Black Market is absolutely phenomenal. Jaco’s bass tone on it is the epitome of perfect.
It is a great tone, but Alphonso Johnson is fantastic on the brilliant title track. Jaco is only on two of the Seven tracks.
When I retire, please nobody disturb me for about 20 years!. I have a few albums to listen to.
Indeed.
During WR's sixteen year existence, the genius of each musician who came and went was monumental. I didn't like jazz fusion until a friend INSISTED I listen to WR. My "let's get this over with" attitude disappeared quickly and now I've collected (almost) everything of theirs. Thanks for the groovy show, Pete and Chuck!
I got into jazz fusion through this channel and the group Spyro Gyra. A friend loaded a video of theirs to my page on Facebook and after watching it, I wanted to hear more from them.
My number one Weather Report album is Sweetnighter. Also, I think the first eight Weather Report studio albums (the debut through Mr. Gone) are fantastic. You can't go wrong with any of those.
Chuck is one of the best guests for this kind of music. Loved the video!
Thank you very much Dante!
Agreed. Chuck, Chad and Eric from ITPS and Ryan Skow from HVS are the best.
Enjoyed the video. I am surprised that you omitted 8:30...Grammy Award Winner!
Great conversation between you both. I just finished a deep dive into the entire catalogue you outlaid and enjoyed it much.
1) Mr. Gone 2) Heavy Weather 3) I Sing The Body Electric 4) Mysterious Traveller 5) Black Market 6) Sweetnighter 7) Night Passage 8) Tale Spinnin 9) Weather Report (1971) 10) Procession 11) Sportin Life 12) Weather Report (1982) 13) Domino Theory 14) This Is This
I discovered SoT in late 2019/early 2020 and really delved deeper into the catalog once the lockdown hit. So for the better part of 4 years, I've been learning more about bands I already loved and learning to love new bands. I go "thrifting" for music nearly every day and years ago, picked up Heavy Weather for a dollar. Listened to it a couple times but never thought much about it. Two weeks ago, I found Mysterious Traveler for 25 cents. One thing I've been doing since discovering SoT is when I find one of these albums that I know Pete and company have discussed here on the channel, I'll search a video discussing that band's discography to see if I've picked up a stem or a gem. So in finding Mysterious Traveler the other day, I'm pleased to hear Chuck rank it #2 and Pete has it at #6. It appears this time I found a gem and can't wait to dive into it. Thanks for all these videos, Pete. You do a great job and provide a much-needed resource for music lovers.
When it comes to iconic jazz fusion bands, Weather Report have got to be near the top as one of the best and I have a lot of respect for them, they made some of the greatest music ever and you guys did an excellent job with ranking the albums.
This was very cool. My dad is a massive jazz/fusion head and introduced me to WR about 20 years ago. I never really appreciated (or understood) their genius until recently, so I will check out these albums. As always, keep up the great work. Best channel on YT.
This channel just keeps on giving, always there is a gem I've missed earlier, just great!
Phenomenal episode. No one talks about WP anymore and they should. Black Market, Heavy Weather and Night Passage are masterpieces of the jazz fusion genre. Without Miles Davis's Bitches Brew, not sure they would exist, but thank God they do.
I've never listened to Weather Report before, but will check them out. Looking forward to seeing Kurdt on again soon as well!
Good to see Chuck. We missed you, hermano.
Gracias mi hermano, It was a tough week with Tuesday being an extremely sad day for us. I appreciate it, hopefully we will also get to chat sooner than later.
Wonderful show.

Actually, Bradbury lifted that title from a Walt Whitman poem that was written way before Bradbury wrote his science fiction version.
Hey there Pete, great rapport between you and Chuck discussing this phenomenal band-your enthusiasm really shows; enjoyed this review a lot... thanks👏🏻👏🏻🎯
My top two are Black Market and Heavy Weather - hard to beat these, Jaco on fire! Thank you guys, great to see Chuck again! I agree with everything you guys said.
FANTASTIC episode!! There are not enough stars to rate this band. I LOVE all their studio recordings and I feature them regularly on my radio shows. One thing I need to mention is the HUGE influence bitches brew had on weather report and in my opinion music in general.
Been waiting for this , great to see these albums get some love . Terrific guys
Really loved that, great work lads. 'Black Market' has always been at the top for me by a tiny, tiny margin. I'd always ignored the post-'Procession' releases until this episode. Just started with 'This Is This!', and it's actually very good - not WR in the classic sense, but still an enjoyable listen - with CS on fire as you both said. 'Sportin' Life' next!
