  • In this episode of Bangkok Chili Peppers TV, Hodà (@dad_hoda) will give you several tips to visit Ålesund, located in Møre og Romsdal and gateway for the Sunnmøre Alps. Furthermore he will show you some of the best scenic routes of Norway, the Atlantic Ocean Road and the Geiranger - Trollstigen. Read www.visitnorway.com to get always the most updated info about Norway.
    -------------------------------------------------------How to move---------------------------------------------------------
Rent a car from the Ålesund airport, I found that SIXT was the best provider. I paid around 100 euro per day for a Toyota Corolla full insurance included. To visit the city centre you can park in the Aksla parking, there is also plenty of parking space in on the street in that area.
    -------------------------------------------------------What to do------------------------------------------------------------
    1) Explore Ålesund
    - Visit the Fjellstua viewpoint. It s an easy and relaxing walk from the Aksla parking, 418 steps, this is also a nice area for hiking. Aksla is the mountain of Ålesund. It is not very high, around 180 metres but offers a spectacular view over the city from three different platforms: the Byrampen, the Fjellstua restaurant and the Aksla viewpoint.
    - Explore the beautiful city centre in Art Nouveau. If you want to know the story of the city, visit the Jugendstil Museum
    - Visit the Cruise Pier and drink an excellent beer in the Molo Brew pub
    - Take a nice walk over the Notenesgata and Skansegata streets
    2) Drive over the Atlantic Ocean Road, an 8.3 km section of County Road 64. The route was originally planned to be a railway but then turned into a normal road. The design started in the 1970s, the construction in 1983 and it was opened in 1989. This road is considered to be one of the most dangerous in the World because the weather on this zone is harsh and unpredictable. When strong windstorms happen, the ocean waves start invading the road and driving becomes very difficult.
    3) Drive over the Geiranger - Trollstigen. A very beautiful section is Trollstigen (Road 63), a serpentine mountain road and pass. The road twists through 11 hairpin bends as it climbs up to Stigrøra (858 metres above sea level) crossing the Stigfossen waterfall. This engineering masterpiece was opened on 1936, by King Haakon VII after eight years of construction.Trollstigen opens normally in May, and it closes in late Autumn, depending on the weather and driving conditions. A must stop is the Trollstigen viewpoint.

    4) Visit the Geirangerfjord, considered as one of the most beautiful in the Word and part of the UNESCO word heritage list

Thank you for your insight into Alesund. Do you mind saying which month you visit. We are hoping to visit Stranda in December over the Christmas for skiing.

For the ferry, did you have to prebook or is a slot for the car readily available on arrival?

Depends how much money you earn 😀 In General Norway is one of the most expensive countries.
