- With the introduction of Pokemon Home on the Nintendo Switch and mobile devices, the process of transferring Pokemon has become even more tedious - but what does it take to transfer your old favorites? Today we're going to find out how easily you can transfer Pokemon from every generation to Pokemon HOME and Sword/Shield. This video took a lot of time and effort to put together, so I'd really appreciate it if you shared this with a friend. If you have any suggestions for the next video, leave it in the comments below! Have a great day :)

I’m doing Gen 3-5 to Gen 6-7 now and it’s already a kafkaesque nightmare. For some reason you need two separate apps, an internet connection, an tool that normally costs money (free this month only) and you can only transfer one box at a time. It only reads one specific box in BWB2W2, and since I have Black (and not B2W2), I have to move Pokémon one by one into this box. For each new box, you have to remove and insert both games again so you’re basically constantly going back and forth between multiple apps, changing which game is in the 3DS, and which Pokémon box you are looking at.
It almost makes me want to go back to having to play mini games to transfer my Pokémon.
That mini-game required you to have a second console...
Yep... in my case it's OK because I have an old DS and 3DS (sufficient hardware to go gen 3->7), but if anyone has the "wrong" kind of DS/3DS then they'll need to buy a whole nother system...
It’s not free only for this month because if it was than the gts would not work or would have never added it
@@starcrash4692 I am talking about Poke-Transporter and Pokemon Bank, which are separate from Pokemon Home (which is not free this month or in the foreseeable future). I know, it's confusing for me, too. I don't have SwSh so I only need Transporter and Bank to move my Pokemon around the DS & 3DS games
yo i did this last year moving from gen 3 to bank a living dex of gen 1-5 mons and it was fucking terrible. tfw you check bank for the 3rd time because you can't remember what step you're on and don't want to lose a whole fucking box of pokemon you transferred from LG/FR.
it takes WAAAAY more concentration than it appears so you can't even really do something else in the mean time like you can when grinding. there were so many times i was like
whoops
wrong game
whoops did i use transporter yet?
whoops loaded bank before transporter and the 3ds is slow as shit so i forgot and did it again
whoops is it time to reorganise boxes again?
i feel you fam
wasn't even worth it cause a month later they announced national dex being removed smh.
that said my shiny lopunny in omega ruby from the shiny charm was... spent hrs hunting him so.
16:50 the reason you can't transfer back is not due to flags, but because each pokemon in your storage is it's own individual file, with each game they upgrade the version of the pokemon's file, so when you've transferred to bank it's upgraded to the gen 7 version and thus the older game won't be able to read it's data anymore.
Why not create a way to downgrade it then before sending it back?
@@friendlyanomaly6109 I have to wonder if this is how they’ll treat Pokemon from Gen 9 onward, considering that HOME updated Pokémon with moves and the like for BDSP and Legends. No way to know until the update hits though.
@@XanderIsALoserI've been thinking about this and I actually think that they'll be able to go between Gens 8 and 9 with no real issues.
You can move Pokemon between XY and ORAS as long as they don't learn any moves/items exclusive to ORAS.
Same thing applies to S/M. You can't transfer exclusive Pokemon, moves, or items in S/M to Gen 6... But you can move a Gen 6 Pokemon to and from Gen 6 and 7 as long as they don't get an exclusive move/item.
The files only get changed (upgraded in your words, which isn't necessarily true) when you transfer them to Home, hence why the move is permanent.
@@Dad_Shoes they kinda can…. Hisuian forms have a dex entry in Sw/Sh, but they are transfer only… their moves though, many PLA moves are illegal
This has aged well lol. These pokemon games have increased at least two or three times in value
Yep, once the pandemic hit gamestop dropped most of their ds/3ds support and they basically regulated the prices of ds/3ds stuff, which kept them near original retail value. Now, they price based on ebay, rather than ebay pricing based on them.
Nowadays I would happily pay $50-$60 to get something like the Platinum or B2W2. Crazy at how fast the market was inflated.
These prices are total BS. Pokémon games are some of the best selling games of all time so there’s absolutely no reason they should be anywhere near original retail price or even higher. People just need to stop buying Pokémon games at those inflated prices.
Don't forget that Pokemon bank is now inaccessible unless you had it before nintendo shut down the 3ds store, Hate nintendo sometimes fml
A few errors:
- Bank doesn't automatically have a free month when you download/use it for the first time; it only had a free month after its launch and after Home's launch. Outside of these times there is no trial period and you have to pay to use it.
- Home doesn't have any free-month trial or promotion; it just has a "Basic" plan and a "Premium" plan. Basic is always one box only and doesn't allow Bank transferring (though it does allow Let's Go transferring and SwSh transferring). Premium is $3/month or $16/year and gives you 200 boxes and Bank transferring.
- Nintendo Switch Online is not required to use Home.

