Queen of the Nile, IOD Paint Inlays, handpainted and blinged up.

  • In this video, I am using the IOD Queen of the Nile Paint Inlay on a large Mid Century Wardrobe. I show you how I lay out this missive inlay on a verticle surface using low tack masking tape and I then show you how I use painting techniques to bring life and color to the inlay. With some added molds and some gold bling. the finished piece is, if I don't say so myself, very successful.

    Love! You knocked it out of the park again! I saw your hardware and said Yes! Do you have a link for where you bought them? Saw purple paint and said yes! Saw the gold leaf and said yes! Saw you were going to color the black and white image and was so excited. One question--when you applied the gold leaf along the "rough arch" up top and the upside down "arch" in what manner did you apply the glue? It wasn't filmed. Was there a pattern, or did you just glob glue a little here and there? Also love how you really customize an existing image to make it your own. Those molds added on to the ladies head and her waistband for example--I just loved. I also wonder if you do sketches ahead of time to brainstorm your final ideas. I'm a retired graphic designer so that's usually done in my industry. As a graphic designer we would never ever use "clip-art" for a final design. It may be used for a rough comp layout. So I appreciate how you really customize and tweak the inlay design.

    • @MadebyMarley
      @MadebyMarley  2 года назад +2

      Hello such wonderful interest I will try to answer your questions.
      The hardware were the original wardrobes so unfortunately no link however you could try looking at MCM second hand handles on eBay. The gold application I just applied the size in a rough ark in a random way ( my apologies for not showing you )
      If a piece is very involved I generally always sketch it out. I would say I have 3 designs in the planning but they take a number of weeks before I get to the stage where I lay out everything such as inlays stamps transfers or decopage. I also do a paint chart using my choices on card to see if it works. I can take ages looking at an inlay thinking just what I can do that will be different or unusual and most importantly sell well.
      I think I've answered everything I am so pleased you liked it and love that you asked about the piece.
      Thanks once again for watching, Marty and I really appreciate it X

      @@MadebyMarley Thank you! That does explain a lot. Seems your ideas are very planned out which I like to hear. Love it! Darn about that hardware. I hope I can find some similar. They were so cool. I hope to paint a 2nd-hand armoire and envision changing the large doors to look like castle doors. So need some hunky round pulls like yours. Have you ever "enhanced" furniture with chipboard? Custom cut it to a certain shape and placed on doors?

    Goodness, all the hand painting and detailing had to be much more time-consuming than the hour we watched you work. How long did it really take you to complete? Also, considering the time, how much can you charge for this beautiful piece of furniture? Actually, I have a million questions for you... What is your background? Did you come from a fine art background? I'm also curious whether you tend to find it a bit difficult to sell your 'art' pieces since so many seem to prefer neutral shades that interior designers are showcasing ad nauseam... I am starting to see more color starting to show up in homes, so I'm hopeful maximum style will be back in style again...(?)

    • @MadebyMarley
      @MadebyMarley  2 года назад +1

      Hi there okay I will try and answer all your questions.
      Okay the reality is it took me two days from start to end.
      The handpainting is just a suggestion so was just putting down colour so not really very long.
      I went to university and have to degrees both neither in a creative subject, one in social work and one in psychology I also have a post grad also in social work. 20 years ago I on a complete whim opened a pottery shop, which was very successful all my art skills were used in abundance untill I fell pregnant with twins I at the time already had 3 kids so I closed my shop to raise all my babies ...it was then I started to paint furniture. However I still have all my kilns and still run pottery classes and up until covid taught in schools.
      I am very fortunate I have carved out a niche in the UK.
      Yes my furniture sells and without much problems sometimes it might take up to 6 months but it goes. My most popular commissions are a very bright Indian ethnic boho look and they are often asked for. The more detailed colourful and unusual sells for me and if I painted a piece of furniture white and sanded the edges I know it would not sell.
      Maximalism style is what we have built a business on and the last question my work sells between £500 and £900 depending on how long it's taken.
      This includes the piece bring shipped on a pallet. I paint two a week.
      Any other questions just let me know, if you live in an area where colour doesn't sell or people enjoy a more pared down piece. Just adapt my colours and hold back .. however do not compromise ever. I love your questions and thanks so much for commenting and watching.
      Lel x X ❤️

      @@MadebyMarley Oh my, more than I would have ever expected. Thank you for taking the time to share this concise story of your creative life. I cannot bring myself to paint what seems to be the beloved 'farmhouse' style that most furniture painters demonstrate in so many of their youtubes from the U.S. They are certainly lovely, but I come from a fine art background and want to create pieces that excite me. Your pieces do just that. I can't get enough of your painterly style. Good to know they are appreciated and sell well for you. I have to laugh since I have yet to list any of my pieces for sale. My house is bursting with many that I need to move out, so I can work on pieces stacked on top of each other waiting for space. You see, I'd rather paint than deal with the business end of things, so I keep putting it off... Ridiculous really. It is so nice to know a little more about who you are and I do hope you will share more tidbits of your life in your videos. I imagine that many others are also interested in getting to know you personally. Thanks again for your time. PS - Any of your children taken an interest in art?

    • @MadebyMarley
      @MadebyMarley  2 года назад

      I'm glad you like my style, the UK is a little different I feel when it comes to furniture there is no denying that there are people who just enjoy plain painted furniture and that's great but the farmhouse style just isn't such a big market.
      And I'm with you I like the beautiful white furniture but would struggle to sell it although I do farmhouse pieces as commissions.
      Selling dip your toe in the water pick one of your pieces get some staged and good photos showing all the details. Then don't overthink it. Put it on Facebook market place. Ask someone to help if it's the technical stuff ( I'm not good at that so Marty does that part) pricing to begin with don't go crazy put a fair price on your piece adding your time and materials used. And test your local market. See what happens be brave it's difficult to put yourself out there but how will you ever know. If it doesn't sell it does not mean your work is not good it just means your piece has not met the eyes of someone who wants it. ..
      I'm not brave but I try to be I'm actually quite shy and I'm only getting used to RUclips. As for sharing I still struggle to wrap head around why people would be interested in me ....ha ha ha
      Lastly my oldest of my many children has an art degree went to university and is an amazing artist...she could put me to shame. My son is a brilliant photographer and the others are creative but don't want to do art. Marty my husband is brilliant with wood and can build and make anything if you ask him he's great at fixing broken furniture and also hugely technical so we work well together.
      Now get on with selling your work.
      Lel ❤️

      @@MadebyMarley Yes, I'm overdue putting my pieces up for sale. A big issue besides my procrastination is time... Working nearly full time, given what limited free time I have, all I want to do is be in my studio. Chores, obligations, cooking, etc. limit my time even more ~sigh... I do wonder how people do it when they have so much more on their plate than I do? (Five kids!) About people wanting to know the artist behind the piece of furniture they admire. Without a doubt, sharing who you are adds so much to your viewers' interest and loyalty. I began my interest in painting furniture by watching Debi's Design Diary a few years ago. Over the years she has accumulated a huge following and given her success recently opened a large store. Her older videos were unique because she always told a quick story along with demonstrating her technique. Watch this to get an idea of her edited video style ruclips.net/video/Gr0G0vqLbgU/видео.html . Your unique style of furniture painting deserves many more viewers than you seem to have yet garnered, people need to see your stuff.