Always good to see Chuck Alvarez always seems to have so much passion for his music, did get to see them in 1979 at Birmingham Odeon UK,aged 13,mindblowing,thanks Dad
Great show ..Night passage would be my favourite... Jaco just dominates this album with his 16th note express train , his chops were so strong during this stage ..love it.
That’s my favorite album too!!!!!
Can't wait to check these guys out. Thanks again fellas.
I gave it a listen and it's sublime . Thanks Pete and Chuck ...made my day. Must for Jazz/Fushion afficionados.
Right at the height of my liking Weather Report (1974, Mysterious Traveller) they played a free Columbia Records showcase concert at SPAC that September! So I got to see them that one time only. Played some from that album and their setup on stage was cool because the drums were set up on the right side, facing in so we got a sideways view of the drummer. Joe had banks of keyboards surrounding him. Very cool. Oddly, this show had them (among others) opening for Blue Oyster Cult! ok? It worked for me!
That sounds like an amazing and cool gig!
Great show guys! Absolutely love Jaco's bass. But what's going on with the lighting on Chuck? Goes from really bright to really dark over & over. Would be nice to see him lit consistently. Especially because he's such a smiley, happy guy. Thanks to both of you. 👌
I’m sorry about the lightning, I had my MacBook positioned to a direction where if my wife came into the room, she would not be intruding on the video chat.
Great video, guys. Great shirt, Chuck! Huge WR & Mets fan here.
I am with you guys...the late albums are the pre-cursor to the Zawinul Syndicate. The vocals remind me of ths Pat Metheny Group World/Latin albums. The reason Joe Z. started with the bass patches? Jaco, unfortunately, became too erratic. That & the technology bled over to the Victpr Bailey-era. IMO.
Any album with less Wayne is not cool.
You guys remember when Downbeat mag gave Mr. Gone a 1-Star review? The band had an issue to rebut this review. Great daze.
Almost done...nice to see the early albums getting some love. Definitely more Miles-Bitches Brew era stuff... >what's improvised sounds composed...what's composed sounds improvised
Yesss black market. C'est un album superbe. J'ai découvert adolescent. Magnifique.
just now checking this out, when yiu guys mention the fender players you missed my favorite GEORGE DUKE From me to you & Reach for it... are killer albums with phenomenal players .. good job guys ✌️
Very nice to have this insight, many thanks both.
Great show guys! I was familiar with a handful of their albums but now I've got a LOT more that I missed and need to listen to. Saw them live in July 1974 at the Capitol Theater in Port Chester, NY. (Opening acts were If and Larry Coryell with Eleventh House.) Enjoyed the shout out for Ralph Towner and Oregon! Never hear them talked about anymore. Would love to hear a show on them!
I'm one of the few people who loves the 80s albums. My top 3 goes like this:
1. Night Passage
2.Domino Theory
3.Procession
Omar Hakim is the greatest drummer the band ever had and he's spectacular on Domino Theory and Procession. And some of Jaco's best bass playing with the band is on Night Passage.
Hello there! Thanks you guys to present music with excellence in your channel (on your channel? at your channel? Sorry, I am never sure about it...)
I'm 55 y.o. but took serious contact with Weather Report and Return To Forever just a decade ago. Interesting that, though I love Di Meola solo and Corea Electric Band, RTF didn't got me so strongly as WR. My top-5 list:
5 - Night passage
4 - Mr. Gone
3 - Mysterious traveller
2 - Heavy weather
1 - Black market (should say, this one two steps above the others)
Gday Chuck....only Pete and his cool guests can get me to listen to an hour show about a band I’ve never got into.....Cheers....
Love Omar Hakim though.....il have to check some of this stuff out.....😎
CHUCK = “ tremendous co- host with PETE/ love his vibe/ personality!!👍💯
I absolutely agree!!
@@seaoftranquilityprog 👍
@@seaoftranquilityprog I absolutely love Chuck can you please have him on more often Pete???
Thank you everyone, it was great chatting with Pete about a band I live very much.
*love*
Like the 'Daylight Again' shirt!
Alphonse Mouzon was a big favourite of Led Zeppelin's John Bonham. Apparently on more than one occasion hotel staff had to have words after he started jamming along in the middle of the night to Mouzon records on the drum kit he'd had set up in his room.
LOL!
