Christmas Tree made from a Christmas Tree! Wood turning
Last year's Christmas Tree has been drying in the garage for 10 months. I was determined to reuse it somehow, so I figured why not make it into another Christmas Tree!
Thank you for watching.

Sapele and Beech Fruit Bowl - Wood turning
Просмотров 14 тыс.14 дней назад
I visited my local Rebuild site, which is set up to take surplus materials from construction sites and put them to good use. I found a piece of an old sapele door frame and had an idea! www.rebuildsite.co.uk The result is absolutely stunning! It measures 10 inch wide and just over 2 inches tall (approx 250mm x 55mm). It always amazes me what people throw away. It's not waste until we stop using...

Thanks for sharing. Full View and Like 👍
Well done. Love reusing last year’s tree to turn this years turned trees and snowmen. Unfortunately we don’t seem to use real trees much any more. You’ve shown a great example.
Very nice sir have a great day ✌️
Useful way to recycle. I’ll be at the Charnwood stand on Sunday in Harrogate 🌞
Great idea.
just brought this lathe as a new turner, got the drill chuck as an extra to drill vases out but cant attach it to the tailstock am i missing some thing obvious!! any thoughts anyone
Possibly. Have you removed the live centre from the tailstock using the push rod?
A real elegant bowl... this very fine red stripes in... absolutly inspiring!!! Would round the edges on top... looks softer... But the combi is outstanding!!! ❤ Chapeau 🎩 👍 🇩🇪
Thank you! Cheers! It is the little delicate touches that make all of the difference. 😀👍
I love to see old wood used to make something beautiful.
I agree! Thanks for watching 👍
That is a beautiful bowl from left over timber
Thank you very much 😀👍
I love how adding a couple pieces of veneer give such a nice result. I am no expert by any stretch but aren't you "copping" out on the bottom? Seems at least you should sand the inside of the reverse tenon if not remount and finish off the bottom. Not criticizing at all, just curious what you could do? Beautiful work made to look easy
Thank you for watching. I was actually thinking the same at that time 3 years ago. About 3 months after this video I bought a laser engraver, so now I glue a disc with my makers mark into the bottom. 👍
@RDMWoodturning Engraved disc for the bottom awesome. I struggle with finishing the bottom as I can never remount perfectly.
Where did you get the name plate for bottom of bowl? Very nice work.
I have a laser engraver so I make them myself on 3mm hardboard. Thanks 👍
I see a lot of interesting combinatios of woods, especially in bowl turing. I have to wonder how they will hold up over time ifthe woods are more or less "athletic". Athletic is a term used to talk about how muchwood moves, even after drying and curing, because of changing atmopheric conditions; not just heat and humidity but barometric pressure as well as ambient humidity if the bowl is sent to another place, say from Delaware to Arizona.
Humidity and indoor heating are big challenges. Hopefully the bowl will hold up. Thanks
Great piece! Also great to hear an English voice (& Northern).
Thank you very much!
Really nice! It is elegant, special use elegant.
Thank you! 😊
Very nice!
Thank you! Cheers! 👍
Belle réalisation bravo 👍👏
Merci du compliment 👍
Thanks 👍
Thank you too
Please double or triple the veneer pieces. I’d like to see more color in the beautiful things you make.
I know what you mean. I've just ordered some 1.5mm veneer, so it's 2.5x thicker. Hopefully I'll feature it soon. Thanks
@ the thinner color lines feel like they barely add color to the pieces. I like splashes of color on some pieces so I would love to see the colored lines be more prominent.
All wood is good wood 😊 lovely job and the little bit of effort to do the tulip red line, well worth it.
Yes, thank you 👍

