Bible Prophecy # 9 The Job Description of the Messiah--Has Anyone Ever Done Any of This? Pt 2

  • The title to this post is not cynical....it is meant to be quite straight forward and direct? Christian and Muslims believe Jesus is THE Messiah of the royal line of king David. The majority of Jews believe this Messiah is still to come.
Did you realize there are ONLY ten passages in the Hebrew Bible that predict his arrival and what he is supposed to do.
Here is the second of two slide illustrated YT lectures in which I thoroughly go through all TEN of these texts. Most think there are dozens of such prophecies, but only these mention the Messiah of the line of king David--and one of them might be in doubt.

Hi, James. When you click your playlist ( 2:50 ), there is a "sort" button at the top of it. That is a creator button. Viewers don't have it. If you click that button and select oldest first, it will put the videos in the proper order for us to watch, otherwise the autoplay feature gets it backwards, and we have to click each video from the bottom up. It's kind of annoying. If you could fix that, it would be much appreciated. Thanks 😉

Dr. Tabor, I love these informative videos! I have been studying Messianic prophecies for many years. In my amateur opinion, there are more prophecies about the Anointed One that weren't included in this series as prophecies of the Messiah/s:
    Zech 4.14
    Isa 65.9
    Ezekiel 34.23-24
    Ezekiel 37.22, 24-26
    Ezekiel 44.3, 7, 8, 16, 17, 21, 23-25
    Ezekiel 48.21-22
    Daniel 7.13-14
    Daniel 9.25-26
    Daniel 11.22
    Hoses 1.11
    Hosea 3.5
    Haggai 2.23
I am especially interested in your opinion on who Ezekiel was prophesying about in the above mentioned verses but I realize this may be the wrong setting to seek your input. Thanks for all you do to help us learn more!

David’s father Jesse is a Bethlehemite!
Mica 5:2 But you, O Bethlehem of Ephrathah, who are one of the little clans of Judah, from you shall come forth for me one who is to rule in Israel, whose origin is from of old, from ancient days.
1 Samuel 16:1 Jehovah eventually said to Samuel: “How long will you mourn for Saul now that I have rejected him from ruling as king over Israel? Fill your horn with oil and go. I will send you to Jesʹse the Bethʹle·hem·ite, because I have selected from among his sons a king for myself.”
John 7:42 Does the scripture not say that the Christ is coming from the offspring of David and from Bethʹle·hem, the village where David was?”
Genesis 35:19 So Rachel died and was buried on the way to Ephʹrath, that is, Bethʹle·hem.
Luke 2:4 Of course, Joseph also went up from Galʹi·lee, from the city of Nazʹa·reth, into Ju·deʹa, to David’s city, which is called Bethʹle·hem, because of his being a member of the house and family of David.
Matthew 2:6 ‘And you, O Bethʹle·hem of the land of Judah, are by no means the most insignificant city among the governors of Judah, for out of you will come a governing one, who will shepherd my people Israel.’”

I find it quite interesting how the author of the Gospel of Matthew not only gets it wrong once but twice in the same chapter. His attempt to connect the prophecies with towns is a failure. It’s almost as if he doesn’t under the language fully. He’s simply writing a story trying to put prophecy into the story but not fully understanding that they don’t mean what the prophecies are actually saying. Not only does he get those wrong but Herod died in 1-4BC, which contradicts Luke’s account of the birth of Jesus. Matthew’s events of the birth of Jesus sound more like a hero-god story of a special birth, persecution, spiritual awakening, miraculous deeds, betrayal, death and ascension to deity status. So none of this should be taken to make historical sense at all.

      The Scapegoat!
      Matthew 27:15-26
Jesus Barabbas, the scapegoat, is released living, and Jesus the Messiah, the immolated goat, is put to death. Scapegoat was the name given to the goat that “escaped” into the wilderness, never to return, with the blood, or sins, of the people on him. The scapegoat symbolized that through the Atonement all of Israel's sins could be forgiven, never to return.
Barabbas (which means son of the father in Aramaic) who was guilty (burdened with sin) was released while Jesus (also the Son of the Father) who was innocent of Sin was presented by the High Priest and was sacrificed by the Romans through crucifixion.
Matthew 27:16 At that time they had a well-known prisoner whose name was Jesus Barabbas. 17 So when the crowd had gathered, Pilate asked them, “Which one do you want me to release to you: Jesus Barabbas, or Jesus who is called the Messiah?”

Jesus is the Lamb of The God of Abraham YHVH Yehovah Jehovah
      Mark 16:8
      In the Gospel of Mark.
If the women tell no one then, Who is !
What each Gospel story is about.
      The four living creatures!
      Matthew Who was!
      Mark Who is!
      Luke Who is Coming!
      John The Lamb of YHVH!
The four gospels are associated with the four living creatures: Matthew, the man, Mark the lion, Luke the ox, and John the eagle. John has Jesus dying on a different day. It's the Day of Preparation, not the Day of Preparation for Passover. It was the day they prepared the lambs for sacrifice. While at the same time, Jesus is prepared for sacrifice. Jesus is the Lamb of YHVH Yehovah Jehovah
a man, a lion, an ox and an eagle. The man symbolises the prophet; the lion, kingship; the ox, priesthood, and the eagle, fatherhood.

