About the album:
Joe Satriani’s 16th studio album is What Happens Next, a high-energy album that takes the legendary guitarist’s skills to exciting new heights.
The new instrumental album features a power trio of Satriani on guitar along with two Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees: Deep Purple/Black Country Communion bassist Glenn Hughes and Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith, the latter reuniting with Satriani for the first time since their work in the supergroup Chickenfoot with former Van Halen vocalist and bassist Sammy Hagar and Michael Anthony. This unparalleled rock rhythm section gives What Happens Next a depth of groove that sets it apart from Satriani’s other work.
Satriani once again teams up with producer/engineer/mixer Mike Fraser on What Happens Next. Fraser has recorded and mixed every AC/DC album since 1990’s The Razors Edge and has been a frequent collaborator with Satriani since the release of Crystal Planet in 1998, producing, engineering or mixing Satriani’s solo albums as well as both studio projects by Chickenfoot.
This 12-track album showcases Satriani’s gift for constant evolution and reinvention as a bandleader and composer of intricate guitar-driven rock. What Happens Next finds Satriani discovering sounds and textures never before heard from an instrument he has unquestionably mastered over his three-decade solo career.

No other guitar player can make his guitar sing like Satch. Joe you're my favorite musician and you inspire me so much. You're a true Master. God bless you
Try Andy Timmons.

Amen
David Gilmour, Mark Knopfler, Steve Rothery, and Eric Clapton would challenge that statement.
This is what you call a "song". No shredding required. Memorable chorus; enough repetition but not too much. This is why Satch is the best.
he can shred too but he is a real musician. not a show-off...
After listening to this song for a few times, I finally get it. He's at the point in his career where he's nearly done it all, he has 15 Grammy nominations, he's taught legends like Steve Vai and Kirk Hammett, he went platinum, and he's been part of a super group (Chickenfoot), so he's thinking to himself, "What's next?" Where does he go from his already virtuoso, world-class master level? I think he's gonna go and simply make more and more music that comes from the heart, and he wants the music to be as pure as crystal.
@dbltrplx silly rabbit he already left and came back 4 times.. hes really been playing guitar for 4000 years straight and is a light god from the 7777th dimension
"pure as crystal"
as a crystal planet, perhaps...?
Nicely said! It seems to be mostly about songcraft for him now but then no one writes or plays like Joe so I'm fine with that!
Well said, my man! Right on.
What’s Next?! Well, you get the Funkmeister extraordinar on bass..THATS WHAT!!
Probably one of the best road songs in my library.
2:45 the dry sounding tube amp through this licks progression was kick ass, no big hall or mass verb just in your face guitar. J.S never disappoints.
This is so good my guitar moved herself closer to the monitors to enjoy it
HOW DO YOU KNOW IT'S A GIRL?
Sorry about the microagression there, I shouldn't have assumed my guitar"s gender =D
Guitars are beautiful, let it be a she :D @@Panterhead
@@Panterhead not a problem- be old school- but isnt the color of your guitar a sort of Trans Blue??
🤣🤣
The chorus immediately made me feel uplifted and happy the first time I listened to this song.
I found this while on shrooms last night, it was probably the most profound experience in my life
Thank you so much.
That understated lick at 3:46 is so good.
My thoughts exactly!
I just love Joe. Everything about him and his wonderful music. It's always got so much feeling and melody.
When you're about to write a new chapter in the book of life...
Satch...always providing a song for every mood.
This record touched my soul in ways that words can't really describe in a way that would translate to other people. Some records just come at a time in life when you need that little something that helps you get by, makes you feel good, or just makes you feel SOMETHING. I took a long road trip one day, by myself, after I got my hands on this CD, and just played it non-stop all the way there and back, and just breathed it all in. My ears are so blessed to have heard the notes that Joe chose on this record. Or, maybe the notes chose him. Either way, such a timeless piece of art, that takes me back, each time I hear it. I was also blessed enough to see Joe on the G3 tour, as he was supporting this album, and got to hear Cherry Blossoms and Thunder High On The Mountain live. Sadly, he's likely moved on from doing any of these songs live, to concentrate on newer material, but they will always resonate with me, and bring me back to that time in my life. The power of music !!!!!
I Like how the melody leaves a lot of space...and "breathes" with the rest of the music. Beautiful!
"Awesome" & Chad Smith on drums even, doesn't get much better than that !
Can't thank you enough for the DECADES of amazing music and inspiration. So looking forward to this album!!
DECADE could be a guitar tuning lol
Thanks for exist man!!!
Best song of the album, another masterpiece from the best. The word ¨legend¨ is not enough, pure talent and inspiration... God bless you, Joe.
what album is this

