So, by the time we'd seen the movie, we knew what was going to happen. *LMAO* Good times, good times. :)

I'm an older guy and I saw it in the theater when it came out - I was in third year university. I think I probably went back to see it another 6 or so times because I was so stunned by the storytelling, the visual effects and the music. With the single exception of Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey, this was the first sci-fi film that actually looked good and it blew a whole generation away.

@@chain_of_nothing There are a whole a lot of shots replaced or effects tweaked or added to existing scenes. Some major, some minor, several not listed. The extended scene of the Dewbacks and stormtroopers at the escape pod site, the Dewback outside the cantina, the exterior of Obi Wan’s hut, the matte painting of MOs Eisley seen from above, the alien with a beret in the cantina replaces what was essentially a werewolf, Greedo shoots, flying droids accompanying stormtroopers door to door, terrible CGI Jabba, the Millennium falcon escaping Mos Eisley. Praxis effects added to the explosions of Alderaan and the Death Star, the Rebel fleet rising from Yavin, the wide panning shot of the fleet approaching the Death Star, several battle scenes over the Death Star, even the Yavin temple exterior itself.

There were a few prior to Star Wars. the original Planet of the Apes, 2001: A Space Odyssey... maybe a few others(depending on how you define it). However, Star Wars DID completely change how movies were made/marketed. Aside from wanting movie related products(which weren't really a "hot" thing at the time) like toys, posters, t-shirts, etc.... he really wanted control of the sequels(assuming there would be any). Planet of the Apes shared a toy company producer with Star Trek, and the Super Hero comic book characters(both Marvel and DC). Mego, in case you didn't know... that made 8" fully posable "dolls/action figures" and playsets. Anyway, Lucas redefined HOW movies were made, by creating his own FX company(Industrial Light and Magic), Sound Studio(The THX process via Skywalker Sound), etc. And yes, I'm sure you're aware of these facts... just putting it out there for anyone who doesn't know.

I was ten years old and had no idea about this movie at all. My Dad took my older brother and I into the city to see it and although we’d done that many times it was the first time we’d ever queued to get into a cinema. There were lines down the street to get in. I couldn’t comprehend why.
As soon as that first space battle started and the Star Destroyer rumbled over our heads in a seemingly endless mass of metal with laser blasts flashing back and forth I was completely and utterly hooked.
No space battles or laser fights from any movie or tv show had ever been as action packed. It was a complete revolution and audiences just lapped it up.

Yes, I saw it in the cinema in 1977. They did a refresh adding some unneeded CGI in the 1990s (the “Special Edition”, which is the only way it’s available now, except for bootleg reconstructions like the “Despecialized Edition”, which is well worth watching if you can find it), but honestly almost none of the CGI is a noticeable improvement over the original effects.

The rotoscoping on the lightsabers looks markedly better in my opinion, but basically every other addition just cheapens the movies…and stuff like that “Han shot first” debate bug me. I grew up with the very last VHS version that wasn’t updated, and lemme tell you, there weren’t even two shots. Han blasted Greedo away before he could even react. Or the “no, I am your father” scene. In the original version he says “no Luke, I am your father.” The discrepancies come from the edited versions later on.

I'm a really old guy, and saw it in the theater in 1977 when I was a freshman in college. Having been an admirer or the television series Star Trek of the 1960's, there wasn't much else in the way of believable space fantasy for those of us growing up during the Gemini and Apollo programs unfolding before us on television. I must admit 2001, A Space Odyssey (released in 1968) was an exception.
So, you should put yourself in my shoes in 1977 when I had my shoes blown off my feet watching Star Wars in the theater. I was fortunate enough to have viewed it in a theater that had been recently upgraded with the "then" state of the art sound system, for the 1974 release of Earthquake. So, the sound system rocked and rolled throughout the John Williams score with lightsabers and TIE fighters screaming from one side of the screen to the other. I think the word is adrenaline.

There were two pivotal moments for me as a kid that changed the way I looked at movies forever. The first was watching Once Upon A Time in The West when I was twelve. On a dreary and rainy day during a holiday they took me to that movie. In hindsight (I've seen it over 15 times since then) I did not understand most of what happened, but I was blown away by the way the story was shown and how the music really was an integral part of telling the story.
The second time was only two years later when Star Wars came out. Especially the opening scene with the Star Cruiser gliding over the big screen, revealing its enormous size was something that I'd never seen before. And - to be honest - set a standard for me that has seldom been matched since.

I always wince a little when I hear people refer to a film being impressive "for way back then" or something similar, as if great-looking films were a new phenomenon. I watched an old Hitchcock thriller the other night which featured a shot of a passenger plane in flight...the camera moved in closer and closer until it went right up to and through a window, where the characters were sitting inside. This film was made in 1940, and the shot looked flawless. Great films have existed for a long time.

