Bought one a week ago.....fantastic bike. Not as intimidating, bulk/weight/feet down as the BMW GS/KTM/Triumph Explorer. So easy to ride. And loads of lovely torque...I recommend a test ride. (Ex-Yam TDM900 owner).
I had the same opinion when test riding that bike. I liked it allot! Extremely comfortable, very easy to handle, very light, exceptional bike! One of the best bikes I've ridden! If I was looking for a dual sport bike right now, it would be this one!
I need to bookmark this video. I own this bike and I love it. It’s has been great and has taken me on many local adv trips, to AK and back and across the country. But, like many I get caught up in my the hype of the latest greatest and I have doubt about my vstrom. This video captures everything that I love about my bike and a little reminder every now and than certainly helps. Everybody bags on this bike as not a true adventure bike, I totally disagree. I’ve ridden gravel, stream crossings, atv trails, and a shit load of pavement and it has been mostly flawless in all areas. Go Suzuki!
I'm curious if you did those off roading adventures on the 1000 or the 1000XT. I'm looking at this model for my next upgrade and hence wanted to know. I'm looking at doing very light off roading so was curious if I needed to go for the XT or not.
In 2014 they had the adventure and the base model. Basically the same bike but the Adv had panniers and a different wind screen. The XT was not available then. Having the newer XT would be very nice to get the spoked wheels but I’ve either been very lucky to not destroy my alloy rims.
Great job COTW. This is a real world review and was influential in my recent decision to buy a used 2018 V-Strom 1000, which I am loving! You talk about what’s important, in an entertaining style. Keep up the good work!!
Nice review. Once again giving us your real gut level impressions, which is nice to have to contrast with all of the canned reviews you get in magazines.
Another great review Cager! I used to own a 2008 model and loved it, had a few bikes since, yesterday I bought a 2016 vstrom 1000, I view it as a great all rounder with some character thrown in. I wanted a bike that can be comfortable over rough roads, had decent power and is fun to ride slow or fast, the vstrom ticks a LOT of boxes! 👍
I follow news about motorcycles for more than two years now, I heave read dozens of various articles mentoning this bike and that's the first time I've heard (+read title again) Strom instead of Storm. I belive my brain has some kind of autocorrection :) Good job CoTW!
Whaou ! Your video gives me chills when you checked the enormous torque of this V liter engine. I own the old 2007 V-Strom 650 ABS and the mirrors are the same. Ok, compared to the ones like MT-09 for example they're ugly. But at least I can see something in them, not so sure for the MT.
Ok, for those who don't know the meaning of DL V-Strom, i'm going to explain. "D" was from DR 750 Big, the first trail model from Suzuki (that's why it has that peak too, they've wanted to re-create the old and charismatic image); "L" was from the TL 1000S/R model, they took the TL engine and put it on the first DL 1000. "V" it's easy... v-engine, and "STROM", in german, means "current" or "flow", and the idea was consistent with the current consumer preference.
Best Review "Flat Torque My Ass!" I just got the new Suzuki model catalogue, that should be in there, lol. Picking up my first Suzuki next month, a new Gsxs 1000f ABS in blue.
strom in german: electricity. and here we call it the "stark-strom". the translation ist: high-voltage and we call the dl650 the "schwach-strom" = low-voltage ;)
Excellent job! I just rode this bike, same color and all, yesterday. I agree with all you said and had the same reactions to the acceleration, handling and comfort and the oddness of the looks/styling. I have ridden all the competitors you mentioned as well as KTM's big adventure bike.....the Vstrom is by far the most comfortable and fun to ride. (The KTM's motor though, is crazy! Much more expensive though.) Thanks for a great job!
Great review. Please please please can you do a review of the Triumph Tiger 800 - does not matter which version. Would love your impressions of that sweet motor, best of both worlds, sitting (obviously!) between a twin and 4 pot. Muito obrigado e saude!
Great review! The sound of the V twin is worth buying the bike for alone! I am a prospective buyer. What Suzuki need to look at is the cost of the luggage! £725 panniers, £475 Top Box?
The clutch issue is not weird at all my friend. If you had done any advanced rider training, you would have been taught to ALWAYS start either a bike or car with the clutch depressed. It's an added safety feature to prevent you jerking forward if you were in a false neutral. Look at the Institute of Advanced Motorists - I'm sure you would gain massively from advanced training. I certainly did !!
I thought Strom means "power"..... so "POWER V" .... google translate= Translations of Strom noun current Strom, Strömung power Power, Macht, Leistung, Kraft, Strom, Energie stream Strom, Bach, Strömung, Zustrom, Guss, Leistungsgruppe
Hey man! Awesome videos! I am a long time fan, I've watched all your vids. Just one comment, I think that you sometimes run too fast :D For example at around 8:56 i was fearing in case some car pops out from your right or something :P Always safety first!! Keep up the good vids, I'm big fan!
hey what is your opinion i have now a mt 09 and want to go on a 2 zylinder back and look over fpr a 1000 vstrom or a 1050 ktm which is for more agressive driving
Hey, are you riding in Sintra? I think I recognize that from my Holiday in Portugal a month ago. I was thinking to myself: "Man, I wish I was on a bike right now..." :P
Sorry I did not see this review earlier .I am just about to buy my next bike after my Honda CB500X and it is between a Kawasaki Versys 1000 or the Suzuki Vstrom 1000.I do mostly commuting on freeway and occasional recreational riding with friends .also I am considering the Honda VFR800 Crossrunner also.Which do you think would be most suited.Thank you for all your excellent reviews
I love your reviews. You crack me up. I am really liking this bike. (And the C14)...