All Satriani's do is a jewel fo music.
I agree
What a wonderful groovy Sound, ... a cool loundge atmosphere infront the fireplace for this first listening ... oh it's so good ...thank you so much Mister Satriani 👏
It's even better when you're cruising down the road on a Harley. :)
I've been a true fan since I heard "Big Bad Moon" on the "Flying in a Blue Dream" album, rocked me right out! But this song reminds me... This man, his style... it's Legendary, in all his forms!! I (always) can't wait for his next album!!!
One of the coolest songs ever and that says a lot because most all of Satriani's songs are cool. Not to mention he's incredibly talented. Top 10 in my book.
Joe - you have wonderful soul to create songs full of feelings. Without it making such great songs is impossible. . . Greetings to all People with souls open for these beautiful sounds.

Zgadzam się. Joe jest niezwykły .Wciąż czymś zaskakuje.Pozdrawiam

Joe. I know you know you play what everybody wants to hear and beyond of which you're not afraid to unleash on the world any of your musical creations. I couldn't believe when I first heard Flying in a Blue Dream. Forever a fan and I always try when I can to blow peoples eardrums with your high fidelity shit. Thanks a lot Satchmo!!!!!
Joe has ascended. The composition, the transitions, the overall groove. Holy shit.
if old-time Satch fans are getting fed up with the way he composes and how his style of playing is 'ritual' (meaning, same tune, different expression), then I guess you have to make a decision - you either stop listening to Joe Satriani, or accept the way he plays.
I've been listening to Joe since Surfing With The Alien album, and still listening for 30 years now was a kid and I never get fed up with him. So do yourselves a favor and just enjoy his music.
The sector of the listening public that find fault in anything Mr Satriani plays can definitely shut the fuck up. I'm 46, started playing at 15 and in my opinion I think he's #1 in my book. When a guitarist can separate himself from the thousands of top shelf shredders with a distinct style, sound and unbelievable skill-set as well as song writing talent that speaks for itself, that musician is going to deliver the magic that He's grown and developed during His career. By the way, Satriani has the fourth most Grammy Award nominations, 15, enough said.
It has been a fantastic musical journey to me, may be not to others but every album he did really worth it. Definitely will still listen for his forthcoming albums, cheers!
Agreed.. 52 y.o. fan (since Surfing) here! ALL musicians evolve..if they played the same thing all the time, it would get stale.
You got it right Papa Rock. Got 'er right! Same with 1Tanker. I don't understand why some many people want to go back in time about 25 years. For what? Jeff Campitelli and Bissonet on drums make the same songs? We are lucky to have a current day Bach.
You had a good point until "Satriani has the fourth most Grammy Award nominations". Grammys dont mean shit when it comes to music. Its about sales and popularity. I assure you there is plenty of amazing instrumental music that is not recognized by Grammys simply because its not popular.
Where is this coming from?
29 y.o., not a guitarist myself but have been listening to instrumental masters for about 10 years now. Satch has been my favorite since day one. Sure, I absolutely adore Friedman & Petrucci, but Joe always has hit us with the widest variety of styles & techniques, actually. I can't even understand how you can get 'bored' specifically with this new album and the previous one being so *clean*.
He creates another classic!
😎🎸
DAMN That solo...
Since 1989.. I have listened. It just keeps getting better... Rock on Satch.
Always love that kinda groove mystical spirit in Joe's songs. Reminds me of "Made of tears". This is my favorite from the new album so far.
Absolutely. This is Made of Tears 2.0 (that's my favorite song, so I could hear the inspiration immediately). Love this.
INFJ
Yes, a bit of Made of Tears in there .
This song and "Super Funky Badass" is amazing. "Looper" is a great too. That whole trio of songs from Looper all the way to Super funky badass is the best.
Always wanted to see Joe (and Scorpions) in concert but my health prevents me from doing it. Its a number on my Bucket List that will never have a checkmark next to it. Thank you for your music Satch!
The Grand Master .... Long live Joe
Every day i wake up, and i need to listen to this song one or two times.
Monster of GUITAR!!!
More than that :)
Every song has been epic so far. Can't wait for the full album
Agreed
Jan 12th 2018. I'm waiting also.
kierman você tem toda a razão, perfeito
kierman have you heard the whole thing yet track 1 till the end I can't turn it off his guitar style and ability is unparalleled
Satch did it again. Great!