Hi wattson gamer
I actually went through the trouble of doing all of this. Granted, I did it as the years went on, but I do have some Pokémon from gen 3 and the other gens that are in Home/Sword.
I did this around 2015 and it was so tedious just to move my Pearl Pokémon, black Pokémon’s, and Heartgold Pokémon to Pokémon X. It took so many hours
I have Pokemon in my PokeBank all the way from Pokemon Ruby, to include my starter (a Blaziken).
@PhillipMargrave If you have all the working parts already, make SURE your Pokemon are stored on Pokemon Stadium or Pokemon Stadium 2 until you can move them up to the new games. I was barely able to save my shiny Eevee before the battery in my Silver version died, mere HOURS later, due to storing it in a box on Stadium 2. But if you don't already have all that stuff, buy the cart dumper ASAP and mod a spare 3ds, it's cheaper than any of that N64 crap and you will need to get this stuff anyway. My roommate's Blue and my Yellow still work, but we fear them stopping any day now.

Please explain how that justifies charging for something that was previously free for two out of three consoles. Especially in Nintendos case where the online never got better, the cloud saves aren't allowed for games that really need them and the only other benefit is (S) NES games, most of which people don't care for.

Raphnet also sells his N64 to PC USB controller converter. It's main purpose is to connect your N64 controller to a PC, but with his drivers and tools, you can read anything from the controller's expansion pak directly to the computer, including the N64 Transfer Pak.
So, if you already have the N64 Transfer Pak (came with Pokemon Stadium) and a controller with your First Generation game, you can use this adapter to dump your save file to your PC. AND you have an N64 controller for your computer! :)

Congratz on 200K subs, thank you for all the helpfull guides and intresting challenges^^.
Congratulations on 200k Johnstone!
I appreciate that they let us do this and the flavor text of the Pokémon traveling through time and space to be with us is cool but I’d rather just catch the Pokémon I want in the newer games and give it the same nickname I gave it in the original game.
For example, I had a Bulbasaur named Coldsaur in Fire Red but Professor Sexymore just straight up gives you a Kanto starter in XY so I just chose Bulbasaur and also named it Coldsaur then headcannoned it being the same Bulbasaur I had in Fire Red lol. Having your own headcannons in Pokémon is always fun, plus this way is just more convenient for me.
The only problem is the new one might not share the same things like gender, nature, IV’s, capture location, flavor text, etc. And it’s harder if it’s rarer or a shiny, but depending on how you play the game, most of those things can be pretty negligible and they’re usually just things you check out once then never look at again. I did hear that you can change IV’s and natures in swsh though so at least those 2 things can be fixed.
I can usually just get all the Pokémon I want in the newer games, and if not, I’ll just wait for a distribution event or trade it or cheat it in or something or I can just distract myself with the new ones lol. The only reason I would transfer a Pokémon form an old game is for the sentimental value/attachment/nostalgia/bragging rights/experience/collection/novelty of it.
That being said, I love that we can do this! It really makes the games feel much more connected and sort of harmonic??? in a way. I don’t know of any video game franchises that are as intertwined and interconnected as this one. Heck, I might just transfer my old black 2 team to Pokémon Home. The idea of showing off my Pokémon to my friends on my phone is pretty appealing to me. Awesome video as always btw

Yeah that video discouraged me quite hard...
For quite some time I wanted to do "generational living dexes", so one with the Gen 3, one with the Gen 4 and so on.
I do have almost everything needed but transferring them up is going to kill me.
Oh and Im gonna catch EVERYTHING with regular Pokéballs and deliberately wont use Colosseum for the Johto starters as the icing on this fucked up cake
Just a regular living dex (without trading online) is much more of a challenge than it looks. You end up realizing there are random Pokemon you never cared about (Nosepass in my case) that the only way you can access is through swarms or the Johto Safari Zone or some other convoluted obscure method. So you go to the ends of the earth and back for a rock with a big nose that you never wanted in the first place.
You: I want to do a challenge!
Also you: Ugh this challenge is so hard why don't they make it easier.
@@StarkMaximum Its not necessarily hard just... tedious.
Only using the main games and regular Pokéballs is on me, but the stupid catching games for transfering up in Gen 4&5 are gonna be a pain in the ass.
You can get the Johto starters using Island Scan in Gen 7 IIRC
You won't be able to do it legitly for Gen 3. How will you get a legitimate Deoxys/Jirachi/Mew without hacking the game in Gen 3?