I would trade this obsolete power outlet for standard USB power plug - in my car, too ;) Great review as usual, especially because I like this bike :) Thanks!
hi cager, i´m thinking of moving from my v-strom 1000 to a Yamaha tracer! give me your thoughts about it! is it faster? is it more handly? wich one is more fun to drive?
Yeah, IMO it's not the prettiest thing, both from the driver seat or outside...but it looks like it's a very capable bike, and realistically if you're using that thing in its element you can probably give a damn less as to what it looks like, haha.
That "i understod, you have to pull the cluch in" sounds like, i had to ask them how to start the bike. Has anybody tried both 1000 and 650, and how they fell about weight and fuel comsumption?
I have. Old 650 feels heavier than new 1000. Fuel= old 650 about 4,5- 5;5 liters/100km. New 1000 about 5,5, more if you gun it. New 650= bicycle. old 650= big bike.
Hmm, DL650 K4 is very easy to ride, take my word! Even with pillion I take the bends with ease (my wife is 60 kg, I have 80). Wold not trade this bike except with the newer version, 650 also.
What's with that arsehole in the white van? Wrong side of road. Good review - have this bike myself.... love it! As you say, the torque is the big thing, as it's so low down. Fantastic engine.
He was on the right side of the road. He was over the line a bit (maybe a foot or two). But it's a very narrow road. The rider overreacted. Always assume when approaching blind corners that a cager is hogging the road.
Can't believe you like the looks of a peak? This is a street bike trying to look like an adventure bike. I ride dirt bikes & street I would not want to be on a dirt road on that heavy pig. My opinion
I always looked at this bike as more of a cheaper sport touring bike, that can take gravel roads. Most sport touring bikes suck on gravel, so this is a nice alternative.
I like Suzuki's but just not a fan of this bike. I like the sport bike version & I like adventure bikes but this just doesn't fit into those types so it's more of a naked bike I guess?
Cager: Once again you've proven yourself as the best (and most entertaining) reviewer out there! Keep em comin!!
Bought one a week ago.....fantastic bike. Not as intimidating, bulk/weight/feet down as the BMW GS/KTM/Triumph Explorer. So easy to ride. And loads of lovely torque...I recommend a test ride. (Ex-Yam TDM900 owner).

The DL650 is worth a look too. I guess you will be surprised too how much fun it is.

brilliant review cager & fun listening to your enthusiasm so much so I think I'll buy that V Strom
Great job COTW. This is a real world review and was influential in my recent decision to buy a used 2018 V-Strom 1000, which I am loving! You talk about what’s important, in an entertaining style. Keep up the good work!!
Very nice and frank review! You basically convinced me to buy my new ride -> 2014 1000 V-Strom.
Nice review. Once again giving us your real gut level impressions, which is nice to have to contrast with all of the canned reviews you get in magazines.
Another great review Cager!

I dont understand why so many people say its ugly?! -i dont hear people saying that about the bmw gs, and they're quite similar
Thanks for sharing, one of the better and "honest"/pure reviews I saw!
Good vid- I love mine. All the best!
I have that bike, Love it!! Paved roads, dirt roads, single track when I'm feeling very strong!!!
Awesome Vid love your roads over there most roads here in western canada are long and strait . Love my 2018 Vstrom .

