Forging A Twist Seax Blade, The Second Knife!

  • Did I get that three steel billet welded up? This is part 2 of the Wrought Iron Twist Seax video where I attempt to make Turkish Twist damascus using 1095, 15n20 and mild steel. Copper guard, bloodwood handle. Anxiety drives me to ancient traditions but, ultimately, a knife is forged. The bars were probably not arranged exactly correct nor the twist tight enough. I still like it very much!

Pretty impressive for your firs "S" Grind, a little tip if you're going to do them in the future is always cut in the large hollow Spine up so that you can see what you're doing and dial in the depth as deep as you need.
Another thing, in regards to forging Wrought Iron... if you see a tear forming during the forging process, stop what you're doing dose the Tear with a liberal amount of flux and forge weld it back together, if that doesn't work, let the knife cool to blood temperature hit it with WD-40 with borax on top of it bring it up to heat and forge weld it as normal (the WD-40 wicks the borax into all the nooks and crannies of the wrought iron and the scale will just sort of squish out under your Hammer" and just in case you didn't know you need to work wrought at welding temperature, but judging on how far you've advanced in the past year I can tell that I don't need to tell you that ^.^
Anyhow if you find yourself in a bind and need some advice feel free to contact me at my Gmail or if I'm on at the time you're more than welcome to contact me via Google Hangouts
As usual it's a pleasure watching you work, keep it coming :)

@@GreenBeetle I appreciate the full videos. I cant understand why anyone would complain about the length of them. I have been wanting to get into bladesmithing for years and I enjoy watching the longer videos since they give more detail on the process of making the blades. There are little things that make it into those that I will probably come back for later for inspiration on projects. If you do end up splitting them into two in order to keep the whole process intact, you would get no complaints from me. Keep up the awesome work!

As usual it is amazing work. As much as you diss yourself you have a great deal of skill. I have come to the realization that even master bladesmiths do not have easy times trying new thing and making perfect blades every time. They are meandering through each new challenge just like you and I and often accidentally finish with great work one way or another. You should be proud of what you accomplish!

Well done! In the end you made a beautiful knife, a one of a kind, and learned a few things about doing the next one, keep it up! A few tips, if I may? When it comes to twists, you can not forge the billet, at all, without wildly disrupting the pattern. Once your bars are twisted, and gently welded together with a hand hammer you are done. What ever shape your billet is in after that is what you have to work with, any further drawing, beveling, profiling, etc., *will* distort your pattern so plan your bars to match what you want your final billet dimensions to be. That includes knocking down the high points of the twisted bars into the billet, don't do it, you're better off grinding them flat on all four sides.
As for grinding to get the stars 30% per side is the general rule I use. You end up losing about 60 to 70% of your billet thickness. An excellent way to test this and test, and test without burning up fuel and steel is to use two different colors of sculpting clay. Layer it up just like you would steel, form, twist, stick together into a billet, then start slowly cutting into it with a sharp knife or razor as if you were sanding it down. You can take very thin sections off and clearly see the pattern as it changes. This way you can get a good feel for what to look for when you are grinding. Grind a bit, hit it with some ferric chloride to see where you're at, then go until you get where you want to me.
I hope this helps, and keep up the great work! Cheers!
