You should of seen the trout fishing in Jacksonville 30 year's ago. A 10lb trout didnt even turn a head.

I've been fishing the pacific for the last 30 years. He said "deep water" and I was thinking offshore. San Diego Bay is deeper than 13 feet. Hell, I've caught my limit of Yellowfin tuna and could see Point Loma the whole time in over 1000 feet of water.
That said, I look forward to learning a new fishery. I've already got myself some inshore setups, as all my gear for fishing out west is only good for offshore, here.

Jax has the best inshore of FL. Not only tarpon and snook, caught a small permit off the beach on the 19th on that same day..
Try a float rig with jig and live bait, smashed a 35 in slob trout in july....Duval

You call that a Monster Trout ? Back in the 70's We were Catching Trout, AKA Weakfish up to 17 LBS. My personal best was 14.7 Lbs. My Personal best off the Beach was 11.5 Lbs. The Delaware Bay was known as the Weakfish Capitol of the World. They are the Northern Cousins to the Spotted Sea Trout, AKA Weakfish. The Fish of 10bs. & over were known as Tiderunners. Then Commercial netting & Worthless careless fisherman ruined it. Over catching by nets & over fishing by fisherman & then just throwing tons of their catches away in the Trash or even on the roads. The Boom eventually died & withing yrs. it slowly Dwindled down to few, unless you know your Stuff & knew how to still Find them. I was fortunate in that I made it a Priority to learn all about them & where to find & catch. I was able to still get Good fish up into the Early 2000 & was able to show my sons everything about them. We did catch a few Spotted ones up here over the yrs. even up to 5lbs. but nothing to rave about.
You hit it, nets and poor sportsmanship. But what you didn’t also acknowledge was your sons. When the baby boomer generation had kids it grew population faster than any previous historical event.
Not saying you shouldn’t have kids, but I am saying that our population has grown too large for consistent “good ol day” fisheries. We need a WW3 or a bigger covid to knock us back some.
