The Chilean Military Dictatorship under Augusto Pinochet
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 2 окт 2024
- Augusto Pinochet was a Chilean military officer who came to power through a coup on September 11, 1973, overthrowing the democratically elected government of President Salvador Allende. Pinochet's military junta ruled Chile from 1973 to 1990, and during this period, Chile experienced a military dictatorship marked by repression, human rights abuses, and significant changes to the country's political and economic landscape. Pinochet established a repressive regime characterized by censorship, limited political freedoms, and strict control over the media. Political parties were banned, and opposition figures faced persecution. The Pinochet regime was notorious for widespread human rights abuses. Thousands of Chileans were subjected to torture, imprisonment, and execution for their perceived opposition to the government. The infamous National Stadium in Santiago was used as a detention and torture center. Pinochet implemented neoliberal economic policies that drastically transformed Chile's economic landscape. These policies, often referred to as the "Chicago Boys" economic model, involved free-market reforms, privatization, deregulation, and reductions in state intervention. While these policies contributed to economic growth, they also increased social inequality. Political opponents and activists were targeted by the government. Many individuals were forced into exile, while others were arrested, tortured, or disappeared. The military junta maintained control through fear and intimidation. Pinochet enacted a new constitution in 1980, which increased the power of the presidency and provided a legal framework for the military government. This constitution remained in effect until it was significantly amended in the 2000s. International pressure and internal unrest eventually led to the transition to democracy in the late 1980s. A referendum held in 1988 voted against Pinochet continuing in power, and in 1990, Patricio Aylwin, a civilian, assumed the presidency, marking the end of Pinochet's military dictatorship.
The legacy of Pinochet's rule continues to shape Chilean society and politics. The country has faced ongoing debates and legal proceedings related to human rights abuses committed during the military dictatorship. While some view Pinochet as a figure who stabilized the economy, others remember him as a dictator responsible for significant human rights violations.