Great show guys. I love all the different incarnations of Weather Report in the 1970's. Every lineup brought a different kind of magic to the table. Their live performance of "A remark you made" from Offenbach, Germany, Sept. 29, 1978 is spellbinding. The note Wayne Shorter hits at 2:24 is beyond sublime
Thank you for the reviews . I am a big prog rock fan , and have only heard a handful of Weather Report tracks . I look forward to checking out their catalog . I'll start with your suggested entry titles Night Passage and Heavy Weather . It was great to see Mr. Alvarez mentioning a couple of my favourite guitarists in your previous video , Bill Nelson and Kim Mitchell . Glad to see them get some recognition . I know that Pete has sung their praises in the past as well . Thank you gentlemen for your recommendations !
Surprised to see Night Passage at 9! Probably in my top 2 for them.
Jaco is excellent on Joni mitchells Don juans reckless daughter album. The title track, and off night backstreet, and Dreamland, the whole album.
Yes, such a superb album!! He also makes a great contribution to my favourite Joni album, Hejira 💜, on title track, Coyote, Black Crow and Refuge of the Road. Check out Trio of Doom with Jaco, John McLaughlin and Tony Williams - full on!
Not to forget her Shadows and Light double live album with one of the finest line-ups ever, JP and Pat Metheny and Michael Brecker, Lyle Mays, Don Alias .playing killer versions of some of her best songs.
Awesome show! Gotta work on my WR collection, I’ve only got 5 of their albums.
I saw Jaco's first Detroit appearance. I was an Alphonso Johnson fan at the time and did not know who Jaco was.
I was "who is THIS guy? what is that clanky sound?? LOL.
John McLaughlin's Shatki was the opening act.
Really cool and extensive ranking of this colossal jazz fusion band. One of the first bands I had ever heard regardless of genre. The mid period is also my favorite agree with your ranking
My top 8 (Since I have heard only 8 of the them)
1. Black market
2. Heavy weather
3. Sweet nighter
4. Mysterious traveller
5. Mr gone
6. Weather report 1982
7. Tale spinnin
8. Weather report
Alphonse Mouzon Mind Transplant and Billy Cobham Spectrum both feature game changing guitar work from the legendary Tommy Bolin. Should not be missed by any lover of guitar firepower.
Would have loved to have heard Tommy add some Stratocaster muscle to a couple of Weather Report tracks. I can imagine him bouncing off Jaco.
Thanks, this segment is so great, and I couldn't agree more! Black Market is probably my fav too .... but also... also, and also... :)
Speechless used to be a favorite track of mine on the 80,s “weather report” album. A doleful, suspenseful sound. Now it give me the chills, as a musical comment by Zawinul, on Pastorius’s death, Pastorius was beaten to death in a bar fight. The last bars of “ speechless’ ,the 10 blows.
14) Sportin' Life 13) This Is This! 12) Domino Theory 11) Mr Gone 10) Weather Report 82 9) Procession 8) Tale Spinnin' 7) I Sing The Body Electric 6) Night Passage 5) Mysterious Traveller 4) Weather Report 71 3) Black Market 2) Heavy Weather 1) Sweetnighter. It's really difficult from 8 down.
Black market is a great album of theirs
I like seeing Chuck, knowledgeable guy. Good work Pete.
Love hearing both your thoughts on jazz artists. Look forward to more in the future.
I have looked into a lot of jazz before the '70s, but WR has been a staple for me, as well as The Mahavishnu Orchestra. My ranking:
1. Heavy Weather (it's more mainstream yes, but Jaco rules!)
2. Black Market (the variety of players makes this a fun listen)
3. Mysterious Traveller (the killer cover matches the music for me!)
4. Sweetnighter (only slightly better than the debut for me)
5. Weather Report '71 (I love the bass work on this too!)
6. I Sing the Body Electric
7. Tale Spinnin'
8. Night Passage
9. Weather Report '82
10. Procession
11. This is This (Santana's guitar work brings this higher for me)
12. Domino Theory
13. Mr. Gone
14. Sportin' Life
i love jazz fusion
R.I.P. Joe Zawinul, Victor Bailey and Jaco, Great band.
Fandango! is the name of the ZZ Top album you were searching for Pete 😉
yep, was right on the tip of my tongue and I couldn't spit it out...THE OLDS! LOL
Thank you Jimmy, Pete guessed soon thereafter and I had to go through my iTunes list.
A great show and discussion. Great information on the albums and members. I love the earlier stuff 10 times more than the later material. The later material to me feels like the building blocks of "Smooth Jazz". I was never a fan of smooth jazz, their sound reminds me of Spyro Gyra, The Yellow Jackets, The Rippintons, etc...
Smooth jazz never appealed to me. It lacked any kind of soul. Often times these bands has great musicians. But it failed to move me.
@@carlsalazar4490 Exactly! 😉
Went out and bought Heavy Weather yesterday because of Pete and Chuck. Stoked to listen to it.
