Great to relive some of these old 49er classics…..especially since this was the game in which they beat the Rams for the first time since ‘66, and also with the likes of the late Fred Dean, whom the 9er’s had recently acquired from San Diego, and the late Freddy Solomon and Dwight Clark. May they rest in peace.
Roger Staubach was a great QB but left a lot to be desired as a color commentator. And Fred Dean....man oh man, what a monster. Best pure pass rusher of all time. Completely took over near the end of the game.
The 49ers had unique characters one of whom was #14 kicker Ray Weirshing. He would never look at the goal post. Watch him starting at 14:30, he never looks up the entire time he's out there. He'd put his hand on the holder's(Montana)shoulder to lead him into position as if he were blind. How could you not love that.
yup, and this was the 49ers first victory against the Rams at Candlestick..and coming into this game Rams had an all time winning record of 41-19-2 against the 49ers...
The Rams were a solid team in the Pat Haden Vince Ferragamo Era, so it's understandable that the 49ers couldn't beat the Rams. The 49ers were going nowhere until Walsh finally relented and turned the organization over to Notre Dame Legend Joe Montana. Walsh was a system coach. Just give the team over to Montana and watch the Superbowl Rings pile up.
@ben ashworth Joe Montana was a at Legend Notre Dame. Walsh was a coattails Coach. A pretty good coattails Coach albeit. Walsh never had success before or after Montana.
The Rams' 96 yard touchdown dive towards the end of the first half was probably their most impressive drive of the season. Their problem was inconsistency -- particularly at quarterback.
Fred Dean and "Hacksaw" Reynolds put the SF D over the top. The loss of Dean crushed the Chargers & the Rams ( who had the highest winning percentage in all pro sports for a decade ) never really replaced Reynolds.
They say hindsight is 20/20, but looking back, you could say the Rams lost a couple players during this era who should have made them a better team. They should have kept Jaworski at quarterback, and Hacksaw Reynolds at linebacker. If they did, maybe they win Super Bowl XIV, and challenge for another NFC championship in 1980 and 1981. But we'll never know.
both organization traded places in 1981, as this season marked the Rams first in 8 years without a spot in the playoffs, and the 49ers first in 8 years with a playoff appearance.. ...
Yeah, when he famously said after the NFC Championship game that the 49ers were going to Paly Alto. Of course, that SB was actually a 49er home game, just in Stanford Stadium instead of Candlestick. More seating then.
That 9er secondary foursome would stick together and get better every year. Three years later (the '84 team that won the SB; some say the best 9er D of all time - not sure if better than '89 D but both were insanely dominating) all four, the whole secondary, would go to the Pro-Bowl.
@@bconni2 Yeah, finally giving them some credit. Don't know how old you are, but check the records to see how the 49ers pretty much dominated the Rams in the late 50s and early 60s, Ram fan!
That sign "Pat haden is on the Dean's list" that they showed after a sack was really funny. Part of why the fan made that sign is that this person knew that Pat haden is a Rhodes scholar.
@@zimmerman1031 You missed the point. Dean was traded in '81 for FUTURE early draft picks in '83, i.e. the 49ers pledge to give specific early round picks. Neither side of the negotiation table knows who's going to be acquired. They don't even know who will be in the draft in that future year. They only know that the 9ers will give their early draft picks and the other team will get early picks for hopefully-great players, at whatever positions they want/need for their team. Changing of the guard. Niners 3 & out offense sucked, their punt/kick coverage was terrible. Good enough for SB that year. Spoiled by Montana - Rice years and now Purdy offense...

Where the hell does the sound go for the 2nd half ??
Fred Dean was one hell of a football player.
Montana is a GOAT, but drafting Ronnie Lott and trading for Fred Dean were the difference makers for SF
