As a newbie turner I appreciate your teaching, especially giving folks heads up about different wood densities very important to understand. Thank you. David
I know this is one of your older videos but I've just recently started watching your channel. I have to say I love your videos, I especially love how you take plywood and pine 2*4's and make something so beautiful with them. I've only been turning for about 2 years now, I'm a state retiree and needed something to do other than reloading and shooting lol. You've given me ideas on how to use scrap pieces and turn nice creations so thank you for that sir. Now having said all of that I'll say this lol. This is absolutely an amazing bowl!! I've already started pulling out pieces of pine dowel and found a beautiful piece of black oak for the bowl itself. I hope you don't mind my stealing your idea lol. God Bless Stay Well and Turn Often
When you glue a dowel into a bore hole like that, it is a good idea to spread glue on the whole dowel, like you did, but also add a bead of glue to the inside of the top of the hole. When you insert the dowel, it will drag that bead of glue through the hole, coating the sides of the hole as it goes. If you apply it only to the dowel, the top edge of the hole will scrape the glue off the dowel as it goes into the hole and you will have a starved glue joint.
Beautiful work, mate! I did something similar a while back but I used epoxy resin to fill the holes. It worked but it didn’t work as well as your bowl did.
Very Impressive. Can't believe you only started under a year ago. I'm also fairly new to woodturning but no way up to your expertise, I must try harder. Love the bowls that you make and will copy some of your ideas. Have you thought about extending your range outside of bowls?
Thank you very much for the positive comments. I love trying different glue up combinations at the moment. I’m working on goblets too, the goal is to make a captive ring one. Thanks again 👍😀
When I saw the beginning of this, I wanted to rush out to my workshop and do the same thing. But I watched to the end and saw the problems you had. I wonder: would the dowel have held better with a harder wood than mahogany? I also noticed some tear out on the mahogany. Would harder wood, e.g., walnut, have solved that? Thanks for all your videos!
Thanks for watching. I am thinking of repeating this design again soon. I might use Ash and Sapele, but drill the holes 1mm wider to give the glue room to bond better. Cheers 😎👍
So far so good. It has been over 4 months now, and the bowl is still in great condition. Yes the end grains were tricky, but gentle cuts and loads of sanding managed to control them. Thank you very much for watching. 👍😀
When putting the dowels in as tight as you did, as you hammer them down you essentially pushed the glue up and out. Next time, try putting glue on the inside and give it a minute to absorb into the interior wood before you insert the dowels. Should glue up much better for you
Beautiful work and creative way to use the dowel for attention points. Great contrast between the mahogany and maple.
Thank you so much 😀
awesome!
Glad you think so! 👍
Beautiful bowl. Especially the rich color of the Mahogany.
Thank you very much 👍😎

Thanks. Yes, there must be a better way to form the blank. Thanks for watching 👍
I like the way the shape of the bowl turns a round dowel into an egg shape.
Thank you for watching
Well done,nice recovery!
Thanks 👍
Nice project! Looked really great!,
Thank you! Cheers!
Beautiful work!
Thank you very much! 🙂👍
Thanks for sharing, an interesting Piece. Glad the glue held. Full View and Like. I’m a new turner so I’m enjoying your videos

Looks great 👍 great idea 👍
Thank you! Cheers!😀

Thanks. I was 50/50 on resin or dowels. I am definitely going to try more resin this month.
Nice bowl good idea
Thank you. It’s not perfect, but again I learned a lot from making it!

I made bowl with dowels and I had a similar experience and conclusion. It was cool to try and came out ok but I probably won't do it again.
Same. It's been a year nearly and I still have not repeated this design. Thanks for watching 👍

Nice work! I like this technique. Novice turner and new subscriber here. Keep up the good work!
Thank you. I’ve only been doing this 4 months! Really enjoying turning. This bowl came out much better than I thought it would.
Great bowl
and a good idea :)
Does it not give problems that it is end grains and side grains?
I think when the wood dries it could cause problems?

You need a good quality heavy bowl scraper it makes a big difference to finish before sanding
Thanks. I’m hoping to invest in more tools soon. Appreciate the tip. 👍

Thanks for the comments and pointers. I'm definitely going to try this next time. I learned so much from making this bowl.
Sanding the mill finish off the dowel would help too.
Nice bowl. I might thy this with smaller dowels.
Verry pretty
Big thank you 😎👍
Sem palavras ; de mais.
Você é muito gentil. Fique seguro
Nice wood and nice bowl. But the nice wood deserved to have all the toolmarks removed. That would had made a even nicer bowl
Thanks. As I continue to learn, I hope to try this bowl again in the future. 👍
Hallo
Thanks for watching 😎
Va.
Thank you 🙏
I've seen worse....
Thanks 👍