I love history and want to travel, im kinda nervous to go alone but am the only one in my family with a passport. Any advice brother?
@@Crazy_Talk96 Take it small. So go alone to a (new) city nearby. See how you like that. You can also look on RUclips for videos "How to travel alone?" Good luck!
Overall, you did a good job in explaining very shortly about Pinochet's regime. As shown briefly in the video, Allende's goverment can't be left aside when it comes to explain what came during and after the coup of 1973.
Pinochet's regime commited a lot of crimes and it should be condemned. However, most of the popular media (influenced by leftist politics), leave aside what happened during Allende and the crimes commited under his goverment. The chilean society was very divided politically and violence was common in the streets. As said in the video, Allende became very unpopular (and many others supported him regardless of his policies).
The popular media loves to talk how much the CIA was involved in the coup, but they don't mention how Cuba and the Soviet Union supported Allende.
Both governments should be condemned, and Allende, as Pinochet, should not be considered as a hero/martyr (like many leftists love to do).
Thanks for sharing this.
You'd think if the CIA was as powerful as leftists claim, they could've installed Pinochet through electoral politics. But I guess only the Soviet Union and Cuba had that power.
2:04 Even though the photo was taken during the Allende government, seeing Fidel Castro and Augusto Pinochet standing together is so cursed.
Now you mention it!!
Pinochet said that guarding Castro was an order from the president to him as commander, and he was obliged to fulfill it. The curse has absolutely nothing to do with it.
Shows you exactly what they were up against, the murderous Commie thugs of Cuba.
There are a few significant omissions. Allende won about 37% of the popular vote. With no absolute majority, the two top vote winners went to the legislature for it to decide by vote. Allende could not secure the majority of those votes until he signed the 'Statute of Constitutional Guarantees' pledging that he would not subvert the nation's Constitution. Doing so, he won slightly more than 81% of the legislators' vote by winning over the Christian Democrats - a very strong showing. Remember, he could not even secure 50% +1 until he signed the guarantee. This shows how much importance the legislature placed on his signed pledge. He then proceeded to toss the pledge in the rubbish. How so? Expropriations, i.e. the theft of private property. These are far different from nationalisations. By whom? His supporters. Farmland, housing, and private businesses were stolen similar to the land invasions, some of which turn deadly, seen in Zimbabwe and South Africa in recent years.
The government had a legal process to restructure land ownership, one that began in 1962, but Allende's supporters decided to push it beyond lawful methods.
The victims went to the court and won rulings that the seizures were illegal and ordered the return of the property. Allende's government refused to enforce the rulings. In essence, Allende refused to recognise judicial independence through the separation of powers and legitimacy of its rulings. This was a violation of the Constitution. The Supreme Court protested: _'This Court must protest to you [Allende], as it has done numerable times in the past, about the illegal acts of the administrative authorities who are illicitly interfering with the proper exercise of the judicial power, and who are preventing the police force from carrying out criminal sentences duly emanating from the criminal courts, when, according to the laws, these sentences should be carried out by said force without any obstacles. These acts signify a decided obstinacy in rebelling against the judicial sentences and a total lack of concern about the alteration that these attitudes and omissions have produced in the juridical order. All of this no longer means a simple crisis of state under the rule of Law, as was manifested to you in our previous letter, but a peremptory or imminent rupture of the country's legality.'_
His supporters seized private and public housing, some of the latter still incomplete, and demanded their titles. Private homeowners and construction workers, now unable to work and earn their pay, retaliated against the squatters by blocking two highways and seizing a government building to demand Allende's action against the lawlessness.
Another reversal of the guarantee was Allende's backtracking on university autonomy.
This raised a question: how far will his lawlessness go? Who else will be abused?
About three weeks after Allende was inaugurated in November 1970 the Christian Democrats began to voice misgivings about their support of the coalition. In March 1973 Allende lost his legislative coalition partner. On 22 Aug 1973 the 'Agreement of the Chamber of Deputies' resolved:
_'First: To present the President of the Republic, Ministers of State, and members of the Armed and Police Forces with the grave breakdown of the legal and constitutional order of the Republic, the facts and circumstances of which are detailed in sections 5 to 12 above;_
_Second: To likewise point out that by virtue of their responsibilities, their pledge of allegiance to the Constitution and to the laws they have served, and in the case of the ministers, by virtue of the nature of the institutions of which they are high-ranking officials and of Him whose name they invoked upon taking office, it is their duty to put an immediate end to all situations herein referred to that breach the Constitution and the laws of the land with the goal of _*_redirecting government activity toward the path of Law and ensuring the constitutional order_*_ of our Nation and the essential underpinnings of democratic coexistence among Chileans;'_
Both the judiciary and the legislature were now protesting Allende's breach of the Constitution.
Coups by _insiders_ are not undertaken lightly - see the study 'Civil War Spain Versus Swedish Harmony' by Victor Lapuente and Bo Rothstein. Their finding is insiders, i.e. people with skin in the game and who have much to lose, defect [to extra-legal means such as coups] when they conclude it's more dangerous to remain loyal to the government. This is what happened in Spain in '36 and what happened in Chile.
Thanks for sharing your insights. The video simply is not about Allende. See title.
@@HistoryHustle There is much interplay between Allende and Pinochet. Depending on how you see it one justifies the other.
I think a lot of people miss the mark as this coup was plotted, planned and executed by Chileans, not by the CIA who had put their money on another Army General who couldn't deliver. The American influence came after the event. It is also why American business interests failed to get any cheap advantages like they had done in Central America.
I think another point that is missed is the 48% of Chileans who continued to support Pinochet were often victims of the brutal methods of the Communist party prior to the coup, something which we never hear about. This was a reason why the Police, who were constantly restrained from interfering with the crimes being committed by the Communist and Marxist groups, were early participants in the discussions of the eventual coup.
@@tonyleslie530 who was the other army general? Don't think it was Prats.
Thank you for that very interesting post. I was not aware of those details. It completely undermines the notion of brave Allende, the people's choice. That he immediately resiled from his oath of office is very much what is to be expected from a Marxist.
Happy travels may your adventures be full of history

It is true that quite a few pro-US dictatorships managed to do economy well and eventually move to democracy and have the best of 2 worlds. For the anti-US dictatorships it is a very different story.
I think that has a lot to do with the influence the USA and its economy has on Latin America. The USA had the power to let governments fail that did not suit their interests.
Though it only moved to a democracy because of massive riots and threats of another, this time anti-Pinochet coup, and many left-wing reforms were done almost immediately after he gave up the power.
@@makhnothecossack4948 No , wrong , the path to democracy and giving the power back to the people and politicians was already drawn in the Constitution of 1980 ,which stated free elections in 1989 , the communist party refuse vehemently and violently to that decision , they did not want a peaceful transition to democracy , they did not want to be proven wrong and malicious once again
Depends. South Yemen and Syria did relatively well compared to other states in their region of the world.