I actually disagree that Isaiah 9:6 is messianic because everything that is described in verse 10 happened in the reign of Hezekiah but Isaiah 11 is definitely messianic because none of that has happened yet I think a good reason to link Isaiah 9:6 to Hezekiah is because his name literately mean god strengthen or god mighty

i have another way to understand the micha prophesy , i do believe it is referring to the physicals place, the reason is that it specify Bethlehem of ephrathah, wich is the one in judah there is another one called Bethlehem of Zebulun wich is closer to Galilee this is the reason why the text is specific , so it opens refering to a phisical place . according to 1 Samuel 16 the family of king david was living in Bethlehem of ephrathah even tho he is not a descendant of hur he is from perez we can say he was just living with the clan, this verse is talking about king david who came from Bethlehem and the clan , and from him the king will descend , is not that every king has to be born in Bethlehem , is just a reference to king david.

The fact that it does not and is not required to be somebody of direct blood lineage of any specific line, is exactly the point of under the order of Melchizedek and what that means.

And for your final question, has anyone fulfilled any of those things, yes, Yeshua bar Joseph achieved the very first one in spades, Not only was he reviled by the Sadducees and Pharisees who conspired to murder him. And as much as you imply that his body was stolen, it was being watched over. He was crucified on Wednesday April 5th of 30 AD, I believe. Because he had to be put in before the high holy day which was Thursday of that week. That put him in the grave for three full days and three full nights as would have been proper to rise on the morn after the second holy day of that week. Just because he didn't proceed to fulfill all 10 of these things is not for us to decide or judge. He did say he would return to finish the job. It is not up to man to tell God what his itinerary should be!

Not every finger is a thumb, we all have diferent atributes and talents to offer, a leader, or a director is useless, if they have no lead or direct back to the true straight path that humanity should be walking.

Faction fighting and the persecution of people who belonged to any one of the other religious factions of the time seems to have been endemic.

Dr. Tabor, concerning your statements regarding Zechariah 9: 9-10, you are incorrectly applying your culturally derived conceptions of riding a donkey as conveying humility. There is no evidence that this is how riding a donkey would have been perceived. In fact, I don't think the passage conveys that it is the act of riding the donkey that is the sign of humility. The Messiah is humble AND rides a donkey. It's a juxtaposition of humility and nobility. In the Ancient Near East donkeys were used to 'carry' Kings and the idols of deities. There was a long tradition of this, going back to at least Lagash II. So, it was a bit disappointing to witness as you ignored the historical perceptions of the donkey as a vehicle for kings and deities (this is academically well attested, too) to instead assert baselessly that donkey riding was seen as an act of humility.

I, the king, am the Land's most excellent fighter against the enemy. I, Šulgi, am respected for my immense bodily strength. I am mighty; nothing resists me; I know no setbacks. My barges on the river do not sink under me; my teams of asses do not collapse under me.
Or these consecutive Neo-Babylonian lexical list entries:
      r ii' 19' anše diŋir-ra = i-mir i-lu |donkey for a god
      r ii' 20' anše lugal = i-mir šar-ri |donkey for a king
Do these sound like displays of humility to you?

Please provide citations from the Semitic speaking world for the ubiquity of this implication you suppose. I have given explicit lexical attestations. You have put forth nothing to back up that belief, so sorry, no.

      @@Ken_Scaletta Here's more.
      From "Ninurta's Exploits":
The hero, the son, pride of his father, the very wise, rising from profound deliberation, Ninurta, the lord, the son of Enlil, gifted with broad wisdom, the …… god, the lord stretched his leg to mount the donkey, and joined the battalions ……. He spread over the mountains his great long ……, he caused …… to go out among its people like the ……. He reached ……. He went into the rebel lands in the vanguard of the battle."
A deity, Ninurta (with which people would likely have been familiar throughout all of second temple Judaism, just as we are familiar with Zeus), literally rides a donkey.
Here again, from "Išme-Dagan and Enlil's chariot":
"His great festival having been performed perfectly, Enlil stepped onto the chariot and embraced Mother Ninlil, his spouse. He was followed by Ninurta, his mighty hero, and by the Anuna who are with Enlil. The chariot shimmers like lightning, its rumbling noise is sweet. His donkeys are harnessed to the yoke. Enlil came out on his august votive (?) chariot radiantly. Ninurta, the support of his father, made the way pleasant. Having reached the place which gladdens the soul, where the seed is blessed, Enlil stepped down from his holy …… and established a feast."
I don't think you can find more examples than I've provided where the act of riding a donkey in the Semitic traditions is explicitly referred to as an act of humility. I would wish you good luck on the task, but I'd hate to give you hope.