Nice review. Come on Suzuki build another SV1000.
Ok, for those who don't know the meaning of DL V-Strom, i'm going to explain. Great review. Thinking of buying one after a test ride and this has really helped.
Every time you are excited, I smiled :P
I'm going to have to swing a let over one of these between now and soon! Can't wait!
Cager now you have ridden both the Vstrom & Versys which makes the nicer riding machine for every day use, but I'm not interested in HP figures.
I would be very interested in test of Suzuki DL 650, especially in comparison with nc700 :)
me too :)))
Another to yes to the 650 comparison....make it happen Cager.
Me 3 , not the Lams model(35Kw) , The full monty 50.5 Kw (68HP) .
Me 4.. - NOW!! ;-)
Me too. The 650 is less powerful, but oh so easy and fun to ride.

Greetings from UK. Excellent review. Thank you.
hello there. just wanted to say thank you for the review. i actually ended up getting one for touring. great stuff. keep on vlogging.
Great review! The sound of the V twin is worth buying the bike for alone! I am a prospective buyer. What Suzuki need to look at is the cost of the luggage! £725 panniers, £475 Top Box?
I absolutly love it. i want to trade in my old 650 in this model.

Always love adventure bikes.. Need to have some for 200cc!!
Suspension is tuned for crappy roads? Sold!
Great test and great place
What part of the world are you filming in it looks lovely

Anyone knows the name of the road at 15:00 (i would like to take my bike there)
Your German translation was spot on ;) Excellent Video again!

Nice job, one I wish to do. What was the avg fuel use towards the end ?
Out of the new V-Strom 650 & the 1000, which has the lowest Center of Gravity (COG)? Thanks..
Hey Cagerm how do you like the tenere? is it worth getting? any ups or downs?
hahaha ! Awesome review - your enthusiasm is contagious :-)))
I thought it has around 100hp and 100nm, not 90.
It does.
Thanks for review!
But what about v-engine vibrations? Are they exist and sensible?
in Slovak - "Strom" means "Tree" :D :D so you can take it into the woods or what :D :D
hahahah seems legit :P
tímhle by jsi mohl tahat stromy z lesa :D
btw nečekal jsem že potkám čecha/slováka tady :D

Nice review, which town is that?
Ok.... so, new 650 or 3 year old 1000. Value wise. Thanks in advance Cager 😉👌🏼

Great video and review thank you.
Anybody else notice he kind of sounds like Checkoff from Star Trek.
I always wondered who's voice he reminded me of, it is Checkof from Star Trek
testerpt5 :)
testerpt5 Witch actor, I think there were two who played him, one as younger man and one as older man, talking about the movies, not the TV series > ?
Sorry I did not see this review earlier .I am just about to buy my next bike after my Honda CB500X and it is between a Kawasaki Versys 1000 or the Suzuki Vstrom 1000.I do mostly commuting on freeway and occasional recreational riding with friends .also I am considering the Honda VFR800 Crossrunner also.Which do you think would be most suited.Thank you for all your excellent reviews
What did you get?
I love your reviews. You crack me up. I am really liking this bike. (And the C14)...
I would trade this obsolete power outlet for standard USB power plug - in my car, too ;)
Great review as usual, especially because I like this bike :)
Thanks!
But with a simple plug in USB adapter you will have both!
Its not obsolete when you need power for a compressor for the tyres 😊
hi cager, i´m thinking of moving from my v-strom 1000 to a Yamaha tracer! give me your thoughts about it! is it faster? is it more handly? wich one is more fun to drive?
Don't do it, it changed the other way and have NEVER regretted the decision.
what do u mean weird looks bruh??? it looks freakin' awesome.
Nice review, may I ask how tall are you cagerontwowheels ?
175cm
Thanks
Where is this being filmed?

In danish strøm means current
The best thing is when you accellerate laughing...:-)
Suzuki's are like cars to start. You can be in any gear, but you need to hold the clutch.
Yeah, IMO it's not the prettiest thing, both from the driver seat or outside...but it looks like it's a very capable bike, and realistically if you're using that thing in its element you can probably give a damn less as to what it looks like, haha.

My Vstrom 650 , 2014 gives me 3.6 litres to the hundred and I don't always spare the throttle.
This looks like Malta!
oi cage!
não são 90. Mas sim 111 Nm de power.
LOL suzuki clutch in to start... even my old gs400 had that...safety feature