Kinda reminds me of " A door into summer". Awesome 🙃
Get your groove on! The latest Satch tune will have everybody hoppin'!!
This is by far my favorite so far! The vibe is just INCREDIBLE! So much feel, vibe, and groove all in one song!
Joe killed it wit dis one
1:28 What a lovely chorus
Its got that funk
solo from another planet guys
Flippin heck man, this Cat's got some growl going on his guitar. This elevates me to a great place everytime I hear this. I cant get over it its Awesome. Probably Satchs best work in years in my opinion.Love this album.
I'll probably NEVER get to meet Joe Satriani, but if could just get a simple reply from the MAN himself that would be as great or better than an autograph. Joe changed my life forever at the age of 13. After hearing surfing with the alien, I immediately put my violin away and knew what I wanted out of music. Every single note you play is pure magic. You get it all from this guy, hyper speed to a stand still and everything in between. GOD BLESS YOU JOE!
All I could get out when I met him 20
years ago was “ You’re a god , man!”
Love every single note of it! Thanx Joe!
Sara Dutra hi
this song takes my soul for a ride on smooth sailing audio of perfection.
Satriani at his very best. One of the greatest musicians ever.
YEEEEAAAAH
w/ the masters of rock music..glenn hughes & chad smith, a real power trio!
Ageless!!!!! Your songs are allways the canvas for a great movie!!!!
Joe is a Music machine
Man, the groove on this drips like maple syrup off a round stack of IHOP banana walnuts.
Joe if you read this, please come back to Belfast or Dublin!!!
summerboyfun yeess lad
Yesss!
his sound is inner fire. dizzying quiet powerful drug. but i want to feeling this energy now. but i am feeling it now.
This is Joe's best album since Crystal Planet
OMG, this is a classic Satch song. Love it Joe, Love you Joe 30 years of fine music. Thank you for sharing your gift.
Wow!!!!!!!
Can't wait! \m/
Too cool , gave me chills ,you go Joe !
That was awesome.
*Joe Knows Great Tonez.*
sweet and melodious like the " cherry blossom"
Love it! Same with Headrush!
I loved the intro
Why would you want this guy to sound like he sounded in the 90´s , this is so much better.
Luis Carlos Alvarez Rebaza now chance the extremist was amazing I feel he sounds predictable the last few albums . But that’s my opinion he’s a guitar god by all means him and skolnick are my favourites
The extremist is great I know, but this was kind of resfreshing for me, no more facemelting solos all the time just music.
He played it for the firt time live at Montreal the 25 th MAY. It was the cosmic!!!!
Pure heaven.
Best song of this album so far, hope he kept the best for the end
made me dance in my mind
yes, yes, yeeeeees
Just awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwesooooome 😍
Magical intro! Beautiful 2nd Solo with a "lost" outro! Groovy tone!
Gotta love it
I can tell you what happens next ? Joe will come up with a new master piece that will blow minds from here to light years away !!! Lol . Thanks sir Joe u da Man.
They said guitar players would come up and take Satriani's place.. .
They never did.
Vai got pretty close
Awesome Song.... Can't wait for the Album....
This is the one I've been waiting for. Love it
can't wait to see him in my town in july!
fav song from this album n second thunder high on the mountain..
WOW!!!! Awesome!!!
It's very impressive how Joe can make so simple melodies sounds awesome !!! I Think the lovely harmony makes total diference. How about you guys ?
Its not simply his playing. The song structure adds alot and the rhythm section is actually there.
EXACTLY, but people will probably whine about it anyway, maybe because what they can think of is whining all the time.
Spot on! Exactly my thoughts on Joe' s playing. He can play in technically challenging style, without sounding "technical" like some other players.
That's what sets apart a genius from the average Joe... (no pun intended). I guess that's the "holy grail state" that every guitarist should strive to achieve - to be able to make the listener feel what you feel even if the listener is not a guitar aficionado and in some rare cases, make someone take up guitar playing (rather through music than through looking cool and stage presence, preferably).
He does it with TONE
master master master
Epic.
Grande Satch...Great Feel Great Tone Great Song!
Cool stuff, I think he was born with a guitar in his hands
Yeah! Mine too!
WHAT HAPPENS NEXT GET GRAZYYYY
This song is the bees knees!
This one is going to be one of his top songs!!
hope to see u performing those crazy notes live, big up the Alien Joe
I was waiting for this. I'm definitely pleased
Hail to the Guitar God.......
The best guitarist of the world! 💪 Rock N' Roll forever!

Been a while since I heard Satch's music. Still a fan cause he still rocks!
Master of the masters of the masters.