The destruction of the Temple was foretold be the Daniel!
      Matthew 24:15
the disgusting thing that causes desolation: Daniel foretold that “disgusting thing(s)” would be associated with desolation. (Da 9:27; 11:31; 12:11) Jesus here indicates that “the disgusting thing that causes desolation” had not yet appeared; it was to come in the future. And 33 years after Jesus’ death, Christians witnessed the initial fulfillment of this prophecy when they did catch sight of a disgusting thing standing in a holy place. The parallel account at Lu 21:20 reads: “When you see Jerusalem surrounded by encamped armies, then know that the desolating of her has drawn near.” In 66 C.E., pagan Roman armies surrounded “the holy city,” Jerusalem, a place that the Jews viewed as holy and that was the center of the Jewish revolt against Rome. (Mt 4:5; 27:53) Discerning Christians, who recognized that the Roman army with its idolatrous banners was “the disgusting thing,” took it as the final signal to “begin fleeing to the mountains.” (Mt 24:15, 16; Lu 19:43, 44; 21:20-22) After the Christians fled, the Romans desolated both the city and the nation. Jerusalem was destroyed in the year 70 AD., and the last Jewish stronghold, Masada, fell to the Romans in 73 AD. (Compare Da 9:25-27.) The detailed initial fulfillment of this prophecy provides a solid basis for trusting that the greater fulfillment will also take place, culminating with Jesus’ “coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.” (Mt 24:30) Many ignore Jesus’ statement that Daniel’s prophecy would be fulfilled after Jesus’ day, and they follow Jewish tradition in applying Daniel’s prophecy to an event in 168 B.C.E. when Syrian King Antiochus IV (Epiphanes) profaned Jehovah’s temple in Jerusalem. Antiochus attempted to stamp out the worship of Jehovah, even building an altar over the great altar of Jehovah and sacrificing pigs as an offering to the pagan god Zeus of Olympus. (See study note on Joh 10:22.) The apocryphal book of 1 Maccabees (1:54) uses an expression similar to the one found in the book of Daniel (associating disgusting things with desolation) and applies it to the event in 168 B.C.E. However, Jewish tradition and the account in 1 Maccabees are human interpretations, not inspired revelations. Certainly, Antiochus provoked feelings of disgust by desecrating the temple, but his attack did not result in the desolation of Jerusalem, the temple, or the Jewish nation.

The Gospels was written after Jerusalem was destroyed. The Apostles were writing letters to the congregations before the Gospels was written. Because after the destruction of the Temple in 70 AD. The Jewish practice of animal sacrifices ended when the Romans destroyed the temple in Jerusalem. With the temple gone, there is no longer a place for the sacrifices to be offered according to the Mosaic Law. Did they make the Gospels up because they had no temple no more. No they didn't. The Gospels are proof of Jesus. The need for animal sacrifices no longer existed, for Christ had fulfilled the righteous requirements of the Law (Matthew 5:17). Animal sacrifices were merely a type of the perfect Sacrifice-the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world (John 1:29). The sacrifice of Christ paid the debt of sin for all mankind, both Jew and Gentile (Romans 1:16; Hebrews 9:12-15).
John was an eyewitness to Jesus and the destruction of Jerusalem and he received Revelation for the congregations of Christ!
      The First of John
1 That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have observed and our hands have felt, concerning the word of life, 2 (yes, the life was made manifest, and we have seen and are bearing witness and reporting to you the everlasting life that was with the Father and was made manifest to us), 3 that which we have seen and heard we are reporting also to you, so that you too may have fellowship with us. And this fellowship of ours is with the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ. 4 And we are writing these things so that our joy may be complete.

@@PazPinhasRahamim9220 I think I know where you are trying to go with this, so let me just copy for you the Islamic explanation for it, as follows:
"This matter has been explained in the following Hadith:
Mughira ibn Shu’ba reported: When I came to Najran, they (the Christians of Najran) asked me: You read" O sister of Harun" (i. e. Maryam) in the Qur'an, whereas Moses was born much before Jesus. When I came back to Allah's Messenger, peace and blessings be upon him, I asked him about that, whereupon he said: The (people of the old age) used to give names (to their persons) after the names of Apostles and pious persons who had gone before them.
      - Sahih Muslim 2135
Ibn Kathir (d.1373) also commented on this in his Quranic exegesis (tafsir), recalling the Arab tradition of addressing a person as the brother or sister of their notable ancestor:
“This is similar to the saying, `O brother of Tamim,' to one who is from the Tamimi tribe, and `O brother of Mudar,' to one who is from the Mudari tribe.”
      - Tafsir Ibn Kathir 19: 28