AFAIK, you can indeed transfer data from the GBC and GBA using the GBC link cable as you can boot GB/C games into the GBA and trade or battle without issues. The reason you cannot transfer Pokémon from Gen 1-2 to Gen 3 games is the size and structure of the Pokémon "files". Best regards!
You cant transfer them because Special Atk and Def were combined as the Special stat in Gen 1&2. IVs worked differently as well and abilities didnt exist.
It was just too much at the time to deal with thats why its not possible
@@blackcorona07 No, it's because they used the new Personality Value system in RSS instead of using only the IVs to dertermine certain things. PV weren't around in Gen 1&2. The Sepcial-Stat was splitted in Gen 2 already.

Congrats on 200k
After collecting every game in the mainline franchise I can't mention how frustrating it is that I can't transfer from the original physical copies of GSC. One of the carts has a shiny mew and yet I can't transfer it.
I did all this last year while Ribbon Mastering a Farfetch'd (actually inspired in part by your Forretress video, lol) and seeing the whole process laid out again makes me kind of worried for the future:
For all the previous generations, the transfer methods are future-proofed; even though it was 2019, I could still connect my GBA to my Gamecube, or send Pokemon from one DS to the other, or whatever. As long as hardware like batteries or anything don't fail on me, I could go do it all over again right now, and do it anytime I want for years down the road.
But in gen 6 with Pokemon Bank, even though I will admit it's extremely convenient, it's also a service that could end sometime in the future, similar to the Wii Shop's closure making Pokemon Ranch unavailable. We don't really know how long the service will exist, and it's quite likely they simply won't provide any other method once it does.
I dunno, something about that makes me feel sad. I have to wonder if maybe they could have made Bank a downloadable program with a one-time purchase fee or something instead.
Prophetic

I subscribed because you earned that one guy, I have done all of this transferring I am a seasoned pokemon vet and it's not a easy process but you are right this is exactly how the "legal" way is to do all the transferring up from the older versions withought cheating or trading from foreign countries to get legendaries that aren't available to US
I should mention that some of what he said about Pokémon HOME was incorrect: The service does NOT have a free trial, and instead has a free “basic” plan that has the same features as he said. Also, there is no restriction on what systems can use HOME.
I was little confused when does Home has a free trial? I don't think there was but they should be lol

@@Goro_Maj1ma Not semantics. There’s a big difference between a free trial and a basic version.
The alternative version of going from gen 1/2 hard cartridges to gen 8/home is to have ez carts for gba and gbc, with sds and load emulators in. Use a Mega Memory cartridge to back up your real game, load that save on the emulator card, pull that sd, load the mons sorted in am editor on pc and ensure they have reasonable g3+ stats/abilities/ivs, important them to a g3 emulator's save, put that on an sd and to a gba cartridge and either then trade to real g3 copied or just send them to gen 4 directly the normal way

I specificly bought White to transfer my Mons from Emerald to Sun when it released. That was a nightmare
Good lord what 2020 did to the prices of these games and consoles.
Hey John, congrats on hitting 200K subs!
I did the whole process. In fact, this is how I first learned about Johnstone's RUclips page. His original "how easy is it to transfer" videos were very helpful in getting my entire collection to Gen 7.
While I had a lot of the games already, I will admit I spent probably a good 400-500 bucks to get all the games I wanted. And I spent a year (alongside a full time job) getting every single Pokemon. I played through Red/Gold/Emerald/LeafGreen/Platinum/HeartGold/Black/White2/X/OmegaRuby/Sun/UltraMoon/Let'sGoPikachu to get all 807 Pokemon and some PKGO to get Meltan/Melmetal.
Seriously. It took me a year. Biggest frustrations were definitely trying to catch all the 1% encounters in Gen 2, all the unskippable cutscenes in Gen 7 and the sheer number of Pokemon in Gen 5.
A lot of money.
Congratulations on 200k subscribers!!!!
actually another large reason for not being able to transfer from gen 2 to gen 3 is due to the overhaul of the dv (now iv) system
Great video. You covered the process of transferring Pokemon from Gen 3 all the way to Pokemon Home accurately, however you actually can't transfer all Pokemon to Sword and Shield from Home as there is no National Dex available in those games. You can only transfer those listed in the Galar dex. Apologies if someone already mentioned this.
Quick question, back in the day they gave a lucky few (20 people) a magikarp that knew the move dragon rage, if you were to transfer that pokemon to sword or shield, would you have to make magikarp unlearn that move?
Christopher Greer no, hm’s are moves like fly, Tm’s are moves like dragon rage
@@lextatertotsfromhell7673 He's referring to the fact that Dragon Rage is a move that didn't make the cut into SwSh - the move will be unusable. However, you can still transfer it from Home into SwSh, you just won't be able to use the move. You won't need to delete the move either, you just won't be able to use it in battle.
Anyone else notice that the background has like 6 Silvallys in a row?
All the different types
Congrats on 200k John!