In Chile the opinion about Pinochet is mixed, because of factors prior to the coup not mentioned in the video, there is a really considerable amount of people who support him, like my grandparents, as a chilean who didn't live this period i don't think i can really have an opinion about this topic

There were two clear options. Either allow Allende to continue his drive to a communist state, with its lawlessness, oppression, damaged economy and many victims, or his overthrow and a return to a free market system. Against such a vicious communist force, the overthrow could not occur without victims and offences. This is not an excuse, but rather an inevitable fact. Pinochet regime ended in a democratic vote without a violent act. Victims were compensated.
It is interesting to note that Chilian communists did not escape to Soviet Union, but rather to capitalist countries like Canada, where they continued to spread their leftist propaganda.
Have there ever been cases of arrests of communist dictators when visiting democratic states
Under what pretense do democratic countries have to arrest Commienist leaders? Arresting the head of state by the country where he happens to be in is an act of war, plain and simple...
@@SpaceXfan2005 To compare Pinochet to Pol or Stalin shows your lack of history knowledge. On the contrary, Allende would likely follow Stalinist methods of oppression and control. Your bias is already shown in perverting Pinochet's name.

This is a thing. I am not a Chikean and have any connection with Chile. If the economy was a reason for THE military coup, no needs for that, Allende could be voted out in a year or two. There must be another reason for the coup (ask CIA). A top of that I have not heard that Allendes regime killed anyone. So that is a verdict.
It was not just the economy, Allende did not follow the laws and the constitution, he ruled by decree much like a dictator. He also broke the "Pacto de garantías democráticas" he signed with the Democracia Cristiana. He closed down opposition media, supported terrorist groups like the MIR, tried to buy the military by putting them in the government (that was how Pinochet got to be the commanding officer), threatened the congress and justice systems, had a paramilitary guard (the GAP). His regime did kill people, one of them is Rolando Matus, a farmer and many others. So if you think he was just a democratic president with all of this, then think again.
Viva el General Pinochet, Salvador de Chile y terror del marxismo.
Congratulation, your video is very objective, much more than some of the videos we can watch here in Chile. Just a final thought that might appear obvious, Pinochet existed as a bloody dictator just because Allende government was a huge disaster for the country in all aspects of daily life!
Pinochet supporters justify the crimes of his goverment by pointing the Plan Z BS and crying about Allende's economic instability that those same right wing groups: the media, radio, press, Truck drivers, Technician and other Industrial unions actively collaborated with the opposition to halt national production several times with the aid of millions of US dollars injected by the Nixon administration
You mean If there had not been a government of Allende, there would not have been a military government of Pinochet.
@@juanr9446 exactly, pinochet dictatorship was a reaction to a government trying to move Chile to the eastern block communism . That is why the biggest part of the population of Chile support at the beginning Pinochet regime, nevertheless this support was declining overtime.

This is deeply skewed: Pinochet also studied a year in the law school, as an example. Yes sir.
I was born and i lived in ex communist country.
I am 46 years old and i know how communism works. Pinochet left highly functional country and economy. Communists left devastated economies.
Pinochet was killing left wing people, but they would also kill many people too if they were allowed to continue their rule.
Thing is Yugoslavia back than (Serbia before WWI and now) was one of world largest producers of damsons, just like Chile. Chileans are our global competitors. After WW2 when communists took power we started losing markets for our dried damsons. Propaganda in my country told people everything bad about Pinochet and Chile. In 1988 one guy showed us packed dried Chilean plumes which he bought in Germany and told us - look how theirs product looks like and look ours. We were amazed how well it was packed and how good those plumes were.
Also, it should be mentioned that Pinochet allowed well educated young people to run the economy - he allowed people better than him to lead, only great leaders would allow that.

Great video again! Congratulations. Recently, more and more people have begun to celebrate some aspects of the Pinochet regime, especially the order and prosperity it brought to Chile. During that period, poverty was reduced from around 45% of the population to under 8%. This did create inequality, as in many Western countries; however, many Chileans owe what they have now to that period of great order and economic growth. You have to understand that back then there was fear of Chile becoming another Cuba. Not sure if you knew, but just a few months before the coup, Fidel Castro spent a month in Chile spreading his Marxist propaganda to the workers' unions. Obviously, the communist utopia was something hard to achieve in a country like Chile with a solid republican tradition. A still controversial and interesting topic, of course. There is a saying: there would not be a Pinochet without an Allende. Congratulations again.

