Max, was a true gentleman and an absolute class act. He even paid for Joe Louis’ funeral. You can see how much he really loved Joe. They don’t make ‘em like that anymore

My father worked as a mechanic and once repaired the car of Max Schmeling. He then drove the repaird car back to his home in Hollenstedt near Hamburg. He told me that he found his gloves (not boxing gloves) in the car and tried them on. They where so big that my father felt like a kid and he had big hands. Max Schmeling was a great guy and for me will always be an idol as a sportsman and a person.
Ich rate jetzt mal, was für eine Marke und Modell...war es ein Opel? Ein Diplomat oder Senator? Schmeling war viele Jahre seines Autofahrerlebens mit Opel verbunden.
What remains is the dignity of guys who were one of a kind. What they achieved lives on as an example we all should celebrate and keep as a treasure of history. Love you guys
Easier said than done, but Max said he never got caught up in the Nazi hysteria. True or not, I do not know, but he stayed classy throughout his 99 years.
Max is known as one of the few people to turn down something Hitler wanted. Not many could do that but since he was so popular and Max himself didn't agree with the Nazi Agenda, he kept himself distant from Hitler. After losing to the Brown Bomber in the 2nd fight so brutally, Hitler had Max sent to the front line paratroopers. This, in an attempt to have Max get killed in combat but due to the old injury that happened in that 2nd fight (which might have saved Max's life, in the end) this caused Max's back injury to end his jumping ability and thus, pulled him from the front lines. History is funnier than fiction, at times. ;) Max & Joe were both amazing and good men, who remained friends to the end of their days.
Max Schmeling was a example of a decent human being and a good friend. A class act indeed. What he did for Joe Louis is truly an act of brotherly love.
Max was a German Fallschirmjager (airborne infantry) during WW2 and participated in many heaby battles, including the nearly suicidal drop on Crete in 1941 where most German paratroopers where outright massacred during the first day of combat. Despite being a servicemember he always refused to join the Nazi Party and even risked his own life to save two Jewish children. The guy served his country and never had any hate in his heart, for anybody. A good man

Lutz became a great friend of Jesse Owens which was very dangerous bfing in nazi Germany. Lutz and max schmelling prove that nazismo was an artificial separtion between brothers, black and white in this case ideology which claimed millones of lives ... In vain.
What Jesse Owens did in the olympics and what Joe Louis did was incredible but I think what Schmelling did WITH Louis was the biggest smash to the face and discrediting of everything Hitler stood for. Their friendship was one of humanities great triumphs.

They never fought in Madison Square Garden. It was Yankees Stadium- both times. In the rematch, Schmeling was seen as a tool of Nazi Germany and Joe was embraced by most Americans as the kind of black person who could represent the country with pride. But Max was never a Nazi.
I read this in 'Boys in the Boat'. I could've sworn the author said MSG, but you're probably right. The notion that Americans would root against an American, just before WWII, surprised me@@stuartperry1047
Not exactly. He was sent on a mission with his paratrooper unit where the Nazis supposed him to die, because he never wanted to be part of their propaganda machine. He even married Anni Ondra, a czech actress. And the regime didn't like it one bit, as she was, of cause, of slavic descent. Well... he survived, as we all know.
He saved two Jewish children during the Kristallnacht, refused to fire his Jewish manager, never was a member of the NSDAP, and was badly wounded during WW2. After the war, he helped out Joe Louis, who was in financial trouble and going through hard times. Schmeling paid for Joe's funeral as well. Truly a class act.

No he did not but they were friends indeed. Mr. Joe Louis had a FULL military honors funeral conducted signed off by president Reagan.

Same with Luz Long and Jesse Owens. They openly displayed their friendship at the 1936 Olympics, in full sight of Hitler.

Lol Schmeling had a funny Jewish manager who also did the Heil Hitler sign and it pissed him off.

Schmeling had a lot of respect and admiration for Joe Louis, probably because of Louis's skill as a boxer.