Good show. My father and I saw them when Birdland came out. Loved it.
I'm still eagerly awaiting the planned Weather Report documentary. There was a crowdfundraiser for it like 6 years ago, but there hasn't been an update in years. They were my first fusion band that I was getting into because I was learning bass, and Jaco was apparently the best. Can't agree more with how well Heavy Weather sounds overall.
Sadly Josef's middle born son had recently passed away from the coronavirus.
1. Heavy Weather
2. Black Market
3. 8:30 (Album)
4. Night Passage
5. Weather Report
6. Mr. Gone
7. I Sing The Body Electric
8. Tale Spinnin'
Chucks top 5: 1) Black Market 2)Mysterious Traveller 3)Heavy Weather 4) Sweetnighter 5) Night Passages.
I will say this music never appealed to me through my music evolutionary years. Obviously heard of the band but that is all, then reached a point where I questioned why ignore good music? Have checked out a few of the tracks both of you mentioned and the musicianship is evident and I probably will investigate more of the catalog. Thanks Chuck and Pete for a good show (again!)
There must be something wrong with me but I LOVE This Is This! It's my favorite Weather Report album and it's the only one by them that I love.
"I sing the body electric" was the title of an episode of "The Twilight Zone" in the early 1960s.
"Sweetnighter" was the name of a medicine given to children to stop them wetting the bed !
Thank you grim that ruins the mystique for me 😝
@@TheGenreman Ha ha, sometimes it's better not to know !
But I just have to. It's a bit like song lyrics, knowing what the song is about or what inspired them or how the song was recorded or who might have played on them, for me is better than remaining blissfully unaware.
Having said that though, my favourite piece of drumming on a Rolling Stones song is on "You can't always get what you want" and it turns out it wasn't even Charlie Watts playing !
Oh well !!
Oh yeah! I've been looking forward to this one and you guys definately didn't disappoint. I agree with Pete on "Mr Gone" being a fine album. I think everything from the first self titled album to the second self titled album is essential jazz fusion (Including Tokyo and 8:30). The best tracks from the last four albums could've made a terrific long single CD or double vinyl.
I DO own every one of them with no regrets. I'm looking forward to the Billy Cobhsm ranking. I'm a big fan.
Weather Report is mi fovorite band! I have all this album! Thank for this video!
Man, this just makes me want to listen to all their records again. The run from the first lp to maybe Night Passage is astonishing, especially if your fond of the bass. Black Market is probably my favourite, if only cos you get both Jaco & Alphonso Johnson & with Narada Michael Walden, Alex Acuña, Chester Thompson, yes, I think that might be the rhythm section taken care of!
The fact that Weather Report did not utilize a guitar player on virtually all of their compositions was probably the reason I was drawn to Weather Report. I was thrilled to hear a band that was so influential/brilliant sans guitar. This band changed the way I view all music.
Amazing breakdown, I feel my top 3 WR albums are 1 ) Black Market (straight fire) 2) Sweet Nighter (125 st congress) 3) Heavy weather Thanks for the content...
1.Heavy weather
2.Black Market
3.Night Passage
4.Procession
5.Tale Spinnin
6.Mr.Gone
7.This is this
8.Mysterious traveller
9.Sportin life
10.Weather Report(1982)
11.Domino theory
12.Sweetnighter
13.I sing the body electric
14.Weather Report (1971)
Thank you so much for your video ❤️🙏
I don't know much about Weather Report but I do know that Heavy Weather is a classic.
If you're a fan of Jazz-Rock/Fusion from a more Jazz or R&B standpoint, Weather Report were a phenomenal band. Nothing like their peers.
1. mysterious traveller....
2. black market....
3. tale spinnin' ....
4. heavy weather....
5. procession....
6. domino theory....
7. weather report....(1982)
8. night passage....
9. mr gone....
10. sportin' life....
My level of respect has gone through the roof since you guys are Mets fans, great Jersey
It was Ray Bradbury who wrote "I sing the body electric" - I believe it is an anthology like his "The Illustrated Man" and one of his bigger sellers in the late sixties and early seventies.
...and a Twilight Zone epi & a Rush tune ("1001001 S.O.S.").
@@jazzpunk Bradbury wrote that script for Twilight Zone.
@@peterm.fitzpatrick7735 Cool. Thank you.
Now we're talking !
Was just listening how Weather Report influenced Ian Dury Hit me with your rythem stick. A big fan. Mysterious Traveller for me.
Norman Watt-Roy nails the Jaco 1/16th note groove on "Rhythm Stick".
