the record for most homers by a rookie C last year. Probably would have if he played a full season. I think he finished 1 behind Bench. During development his defense was questioned, but Verlander and Scherzer raved about his pitch calling, his game prep, he ranked as one of the highest framers and was all around good defensively. His future looks bright.

Many teams have "highly touted" prospects that have a small level of success. i think the Mets front office needs to find that balance between prospects and big contracts. Now they are still suffering from the psychological effects of that amazing collapse and became weak panzy asses and still haven't recovered from the fact that the Braves are deep in their heads. And I'd like to also add that some of those Met players were on a "fluke" year like McNeil who came back down from his off-season home on Mars to show what a lousy hitter he really is. add that to the fact that Met owner Steve Cohen is an amateur owner who is not a very good judge of character.

This guy is not clutch and in his years with the Mets he hasn't been able to carry the team for 3 or more games. McNeil has to go even if we eat a lot of money. Everyone with a 1 year deal gone. Let's give the kids in the minors a chance to pitch here. We can go after Soto if we can't get him at a reasonable price we should go after after Christian Walker Give him a 2 year deal with an option this saves us at least 140M plus years that we would have to give Alonso.
    Stearns knows what to do.

    • @BKDBut
      @BKDBut 3 месяца назад

In 3/4 of full seasons he's knocked in 118+ runs, but he's not clutch? Wtf are you talking about?
Kids in the minors are already getting chances to pitch here. And obviously people like Quintana, Severino, Megill, Manaea, Houser, are stopgaps because somebody has to throw innings and also be backup as Scott, Butto, Tidwell, etc continue to develop
Walker should absolutely be option #2. And he is absolutely getting a better deal than what you just suggested.

As a die hard Mets fan, the Mets lacked a competent front office for years. Prior to Cohen the Wilpons nickle and dimed every season.
The Scherzer and Verlander trades were attempts to a win now but also save on the future by building the minors. Scherzer and Verlander are at the tail end of the careers.
In hindsight, they were bad signings. But at the end time it gave hope to the Mets faithful that the team was willing to invest in whatever it took to build a winning team and winning culture.
So yes it’s an expensive failure, but we know have the front office to make the right choices for not only today but for the future. I rather be the Mets than the Marlins, Whitesox,
