      Why did you decide to go with leer over other brands/alternatives

  • @hombre4103
    @hombre4103 Год назад +2

    Aside from the factory provided hold-down clamps, which, as you state, allows some shiting of the canopy, drill the bottom canopy rail and the top of the bed rail/top edge of the bed rail, 5/16" holes (2 or 3 on each side), then install 5/16" bolts, with 5/16" fender washer on the top of the fiberglass bottom flat of the canopy and also a 5/16" flat washer in the bottom side of the truck bed rail. This will anchor the canopy and not allow it to slide or move. I've done this procedure with extra bolting down of canopies before and it works well.

    I run the Leer 100xr as well on a 8' bed and had to drill through the bed rails to bolt it on. 5 bolts on each side with 2" fender washers to spread the tension. Super sharp truck, bud, very nice job!

    I bought my 2013 Tacoma in October, it came with a SnugTop Super sport canopy. I was debating on selling it at first, but it has served me so much purpose. I love it. However, the configuration the original owner went with was just the small fold out window. I wish mine had windoors or sliding windows. I’d said keep checking out the forums. I believe Amazon has a canopy mounting kit that’s worth looking into.

  • @jerryjoseph9135

    I did two things that I think helped with the shifting. (1) I put a nylon nut on the bolt and snugged it against the aluminum block. This stops the bolt from being able to back out. (2) I put modified unistrut bolts and nuts on each side to lock the aluminum block in place. A better solution is to cut a hole through the channel and drive a bolt right through but I didn't want to do that. I saw one person on youtube actually had the canopy supplier drill a hole through the canopy ledge and into the Tacoma rail and bolt that way. I think they got them to do it so that the warranty still applied.

    My thoughts about your sliding shell is you can mount a cargo rail on the front of the bed and put two more mounting points there or for a cheaper fix, lift the shell and put a few pieces of skateboard grip tape on the top of the bed rails and bottom of the shell. They should lock it in place. Just my 2 cents though.

    Someone may have already suggested this and/or you already came up with a solution but anyways, can you use a big enough T nut I think is what it is called in the OEM rails on each side of the Leer hardware used to "bolt" it in place and then some kind of homemade spacer that will hug the Leer nut that's in the bed rail but allow a bolt to go through it and screw into the T nut which should stop the Leer mounting hardware from sliding front to back even if the Leer hardware came loose?

    • @ftroutdoors1532
      @ftroutdoors1532  2 года назад +1

    • @Ultrarunnerdan

      @@Ultrarunnerdan yeah i mean the LEER tent weighs over 100 lbs and it has a weight limit of 600lbs. I think the dynamic weight limit is 250 but the static weight limit isnt really listed anywhere. You'd have to assume its over 700 if LEER makes tents to top their canopies. AS far as those mounting bolts go... you can go buy some galvanized pipe with a diameter just big enough for the screws to fit through. Cut the pipe in lengths equal to the ideal distance between the top of the clamp and the shell. Then use flat, and lock washers and torque it down real good and it should stay put.