I’m so excited to see you’re reacting to Star Wars! Yay! I really enjoy your reactions and loved watching your reaction to A New Hope!
It was 1984, I was 6 years old, and my parents and family were having movie night. The adults had picked the Star Wars trilogy to watch, despite my cousins and I wanting to watch some cartoon movie (I don’t even remember now what one). One of my aunts had made popcorn, another had purchased soda and candy, my uncles had barbecued hamburgers and hot dogs. So we sat down with the drinks, snacks, and food. I remember my sister, cousins, and I were sitting on the floor in front of my uncle’s big screen tv when the opening music blasted on and caught our attention. And from that opening scene onward we didn’t say a word and we watched all three films that night! That was how I was introduced to Star Wars and it’s been a big part of my life and my family’s since then. (Including watching the Ewok and Droids cartoons on Saturday mornings and the made-for-tv Ewok films). While I didn’t get to see it in cinemas when it was first released, in the late 1990s the films we re-released to cinemas and that’s when I saw them. They’re awesome on the big cinema screens and sound system!! Then I went and saw the prequels when they came out. Even dragged my boyfriend at the time to see Episode 3 (I say dragged because he hadn’t seen Star Wars and considered it cliché to be a fan....although he left that film a fan and we spent the next several days watching the other films). When my niece turned 6, I introduced her to Star Wars just like many of my older cousins had done with their nephews, nieces, or kids. And I’ve taken her to the cinema to see all of the sequel films and anthology films. I even gave her my Star Wars toys from when I was a kid and my dad found a bunch that he bought from an estate sale. So she’s got lots of Star Wars stuff! And of course we watched the tv shows: Clone Wars, Rebels, Resistance, Mandalorian, Bad Batch, LEGO Star Wars films and series, and are looking forward to the upcoming films and shows! The only thing we haven’t done yet is go to Star Wars Celebration or to the Star Wars park in Disneyland/Disney World. Though that’s generally due to costs, not because we couldn’t make the time. But maybe some day. I mean, we still watch the live streams from Celebration!
I’m looking forward to seeing your reaction to the next film! So glad you enjoyed this film! Thanks for sharing your reaction!

I was really impressed how much you noticed the score & the sound effects & how important it is for the story itself. Lucas has said himself that sound is 50% of the experience of any movie & he for sure pushed that fact hard with SW & all it's installments. The music & the sound effects will only get more & even better from here, trust me! There is a chance you might even recognize at least one special piece of music from the next one, a certain Imperial March always attached to Vader. But even if you don't know it yet, once you hear it it stays for life! That's what SW does to you, in general... It stays for life!

I saw this film when first released. People were stunned by everything -- including something things that might surprise you. For example, the music (a full symphony orchestra) was stunning. A golden robot that speaks with a British accent stunned everyone. Darth Vader's breathing stunned everyone. And that was just the first five minutes of the film!

The thing with Star Wars is that there’s so much expanded media and lore heavy essential animated shows and side shows that Star Wars soon bulks up as a Franchise. Everything very much supports and references everything else. So the films are good in isolation. But then the expanded stuff really make you rewatch the films and tie the whole world together. References, call backs, characters expanded on, tie ins, there’s just so much packed into this universe that it’s impossible to really put an order on how you experience it. You just basically have to watch the films, watch the animations, rewatch the films, read the comics, rewatch the films, cram the spin off films in there, read some books. 😂 once you’re in you can’t get out

I saw this when I was 6 years old when it first came out. Waited in a very very long line at the Chinese Theater. It blew everyone away. No one had seen anything like this before, or heard anything like this before: the special effects, the sound effects and the music were off the charts!!! The entire world changed and we went from the drab 70s and this movie ushered in the 80s.

The actor who played obi-wan kenobi was Alec Guinness who was quite a major film star doing the 40s and 50s particularly in the UK. Some of his major movies include the Bridge on the River Kwai, The Ladykillers, The man in the white suit and Kind Hearts and coronets.

I'm an OG Star Wars fan, saw this in the theater at 10 years old.
What you're seeing is the Special Edition version, but yes the effects at the time were groundbreaking.
I also love how you appreciate the sound design. And John Williams brilliant score.
Looking forward to your Empire reaction!

You're watching the Special Edition, which includes some tweaks in special effects (e.g., like the rings around the explosions of Alderaan and the Death Star, and the CGI scene as they drive into Mos Eisley), but most of the original special effects are intact. As one who saw this movie in the cinema in 1977, I can attest that this movie blew people's minds and seriously raised the bar on special effects and in-universe realism in sci-fi and fantasy movies. Everything, from no opening credits, to throwing you right into the action from the start, to the great leaps in special effects, changed the way movies were made. Even showing space settings as dirty and disorderly was a new idea, as was the idea that a space story could be set in the distant past. It was a game changer.

Seeing the opening scene on an actual *BIG* screen when the movie first came out is still the most awe inspiring thing I have ever seen in a movie, and Darth Vader is still one of the best villains in film history.
They actually filmed the ending when Luke and Han got their medals first while R2-D2 and C-3PO were still new and shiny, and much of the music evokes such an emotional response in me that none of the later music (which I don't even remember or recognize) does.

I was six years old when this movie first came out. My father took me to see it and it instantly became my all time favorite movie, even to this day. My favorite scene is when Luke is at Obi-Wan's home and Obi-Wan is telling him about Luke's father, and the history of the Jedi, etc. Then of course there's the attack on the Death Star. There are so many quotable lines in this movie even if only because they're kinda cheesy. But it's surprising how many lines from just the attack on the Death Star you can fit into every day life.
You should see Rogue One, which is also excellent and leads immediately into this movie.

I was only 5 when this movie came out so I never got to see the original release in the theater, but I did see the 1981 re-release which was the first time "A New Hope" was added to the title. My dad took me to see The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi when they first came out. I saw all three films again in 1997 when they were re-released to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the original film.
