This sketch sums up my Catholic parents - so terrified of their own bodies, they won't even say the word out loud. I never got a "talk" - had to figure it out myself. All thanks to "family values" such as ignorance, fear and blind traditionalism.
HA HA... I know how you feel....We had a video about it in school...went home and told my parents...they grounded me for a week for talking about it...and wrote a letter to the school....
Reminds me of what Craig Ferguson (a good friend of these two geniuses, by the way) said about sex education in 70s Scotland. It would go like this: "Pay attention, everyone. This is Mr. and Mrs. Toad. They're married! They were married in a church, by a Protestant minister!" (He also said, "Actually it's a fucking miracle that the Scottish people didn't die out in the Middle Ages!") ;)
I cannot describe how brilliant I think this is. Its one of the greatest sketches I've ever seen. The kid does a great job and Fry and Laurie are so incredible...so many quotable lines that I'm not going to spoil. Just awesome.
The greatest example of what is happening today in American schools... coming from a British television program. Well played, BBC and Fry and Laurie, well played...
Carrie's mother also called breasts "naughty pillows" and she also thought she was dying when she had her first period (in a school shower) because of so called "sins". That's pretty much a lot similar.
"oh are you indeed, trying to teach him what? how to embarrass his parents, how to smack himself with heroin, what?"...one of the greatest quotes ever!!!!!!!! hugh laurie is a genius!!!
Somewhere I got the idea that Stephen was usually the comic and Hugh the straight man. Here we see quite clearly that Hugh got the laughs as often as not. What a couple of masters.
And this becomes suddenly relevant, in light of people trying to ban the dictionary, because - gasp! - a child managed to look up the definition of 'oral sex' in it...
This, together with their 'Shop' sketches (shoes, jewellery, greetings card, hardware, model etc), make up some of the best comedy slices in earth's history ;o)
I love HOUSE. It's a drama, but Hugh Laurie is doing comedy half the time. His timing, etc. You couldn't have just a straight actor playing his role. It's just a different character and type of comedy. It's hilarious when it's not scary, insane, and dramatic. Love Hugh Laurie and Stephen Fry and Ms. French.
I think Fry and Lauries style indeed influenced my Monty Python's Flying Circus, but not entirely. They have a flair, of an intellectual and sophisticated nature. Bravo!
I think he's referring to the differences between learning the facts of it vs. learning sometimes muddled euphemisms. I went to school with a girl whose mother wouldn't allow her to attend health classes and didn't teach her about about feminine development. She genuinely thought there was something horribly wrong when she began developing breasts (which her mother referred to as "naughty pillows" and "sin bags"). [more]
I LOVE How proper and defined and articulate the British language is. I am something like 59% British (scotch, welsh, and british, and then a quarter Polish, and some german). And I love hearing Brits speak. They're such masters of language imho. I didn't really see the humour in this one, though, except for when Fry was looking for a replaceent son in his desk drawers.
It's funny because Mr. Smear is a hyperbolic representation of people who actually exist and believe these things to some extent. For example, the idea that kids shouldn't be taught sex ed. These people are always right-wing (hence the reference to social welfare as something negative). This sketch simply exposes them for the idiots they are and even though it's old it's still relevant.
Blackadder basically follows the life of the main charactor called Blackadder, hence the title :) The first series is during the medieval times, the second during Elizabeth 1st, the third includes the Prince Regent, and the last is during the first world war. It stars Rowan Atkinson and is sooo hilarious!! I would definitely recommend it! :D
Love them!! As for people who are surprised over seeing Hugh Laurie as someone other than House..this is British television that made him famous in the first place..*quality* British television
When I started watching the first episode of house (I was 11 gimme a break) Me: Oh cool! Wooster playing a doctor! This is gonna be funny! :D After the episode.. Me: D:
"Without recourse to CANNABIS and GOVERNMENT HANDOUTS!"
Now that line got me good.
TheYopogo through my ears this turns to "without canabis gum and panda"
"Well, I don't actually call mySELF a school, no."
I laughed so hard at that one. Going to have to remember that. xD
Well it's been 10 years. Have you remembered this one? :D
"You're going to fight me now, are you?"
"Yes, I bloody well am! I'm not going to stand for this!"
"Well, do you mind if I do?"
Stephen Fry is remarkable. He has perfect lines like "well, do you mind if i do?" that he just throws away.
"i'm afraid we don't have any spare sons." haha this whole sketch is full of hilarious quotes
"im not going to stand for this", "do you mind if i do?" i fucking love it.
That's religion for you. Fuck 'em all I say.
Have you met very many Catholics...?
Jeez I cannot imagine what a difficult task you must have to figure out sex.
Oh man the hardship.
reclusivenigma Yeah, go and tell that to every teenage mom out there. I'm sure they'd looooooove to hear about how easy you've had it.
"if you're trying to trick me into sexy talk...!"
One of my favourite comedy bits of all time. I quote "welcome to the harsh realities of the marketplace" constantly
"Call yourself a school??"
"Well, I don't actually call MYSELF a school, but, um ..."
this sketch never gets old.
i love them both to bits.
It's amazing how timeless this is.
I can't believe such a renowned expert in the medical profession doesn't know where babies come from.
If Scottish people died out in the middle ages then Scotland wouldn't exist for that long as it only united towards the end of the medieval period
I cannot describe how brilliant I think this is. Its one of the greatest sketches I've ever seen. The kid does a great job and Fry and Laurie are so incredible...so many quotable lines that I'm not going to spoil. Just awesome.
"You want me to change your son?"
"Of course I do, mine is soiled"
...
"We have some locust in the biology lab"
ROTFL
It seems like it gets funnier every time I watch it. I'm glad they brought the show to Netflix
It's 2021 and I'm here watching this piece of evergreen comedy
frankly STAGGERED
+hexonatapeloop His face when he says that!
