I like the fact that its always been a natural cycle in Football for Greats to retire or lose their prime form and the public being disappointed at the lower quality of the new era. It's always going to be hard for people to accept that they will never see a footballer like Ronaldo, Messi, Cruyff or Beckenbauer ever again
With Messi though, it is gonna be impossible for a player to win 8 Ballon D'ors if that's the case then the level of football will have gone down drastically

It was told a few years ago that Pelé would’ve won 7 Balon D’ors if he was eligible, for Maradona (personal opinion) I’m pretty sure he only would’ve won 2, ofc u might disagree