Thank you
This is a very beautiful bowl! I'm really enjoying your combinations! Thank you for sharing!
Thank you too for watching! 😎👍
Beautiful bowl thanks
Thank you very much!
Very nice.
Thank you! Cheers! 👍😎
Those nasty old scrap pieces turned out to be some gorgeous wood. You’ve been turning some really nice work lately. Well done!
Thank you. I’ve still got one more sapele scrap wood bowl to turn, the glue is nearly set. 👍
That very beautiful sir have a great day ✌️
Thank you kindly😀👍
Very impressive, as always.
Thank you! Cheers! 😎👍
awesome piece a great way to use up left over bits of wood
No scrap gets left behind 👍👍👍
That old door frame is getting a LOT of recycled mileage! While I LOVE sapele, I've not worked with beech at all. I LOVE your results. However, how hard is beech? I find that a harder maple AND paduak is actually really, really touchy (I had one of the two glueups, similar to yours in this video, catastrohpically shatter on the lathe) because the density of the two are so radically different...or at least that's my working theory. I mean, I did have a bad catch (which I rarely get anymore), but that could not possibly be the issue. After all, it can't be my fault, right?
Beech is pretty hard, right up there with Ash. If I were to do it again I’d probably go for Cherry with the sapele, so that the density would be similar. No one enjoys a catch. Oak is the one wood that always gets me! 😀👍
Oak...IKR?!?!?!
Excellent turning can you tell me the supplier of the makers name discs
I make them myself with a laser engraver. Thanks 👍
@@RDMWoodturning What kind of laser engraver? I see lots on RUclips but never really know what products yield what results. It would be nice to be able to put a real world result to a product name. Thanks and the bowl turned out very nice. I particularly liked that there was no tear out as a result of your glue up.
@@twoblacklabs I have an aufero laser 2. It was fairly cheap and a budget model (£200 ish). Engraves well, but struggles to cut, as it is fairly low powered. Most lasers use the same software laserGRBL. If I were to buy another it would be something with a bit more power.
@@RDMWoodturningthanks. Cheap is good!
Why have you put the red veneers in?
The red is just a subtle highlight. It’s the fine details that elevate a piece from being ok to good. 👍
@RDMWoodturning thanks for that. I'll give it a try.
Nicely done!
Thank you! Cheers!
Nice
Thanks 😀👍
Thanks 👍What a great result .
Glad you enjoyed it 😀👍
NICE!!!!!! How do you attach the bowl to hollow it?
I make a mortise hole in the base with a dovetail, then when I flip it over to hollow out, my chuck expands in the mortise to hold the bowl in place.
@@RDMWoodturning oh I see! Thx
Nice bowl about the right sort of thickness in my opinion. Lots of turners go way to thin. If your selling your stuff I think customers like to feel a little weight about a bowl.
Totally agree. There is also a difference between a decorative bowl and a function bowl. 👍
Turned out really pretty -- nice work
Thank you very much 😀👍
awesome!
Glad you think so! 👍
Awesome job gonna have to try that
Have fun. 😀👍
Great job on the bowl. Where did you find the colored inserts?
They are 0.6mm tulipwood veneer. I bought them from here www.thewoodveneerhub.co.uk/
Beautiful piece, thanks for sharing
Thank you 👍
The oak took a beautiful shine and the grain patterns are wonderful. Very pretty bowl!
Thank you so much 😀
Nice Piece, thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching!
So...following your lead (from a year or so ago), when I replaced my entranceway hardwood flooring, I saved the oak boards and did what you did here. I oriented the boards a bit differently and didn't add the veneer, but I did get three bowls out of it. What a great way to preserve a piece of your home's history.
I’m a huge believer in reusing and recycling where possible. 👍
Very nice. I really like oak that has been well turned and finished. Good job.
Thank you very much! 😀👍
Really nice piece I like the contrast with the red veneer
Yeah the veneer really lifts the piece. Thanks 👍
Very nice.
Thank you! Cheers!
Thank you. What is the veneer? Plastic? Would you mind showing the tool that you are going to use. I'm a beginner. It is lovely.
The veneer is 0.6mm thick tulipwood that has been dyed red. My main tool that I’m using 98% of the time is a 3/8 hamlet bowl gouge (10mm). A good quality bowl gouge is key.
Good tip to use ca glue in dovetail, thanks
Yes, I think that it makes a positive difference with pine. Glad to share. 👍
although expensive, would a good quality plywood give a better finished
Very possibly. When I make one like this again, I am going to use a new carbide tip to see if that helps too. Thanks for watching.
