You are the first people I’ve heard who have addressed the order of a van build. I was mystified in the beginning trying to logically think about the order of things, afraid to do some modification before another, and I did have to undo mistakes. Sure miss visiting my Canadian neighbors during these COVID times. Hopefully some sanity will be restored so that we can be trusted enough to allow us entry across the borders. Cheers!

Happy new year you lovely people! One thing I learned from digital nomading in Canada and the US is... That every little town has a library! And every library has wifi and actual desktop workspaces.
Of course that's not helpful in the middle of the wilderness but I think libraries are SO underrated by vanlifers!

Funny, that's one thing I look forward to visiting, all the different libraries. But be aware here in Michigan, our libraries were closed for a while, reopened then switched to curbside pickups only, so I don't know if wifi was available during all times. When they first reopened you could not use restrooms.

I'm retired so I don't have to work. And as someone who traveled around North America in my old Volkswagen camper van long before wireless technologies, I don't really worry about WiFi. But there are places that are more crowded today than what I remember. So WiFi is handy. Today, I travel in my Jeep and still sleep in a tent for the most part. But now that I'm older, I would like to carry a cassette toilet for emergencies. I'm thinking about upgrading to a van mainly for the extra room for a toilet, etc. This video provided some very helpful information. Thank you. And I LOVE the French lesson! Good luck with your new van.

When you say WiFi, do you guys really mean a wireless network that you can access freely or are you referring to 4G coverage via your cell phone/4G modem? Living in Sweden we have generally good coverage on 4G and in populated areas it is often possible to find free and open WiFi. In the middle of nowhere, now thats a different story. :-)

I almost never see it mentioned, but make sure the van [new or pre-owned] is totally checked out mechanically. A complete safety check. With an old van it is probably going to be worth flushing and replacing all fluids: engine, automatic or manual transmission fluids, axle oil, wheel bearing grease, flush and fill radiator and replace any suspect hoses, change the brake and clutch fluids, make sure there is plenty of meat on the disk-brake pads or drum brake pads, new air, oil and fuel filters, electrical [perhaps a new vehicle battery, new spark plugs and injector servicing [for diesels], check lights, etc. And be sceptical of tyres. Tyres have a "use-by date" [you can see it on the wall of the tyre, even if they are not worn.
The number of RV's and vans I have seen broken down is amazing.
Especially for full timers. It is better to have a reliable vehicle than a fancy bed, kitchen, toilet etc.
I include new vans in this because it is not all that rare for a new van to have faults. Not now during the pandemic, when many people are buying RV's instead of travelling overseas. But a new RV sitting on a sales lot for 12 months or more, might have some issues [eg tyres again!]
I don't want to discourage anyone, but I think it makes sense to make sure your tiny home is mechanically sound, because if it needs extensive repairs, you will be homeless, perhaps for weeks, while it is in the workshop.
I friend who is a mechanic might help a lot here. Maybe doing some work for free, or for barter, and then you only have to say for the parts.
Lastly, unless you know what you are doing, don't buy an automatic transmission van, especially with high mileage.

There is a male/female attachment for 20, 24 ounce, 1 liter, and 2 liter plastic bottles.. 5 gallon bucket and trash liners work great for # 2's.. Both are great if you are unable wait.. Firstly, Happy New Year! Now, let me just say 'dis about dat' (sorry, I try not to let the French accent rub off, but it's tough) *ahem* I'm thinking back to when we had our Class A motorhome, and some of the things that came up. Once in a while, someone would say, "Whoa, I bet it doesn't get very good mileage!", to which I would inevitably reply, "Well, it gets good mileage for a house", which would usually shut them up. If not, I'd then continue with, "You know, if you can't really afford to go, you should stay home". I think that sort of relates to your comments about being cheap. You're living there. Don't be cheap. For example, it didn't take me long to toss out the el-cheapo mattress that the manufacturer put in, and replace it was a very nice one. So much better. And that was the beginning of the modifications, but I digress.
Now, speaking of that sort of thing (Well, kind of) and the lack of cell or wifi (there was no wifi back at that time) I vividly recall the slight panic of not being able to get a good cell signal (this was in New Brunswick somewhere about a half hour from the N.S. border) because my wife had to go on a scheduled conference call. Do they still have those? Anyway, we got that figured out, she went on her call, and I went to the bed in the back and took a nice nap. (See, there was a mattress reference in there, after all)
And regarding the toilet situation. You have to know how long you can "hold it". I'm not a person who can "hold it", and it's been that way for many, many years. *sigh*. There were a few times when I would simply pull to the side of the road, run to the loo, and do a ....whatever rhymes with "loo". Plus, if you have your own facilities, you KNOW who used it last. Pandemic or no, sometimes you just don't want to use those public toilets. Gah! The Travel Plazas in Europe have really clean washrooms/restrooms/whatever and you will have to pay like, 50 Euro cents, but well worth it. Some of them on this continent are simply gross. Free to use, but disgusting. Oh and, when in Europe and in a city, just look for the Golden Arches if you need to do a McPoop. (Actually, I called it a McSh*t, but it's a family channel).
Always fun to watch you guys on a Sunday morning. Carry On! And bundle up.

