maybe its just me, but if all of the expensive drones came with these kinds of video, then i would be so much more comfortable than just "winging it". Great stuff, thank you Jeff for taking the time to make these videos.
Thank you Gino. I agree with you - I think we would see a lot fewer accidents if the drone companies would put out consistent instructional guides on video. DJI actually does a pretty good job at this. Yuneec puts out some - but they should hire someone like me to do that for them LOL. And it is as much about comfort and confidence as it is being a great drone pilot. You're right on the money with that.
Thank you VERY much, Jeff !!!!! I'm plodding along very slowly with my Chroma 4K and have tinkered with the manual settings. I applied a couple of your pointers on a short sunset-flight test tonite and, OMG, what a difference!!!! You put so much work into all of these vids and I've learned SO much. p.s. I put in a plug for you on the RCGroups Chroma thread this evening.
Hey Tom - I'm really glad to hear the information helped you out. In all the flying/shooting I've done I haven't yet tested sunset video too much yet . . . I'm either driving home from work or I'm just too worn out LOL! I can imagine the sunsets you get along the Mississippi are beautiful - can you fly anywhere near the eagles nests? That would be awesome, seeing one of them in flight. The Chroma and Q500 are so similar that a lot of what my videos cover works for both aircraft. Even the Typhoon H has a lot of overlap. I don't hear much from Chroma pilots so I don't know if they're finding these episodes - your plug on the forum should help with that. Thanks!
I finally understand the iso and frame rate settings. Im shooting at 30fps and now I know that i/60 is the ideal I have the filters so now I just need to adjust and see what is going to be best. Thanks for the greatt info
Thank you, David. I'm glad the information was helpful. Please post back after you've done some flights with your ND filters. Do you see a big difference in your footage? The jury is still out for me so I'm interested in hearing what other folks think about that.
I have much respect for you and must say that you do a fantastic job at taking information and making it make sense. Accompanied by your illustrations and technique, you have created a compendium of videos that have helped me to answer most of my concerns/questions. Keep up the good work. I am trying to get my camera set right at this point in my Yuneec experience. Will let you know how that goes. Once again, thanks.
Great tutorial, I have been experimenting with the CG03 and various filters in different situations. I found it to be quite challenging and fun. You've made a great series, thank you for your efforts.
Thank you Shannon! I've played some with filters on my DSLR, especially ND filters, and I've gotten some nice shots with them. Have you tried polarizers or graduated filters on the CGO3? What'd you think of them?
Thanks for the information Jeff. Personal preference, but I think the video with the ND16 filter was the best of the three. it seemed more realistic and clear.
Great! I'm looking for people's opinions on this. I'm definitely going to be doing more testing. I looked closer at the fountain video clips and the ND clip may look a little better to me as well - it should, with that moving water in the image.
The reason we can't see much difference in the smoothness of your first filtered / unfiltered example is because it is a slow-moving forward tracking shot. If it was a fast pan the difference would be much more noticeable... Everyone seems to be shooting at 30 FPS. I shoot at double that (more accurately 59.94), but maintain a 29.97 FPS project, so I can slow stuff down to 50% speed with no loss of resolution, good for smoothing out any less than perfect rotation or gimbal tilt. This allows me to use just an ND8 filter in bright sunlight, and select a shutter speed of 1/125, or 1/160. Why a bit higher than double ? There is a disadvantage to ND filters and lower shutter speeds and specifically drone footage - loss of ground detail. It might not be too bad on its own, but combined with RUclips's video compression, having too low a shutter speed can really kill the detail in your videos, especially in grass and leaves on trees. That's my argument for keeping exposure slightly higher numbers than double frame rate...
Great helping tutorial Jeff, many thanks. I am new with the Q500 4K, straight up amateur, still gathering bits and pieces to finally make some acceptable quality videos and pics. Can you please tell us where we can find these filters that fit the CGO3 4k? Once again, great job, Thanks
You can find them in various places - I steer folks to Carolina Dronz because I do a lot of business with them. You can find several different choices for filter packs at carolinadronz.com/collections/accessories-parts/filter
Hi Jeff, great video and very informative. I have a Chroma and H and I make videos of lighthouses around the UK. Sometimes on a sunny day the white lighthouses glare although the sea looks a nice blue. If I were to use ND filters without adjusting the settings will it still work OK will I have to compensate manually. Thanks again, Jeff M
No, I don't think so. What's happening is the light meter is being fooled and allowing in too much light - but if you put on an ND filter, the camera will simply slow the shutter speed down so it continues to let in too much light. To fix the issue you describe, you want to adjust your exposure value, or EV compensation. You can take the EV down to -.5 or even -1, which wll allow in less light. The ND filter is designed to slow down the shutter, not darken the image. So, if you adjust your EV down and then use an ND filter, you'll get better exposure as well as smoother video from the slower shutter speed.
Episode 9 introduces you to the creative camera settings for your CGO3 camera, including white balance, exposure value compensation (EV), and manual settings including ISO and shutter speed. This video also explains neutral density filters (ND filters), how to install them and use them.
Yes. I actually have one already. I want to get out an fly it more before I start doing tutorials on it. I'll still do videos for the Q500s . . . in many cases, such as this video, the information applies to the Q500 4K and the Typhoon H as well.
I've flown the H several times now . . . wow. Yuneec did an awesome job with this drone. I'm going to do an episode in the near future on the Typhoon H and what it "fixes" from the Q500.
Hi Jeff. I have a question for you. My q500 video only records in 5 minute intervals. Is there settings that I can change to get longer run time or is that just the way it was designed. Thank you for your time my friend and keep making videos your chanel is very informative
Hi Braydie - your drone is operating as designed, and Phantoms and other brands of drones do the same thing. My understanding is that the operating system for the camera limits how long video files can be; once you hit that point, around 5 minutes as you said, it saves what you've recorded and begins a new file. The good news is that you can bring these 5 minute clips into a video editor, line them up and your resulting video should be seamless. This used to bug me, but it actually does have an unintended advantage. At one point I had a problem with my media card but didn't realize it. I flew three long flights and recorded all three, producing 9 or 10 files. Because of the card's problem, some of the files were corrupted and I lost those minutes. However, if all the video for each flight had been in a single file I would probably have lost all the footage from the day. So in my case at least, there was an advantage to the video files being broken up.
Thank you Jeff for this information it was very helpful. I totally understand now how this could be a helpful advantage. Be well my friend and thanks again for your time
