"The Other 9/11": Ariel Dorfman on 50th Anniversary of U.S.-Backed Coup in Chile That Ousted Allende

  • We look at the 50th anniversary of what is sometimes called the "other 9/11" - the U.S.-backed coup in Chile, when General Augusto Pinochet ousted President Salvador Allende and inaugurated almost two decades of brutal military rule. Allende died in the presidential palace on September 11, 1973, marking the end of Chile's first socialist government. During Pinochet's military dictatorship, more than 3,000 people were disappeared or killed, and some 40,000 more were tortured as political prisoners as Chile remained a close partner to the United States during the Cold War. "We're still living in some sense under the shadow of Pinochet, and of course we're living under the gigantic light … of Salvador Allende," says renowned Chilean writer Ariel Dorfman, who served as a cultural adviser to Allende from 1970 to 1973 before going into exile following the coup. His latest novel, "The Suicide Museum", explores the mystery around Allende's death and whether it was a suicide or murder.

After America's 9/11 there was a widespread headline: "Why do they hate us?"
Chile's 9/11 and the events like it give you part of the answer.

"Hate" is a strong word to use for people in Latin America.
If it was hate coming from South America you would have terrorists attacks done by Chileans, Argentinians, Brazilians and more. Ironically one of the largest Chilean diasporas is located in the USA. I think it's more disappointment coming from a country that was supposed to have the same values of emancipation, liberty, justice and despise for imperialism.
      But i suppose time changes...

Liberal modernists and feminists will feign outrage, but their moral system is what creates this situation.
Liberal principles of individual choice, female empowerment, and destruction of patriarchy create a society of people who have no family to take care of them in their old age.
The liberal feminist solution to this problem is to create more welfare programs. What this means is that they want the elderly to live alone in what are essentially pods, their only human interaction being with "care" takers to check if they're still alive once a week.
Let me put it like this. The only human solution is for the elderly to be surrounded by loving family in their old age. The only way to get that is patriarchy, gender roles, and other limitations on individual freedom. But the liberal mind cannot allow any of that. So the elderly will continue to suffer and liberal feminists and modernists will continue to pretend like they care about humanity.

Throughout my life, I have been in and out of Chile. I know how the upper, middle class and let's include the arriviste, think. Yes, it is a left versus right struggle but over there, it's mainly a class struggle. The class system is so deeply ingrained that it would be safe to say that there are two Chiles. The aversion to socialism by the well-to-do was ingrained in the social system. Of course, the powers that be, beyond our borders took advantage of this fact and became victorious because of it. I am a centrist (not neutral) therefore it allows me to see things without the blinders of extremism. The elimination of Allende and the progressive implementations of Pinochet's "Chicago Boys" have altered the Chilean identity. Chile has been a commercial hub where the love of money overtakes any social mores that made Chile unique. I grieve for what Chile has become.

What Uncle Ari calls " the dictators " and what I " lovingly " call the Blake Association doesn't care one bit about how " a- political " you are, how loyal to Soros and Co you are- if it suits their purpose they're gonna turn on you on a dime. I need them to really understand that. In 2013 before the coup I was literally doing " What Is In My Bag " on RUclips. Didn't " save " me or my loved ones.

17:18 - I have to say that I think the obsession with whether Allende committed suicide or was murdered by the attackers of La Moneda is *bizarre*. Why is it dishonorable if Allende killed himself rather than be taken alive (as I believe he did)? Pinochet forces, before completing the coup, allegedly offered Allende safe passage to Cuba and he refused. One might argue (though I wouldn't) that exile under those circumstances would have been cowardly. But how can his determination to remain in the Palace until the very end be cowardly? It seems like a macho or even a Catholic thing to hold him in contempt for reacting to a hopeless situation by taking his own life. In any case, the important thing is the way Allende lived, not the circumstances of his death. For me, Allende was a hero, and whether his enemies killed him or whether he did the job himself is totally irrelevant.

The interference in Chile was clearly a mistake on multiple levels. However, the magnitude of damage was far less than that caused by the NATO-led (US financed) intervention in Libya in 2011. Twelve years later Libya remains a failed state by any measure. Chile has an ex-pat community that keeps the Allende coup out in the global public’s eye, but in terms of scale and fatalities it is among the least costly compared to interventions in Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, Haiti, etc.

    • @blackeyedsusan727
      @blackeyedsusan727 8 месяцев назад

The "interference" in Chile cost millions of lives, directly and indirectly over decades to the present day. It forever changed Chile's destiny, and also further destabilised the entire LatAm region. The U.S. coup against this democratically-elected, pacifist president waa not the first of the U.S.' global atrocities, but rather a continuatuon of the horrors it had visited on LatAm alone (!) since the Monroe Doctrine.
In sum, it's not a Victimhood Olympics. Regardless, every instance of U.S. greed, mayhem, and murder that has plagued those countries that have something of interest to the U.S. power base has been tragic and has lasting consequences for all of us.

This inspired President Reagan to economize and take away a vegetable in the American school lunch program. He said ketchup was a vegtable so they didn't need another vegetable. Actually, tomato is designated as a fruit !

He also created socialist militias and disarmed right wing organizations, controlled emigration under his disastrous economic management, suppressed legal assembly in the public while allowing leftist groups to assemble with arms, nationalized many industries illegally, and suppressed popular protests against his actions. He is no means someone that should be celebrated. If he stayed in power, venezuela would've become chile's destiny. pinochet should be reprimanded for all of his targeting against political rivals, but he is no where near as terrible as allende was.

To understand America is to understand this coup. America feels more and more foreign to me where everyone is out for themselfs and material gain is all that is offered. It is as if it is a lost soul.