    • @vanlifesagas
      @vanlifesagas  3 года назад +1

      Haha,
I think you win the longest comment of all this channel's life. Love your story, and love the point of view: it's not a vehicle, it's a house. It costs something, and you can't go cheap. You need to look at all this from another perspective to allow yourself to invest in that kind of project.
About Wifi (or 4G or LTE), it's getting good pretty much everywhere south of the Can-USA border. However, since Canada is 90% empty, it's kind of hard for those network companies to cover everything. Why would you put an antenna in the middle of a village of 15 people. I heard StarLink from Elon Musk is gonna solve the issue for remote places. Can't wait to try this.
And finally, I'm the kind of guy who doesn't like to hold it either. However, I prefer looking for public washrooms or empty woods rather than having to manage my number twos. But again, it's all preferences here.
      Thanks for your comment!

    Happy New Year guys✨ . Informative list🤔
Following in the footsteps of New Zealand, a growing trend by local authorities (Council/Shire) in Australia now require RV's & vans to be self contained if staying overnight in designated areas, ie: must have a sink, commercially made toilet, water tank, greywater/blackwater tank/s and a lidded refuse container onboard. Only a matter of time before this trend spreads to other countries, so I suggest to futureproof any new van build that these items be incorporated .

I once lived in a bus with my wife, and currently travel mostly solo in my van. You guys touched on it, but it cannot be overstated. THERE IS NO SUBSTITUTE FOR REAL PLUMBING! Showering in a bus or van and dealing with black and gray water should be considered in the context of camping. Even tour buses have rules on pooping on board. Prepare for the emergency, but it is a folly to think you are going to find a "landed" solution to your plumbing habits you have at home. Less is always better living on the road. Find the minimum you can get away with, and make that the top goal. You will get creative out there, and you will be amazed with how little you need.

The van may be gorgeous, ugly, cheap, lavish. The owner is 99.9 prevent of the time a boring semi or full on uncreative person. Someone I don't want to listen to at all. You guys are awesome. You just came across my feed, I am obviously because of my feed, researching the van life experience, and the things you want to know before you start something it’s always good to know. So thank you for taking the time to put the Reality into a fantastical notion. I as a builder, do you have to register with you, that the sequence of events with regard to the build out of any given van life vehicle, in my humble opinion is a bit misguided. As a multi year veteran of the homebuilding industry, caveat emptor that sticks and bricks are substantially different infrastructure wise, but in the last few years the technology between the two has been blending. With that in mind, I am of the mind or opinion, that planning your infrastructure, compliant with your day to, day, user needs as your primary design metric, certainty of infrastructure before you start is critical. Like in the home building, the various trades overlap at different times in the different phases of the build. Surveying, excavation, in ground infrastructure, forms, concrete, framing. Inground infrastructure means, plumbing and electrical, maybe even heating. So the disciplines overlap as you can see. I love almost everything about your video except for the sequence of events that you describe when it comes to doing a build out. That’s actually another video entirely. But seriously you guys are awesome, I’m following you, and I learned some things today. Thank you.

Where to start the conversion was #01??
    - why overcomplicate, just do what I did and throw a mattress together with all your belonging to the back of an empty shell of a van (perhaps not the best approach, but the conversion has been a hell of a good ride).

    • @nandep2149

Yup. Payments on vehicle/van, insurance, registration, safety check (areas have different type), gas, oil changes, other maintenance... and, phone svc., internet/WIFI, other equipment... plus, state park fees, gym membership (optional, but many VanLifers use gyms to shower, etc.), other fees for resources... health care/health insurance, medicines, FOOD, personal hygiene & other necessities...
And more, depending on how simple or complex a system or plan a person has for themselves.
VanLife costs can equal the costs of apartment dwelling. Except, at least a person can explore instead of being stuck in one place. 🙂

first test of whether you can live in a van or not - put a big giant 2x4 (mabye a couple) under your mattress on one side so its no longer level. Try sleeping with your bed at an angle / not level. Lol. It might seem like roads and parking lots are flat and level, but 99% of the time they are NOT!!
