  • From the Waldbühne Berlin 1997 "St. Petersburg Night":
Excerpt of the Berliner Philharmoniker with Daniel Barenboim, under the baton of Zubin Mehta, performing the Piano Concerto No. 1 by Pjotr Iljitsch Tschaikowski.
Tchaikovsky originally wanted to dedicate the piano concerto to his friend and mentor Nikolai Rubinstein, to whom he owed a great deal, as he had not only given him a musical education, but also provided Tchaikovsky with lodging for several years. When he played it to Rubinstein at the piano, he just expressed excessive criticism.
Tchaikovsky did not change a note in the concerto, but sent it to the pianist and conductor Hans von Bülow with the request that he form an opinion. Bülow found nothing wrong with the concerto. Rubinstein, who later had changed his mind about the work and played it in Paris in 1878, helped to achieve true success.

27년 전의 D. 바렌보임의 피아노에 주빈 메타의 지휘... 이보다 좋을 수가.