I had a chat with Norman at a Blockheads gig and he was truly channeling Jaco
@@grahamallen9393 Cool that he could pull it off back then. Most of us took about 10-15 years after the fact to get it even close. :-0
So beautifully done this show. I had to look up some WR-shows because i must bye all their CDs. I bought Heavy Weather in the spring of ‘85, loved it (still do), and never bought another… now is the time. What a band. I’ve been "this close" to buy their entire catalouge a few times through the years, but never did. Well, it’s never too late… Right?
Chuck and Pete make a good pair. Their knowledge of music brings life to music. I need to record Chuck’s laugh on my phone. His laugh always puts a smile on my face. Pete I’m not sure how you are able to find your guests. Might make a good segment.
Thanks-I’d forgotten about them.
"Nubian Sundance" groove begot Genesis "Wot Gorilla'.
Drum Fill in Zappa's "More Trouble every day - begot fill in Genesis live "Afterglow" which begot the most well-known fill of all time "In the Air".
Got to agree with Chuck, my favourite jazz fusion band ..... by a country mile! And first 2 albums my favourites
Seeing Chuck put Mr.Gone so low was very surprising but it absolutely makes sense and maybe will have me look at it differently. Joe doubling Jaco's bass notes on his synth on River People drives me nuts.
Although personally, I really never thought the band made a bad album "Mr. Gone" music wise is still a great album.
@@chuckazeee Absolutely, appreciate all your knowledge man. Hope to keep seeing you on frequently.
I also like Black Market! Agree also with Pete that Mike Stern would have been awesome in the band! I love the Prog/Jazz Fusion shows!
Pete’s evaluation always rates number 1. His review and Chuck’s puts Black Market at the top. Right on! I think BM is a transitional album like Miles’ BB even though BM was late in 1982 but still a testament to its multi-dimensional nature of representation over 40 years later. GBG NO EDITS.
Thinking of all the Weather Report drummers I think Alex Acuña would be my favourite.
WR was the best of the fusion bands. They were genuine, musi cal and didn't overplay. Best that they didn't have a guitarist. My top 3 - Heavy Weather, Night Passage and Black Market.
Sweetnighter has been my favorite for years. The earlier years to me was the best. Black Market will all ways ranked in my top 5
I would have loved to witness many of these fusion bands when they are in their prime. To be surrounded by like minded music fans enjoying the music. Their was a chemistry among musicians then that just can’t be duplicated today. Right place right time.
Cool show guys! My Top 5 are the same as yours Pete with one exception - I would put Mysterious Traveller instead of Black Market!
I’m pretty new to these guys, but I Have the live album, 8:30. And it’s killer!
I'm back...Mr. Gone (my screen name is from "Punk Jazz") coulda been great if it was more "organic" (less synths).
Tale Spinnin'? Man, Ndugu kicks some major ass on this album. Santana paid more, I guess. :-O
Shorter, IMO, is one the great composers of Jazz. His Blue Note albums are superlative.
Shorter was of another level of greatness, the innovative genius behind what we now hear as the Post-Bop movement. Netherwordly composer and a virtuoso on both the soprano and tenor saxophones.
@@chuckazeee Agree.
Given your avatar, I always assumed your screen name was from Fuze's solo album with the same name!
@@georgelamie7001 It morphed into that because somebody else had Punk Jazz.
Back in '98 (pre-RUclips), I was PJ. ;-O
If your into Spiro Gyra check out .. Gazuze and Espresso 2 by GONG (with Allan Holdsworth)
Very informative.
ZZ Top (Fandango, by the way) and Weather Report in the same review sentence. Home at Last! Love it.
If Mike Stern in W-Rpt?
Mind blown....
It’s enough just to contemplate the greatness of the Black Market album.
The "fifth" drummer would be Narada Michael Walden. Alphonse Mouzon is indeed a criminally underrated drummer! Up there with Billy Cobham for sure.
I love all eras of weather report n zawinul
I dont have any WR after 8.30 live and agree that Heavy Weather is a great entry into them , and though that was the first one I got my favourites are Black Market and Mysterious Traveller. When I was getting onto them I came across a copy of Live in Tokyo so had to get it and so glad I did its great. I also couldnt resist getting the Forecast Tomorrow box set that came out back in 2006 as that has the live dvd from 78 with Jaco on it and though I had most of whats on the first 2 discs there are some unreleased cuts on them and the thrid disc is all post 8:30. Anything pre 1980 is great - though I would agree that the earlier Miroslav Vitous stuff probably isnt the best place to start but its a great place to eventually get to. Also absolutely love the 2002 live and unreleased set.