This video is short and of course it cannot cover everything, but there was a lot going on under Allende, and the head of the Army was General Prats who resigned after the Alejandrina Cox incident, what we now call a 'road rage' incident when he fired his gun during a confrontation with Señora Cox, which led to protests by officers' wives against him. He was a supporter of non-intervention by the military in politics, but was replaced by Pinochet. Before the coup of 11th September, the Chilean Congress declared the government of Allende as unconstitutional. There was also the conflict with Argentina over the Beagle Channel, and Argentina came within hours of invading Chile on Christmas Eve 1978 (stopped by US intervention, nominally by the Pope), and this led to Chile strongly supporting the UK in the Falklands War. Galtieri boasted in the aftermath of the invasion of the Falklands that they would finish other business once they had seen off the UK's Task Force, but when a few thousand British Paratroopers, Marines, Guards and Gurkhas turned up, the plans were dropped.
Here in east europe, Pinochet had a bad reputation because we were communist. Talking with chileans I found out that he wasn't so bad. It wasn't perfect but it was not as bad as he is painted in europe. Actually it seems that the military dictatorship in Argentina was way worst than the chilean one. In the cold war it was vey common that everyone had it's own propaganda😊
Argentina was faaaar worse!
It would be interesting to see whether the Allende government could have replicated the very successful Socialist influenced regimes in Northern Europe.
That is the Nordic countries of Denmark Sweden Norway Finland .
Instead they got the Colonia Dignidad.
Those countries are not socialist, neither do they consider themselves socialist. They are free market democracies with a strong welfare state. There is no 'dictatorship of the proletariate' nor is their 'leadership by the Communist Party. Their governments are not influenced by Marxist_Leninist ideology and do not treat sections of the population as 'class enemies'. It really is time for you to educate yourself.
Hardly. As Pinochet said in one of his interviews, “every country needs its own medicine.”
Colonia Dignidad.
Apples and pears. Chile wasn’t headed for social democracy under Allende. It was headed towards Marxism with State control and regulation over daily life, commodities and food supply as well as price controls and State take over of factories. By 1973 Chile was a bloody mess.
Pinochet knew..... Pinochet knew. The answer to 1984 was 1973.
Wrong way round. 1984 is now being introduced in western capitalist countries because of the defeat of the left.
Countries like Belarus Nicaragua Tanzania and the main opposition Russian Communist opposed the recent lockdowns etc imposed by western governments.
Stephan, you should compare the chile coup of 1973 with the 'dismissal' of the elected Whitlam Government in Australia in 1975... Both events caused by foreign intervention into domestic politics.
Interesting. Please explain.
If you’re interested, RUclips has some excellent footage ( interviews & Congressional testimony ) of Christopher Boyce, the US national security contract worker ( TRW’s ‘ black vault ‘, specifically ) who was arrested, charged with espionage, & convicted, being sentenced to 40 years gaol time in 1977. He sold details of CIA interference in Australia, & any information on the US - run Pine Gap facility near Alice Springs, to Soviet intelligence in Mexico City. Sean Penn, Sir David Suchet ( Poirot ! ) & Timothy Dalton all starred in the rather good 1985 film about Boyce, ‘ The Falcon & the Snowman’..
Totally unfair comparison. The one in Chile involved guns and tanks and planes. The one in Australia was mostly peaceful and all the successive Australian prime ministers all learnt how not to be radical and financially irresponsible. Whitlam was dismissed purely due to Australian domestic politics and his supporters never admitted that his rule was a disaster, and blamed foreign forces instead for his dismissal.

@@Thewolfans the definition of worker class is obvious. You can read it in the Enciclopedya Britannica.
Stefan - excellent short history as usual but.....I take issue with your claim that Chile economy improved during Pinochet regime. If social inequality increased then the economy was a failure. It therefore did not improve the quality of life of the great majority of Chileans. It was in fact an economic disaster imo :)
that is true for many Chileans the economy during Pinochet and after was a disaster in certain groups of the society ,because opportunity dress in working gear you can take a horse to the water but you make that horse to drink that water
Mi general 🇨🇱❤️
The USA brought him to power, and they pushed him out as well.
You think Chileans don't have agency?
Sure the US had influence but with the rise of the dictatorship they weren't the deciding factor.
true
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😃😃
Lot of Pinochet supporters in the comments. Their excuses and remarks about Allende are incredibly transparent.
I am surprised. Why do you think they support Pinochet.
Is simple, Allende did not follow the laws and the constitution, he ruled by decree much like a dictator. Pinochet regime's was really soft, not at all a brutal dictatorship as so many left media tries to portrait, the coup saved Chile.
@@HistoryHustle History pretty much has proven that Leftists are terrorists? lol
God bless Pinochet! Chile's greatest leader
Really? Maybe you should be in that cemetery. Or were you one doing the putting them in the cemetery? Either way you're a bellend.
He was a criminal against humanity. Shame on you.
@@sage6211 He was just a criminal. Chili wasn't involved in any war. Unless you count the war he waged against his own people.
@@sage6211 Yet if he was Stalin or Lenin you or any of the other communist leaders that commit mass murder you praise him.
How can you support a fascist american puppet, long live Allende
At age 57, with my country destroyed to ashes by communist cancer, i say: Pinochet was the lesser evil.
I think China is on course to be the most powerful country in the World.
China is doing OK.

Economically, China is 1000% turbo capitalism.
The communist dissasters in Latin America: Cuba and Venezuela, have produced destruction and missery.