"How to smack himself with heroin, what?!"
I think that whilst Michael might not be Mr Smear's son he is Mrs Smear's. If you get what I mean.
"What good is a blasted syllabus out there?!"
"Out where?"
"Out THERE!"
"The Arkwright Road?"
I burst out laughing at : " warmish " : D:D:D:
This is so much more relevant today than at any time in history lmao
I think this might be my favourite sketch of all time!
trendy young ppl in their 60s :3
"I'm not gonna stand for this."
"Do you mind if I do?"
Didn't notice that one before.
This is my favourite Fry&Laurie bit!
"Call yourself a school?"
"Well I don't call MYSELF a school."
~ Best bit xD
the way Laurie says STAGGERED! is what makes me love this skit
"You want me to change your son?"
"Well of course I do! Mine is soiled now..."
Hugh sounds a lot like Michael Palin here.
***** blasphemy.
Hugh looks so young, I can't even. Almost didn't recognize, had to pause the video on his face three or four times.
"without recourse to cannabis and government handouts" - Oh that was precious 🤣🤣
Mr Casalinga translates to Mr housewife! One of those sick homosexual jokes you find mr fry likes to hide in plain sight.
He says 'the arkwright road'
I love Fry & Laurie!
'If you're trying to trick me into sexy talk...' heehee
Oh god this is hilarious. I had never watched any of these before, I don't think I'm gonna sleep tonight.
I love these two so much, they are hilarious.
Stephen Fry looks gorgeous here. God, this sketch is funny.
"Well, uh, they're married, and they've..bought their own cage.."
Haha, sheer brilliance. :)
''Some of it is sinking in....''
these guys...
And this becomes suddenly relevant, in light of people trying to ban the dictionary, because - gasp! - a child managed to look up the definition of 'oral sex' in it...
Better ban the internet they can do much more then read about it.
Isn't looking up 'rude' words pretty much what dictionaries are FOR up to the age of about 10? That's certainly all we used them for back then.
"trend young people in their sixties?"
i love this sketch lots.
This, together with their 'Shop' sketches (shoes, jewellery, greetings card, hardware, model etc), make up some of the best comedy slices in earth's history ;o)
I've just learnt that sex intercourse can often bring about pregnancy in the adult female.
*What's incredible is that this sketch has become reality today in our schools bacically !!!!!...*
Stephen Fry and Hugh Lau... Oh christ; I've left the iron on!
French.
I love both these two
"What do you mean at the moment?"
Hugh you're so adorable
''Yes! It's very hard for you to believe, isn't it? Very hard for you to believe!''
Hilarious.
"well I don't actually call myself a school"
"they've got their own cage"
This is essentially Ben Shapiro's reaction to WAP by Cardi B.
I wonder if they deliberately wrote this to be a subtle parody of creationists, or it's just coincidental.
I don't think it was as big of an issue in the 80's
It's fairly obvious, isn't it?
Given that they made TV episodes that straight forward attack Christian dogma, I don't think they meant it to be subtle.
OMG that was hilarious! not what i expect out of hugh but none the less hilarious! he has such a funny sense of humor. thanks for posting!!!
This is so funny. I never knew there was a show like this. Wow was I missing out
"Mine is soiled now!"
Pure Genius
Locust for a child, Hmmmmm
Which state in the U.S. does this sketch take place?
All the Christian ones
"what dyu mean 'at the moment'?"
"...ah. well, um-"
BEST moment loooollll 5:28
lol, Mr. Smear? Like, Pap?
I think Fry and Lauries style indeed influenced my Monty Python's Flying Circus, but not entirely. They have a flair, of an intellectual and sophisticated nature. Bravo!
That was great! I love Hugh Laurie. Ever since I first saw him on Blackadder.
Fell off my chair at "Well I don't actually call myself a school"
hahaha thats absolutely fantastic, thanks for uploading!
it makes me sad that lots of people only know good old Hugh for House...
There was a better quality upload of this sketch but i can't find it
My favorite sketch ❤❤
its a classic. nothing less
ah, love these guys...
hugh laurie is amazing in everything he does!
what the hell is going on with Stephen's hair
Using his amazing prophetic powers, Hugh has anticipated Sean Hannity by more than a decade!
Stephen Fry, I love you.
one of their best!
I think he's referring to the differences between learning the facts of it vs. learning sometimes muddled euphemisms. Was the daughter's name Carrie by any chance?
Actually, that's one of the most sensible youtube comments I've ever seen.
This either a perfect example of British humor( which I love) or a copy of "Monty Python" Both are great
I even remember the locust! And I saw this sketch, what, 17 years ago!
I LOVE How proper and defined and articulate the British language is. I am something like 59% British (scotch, welsh, and british, and then a quarter Polish, and some german). You have scotch in you blood!?

Trendy young people in their sixties. XD heehee XD
Hey, what's the show Blackadder about? Is it any good?
he says they will not embarres mrs. smear with fowl language at the dinner table, like its a game of clue! hilarious sketch theese guys rock!!
i thinks its amazing that they keep their faces straight and don't start laughing all the way through.
Este video es muy bueno!
That bit after "at the moment" was totally bril.
Cracking stuff!! I artistically adore Stephen Fry!
"Well I don't actually call myself a school"
I couldn't breath when he said that!
...and this is the man who eventually played the world's most infamous TV doctor.
Love them!! As for people who are surprised over seeing Hugh Laurie as someone other than House..this is British television that made him famous in the first place..*quality* British television
"call yourself a school" hahahahaha"
Well, I don't actually call MYSELF a school.
Well they're married and, they've bought their own cage.
Call yourself a school?
-Well I don't actually call myself a school, but yes...'
