How Roe v Wade Fell and What Comes Next with Jodi Kantor

  • Since long before Roe v Wade enshrined a federal right to choose in 1973, abortion has been one of the most contentious issues in American life. On June 24, 2022, the Supreme Court overturned Roe with their decision in Dobbs v Jackson Women’s Health Organization, marking a new peak in the political energy and emotion surrounding abortion. Katie’s guest today, New York Times journalist Jodi Kantor (who won a Pulitzer for her Me Too reporting), has been behind some of the most exhaustively sourced and in-depth reporting on just how Dobbs unfolded.
As Jodi tells us, in many ways, SCOTUS’ Dobb’s decision was shocking. The case started as a long-shot ban on abortions after 15-weeks in Mississippi. But a series of events made it one of the most monumental in American history: an even more controversial case from Texas coming along at the same time, Justice Ginsberg’s death, and an unprecedented leak of the decision in Dobbs that some feel affected Justices’ ability to deliberate fully. It’s easy to imagine this going differently if even one of those things changed.
Roe’s reversal could be interpreted as the triumphant fruition of 50 years of conservative efforts or as an issue that could swing voters to liberal candidates; there’s evidence for both. Entering an election year, the transparency Jodi brings to one of our most hallowed institutions-one that may face serious tests this year-is unmissable.

Also now we can't afford anymore Conservative Judges on the bench, one reason enough to keep Biden in office.

I can't fatham that we are in the year 2024 and a country such as the USA had a say over a womends decision regarding her body. A decision that should only be discussed between her and her Doctor, not the courts ... on any level! Our country is moving backwards and it is so very scary to me!!

Thank you Katie and Jodi. I look forward to many more reasonable and insightful discussions. I would prefer some more discussion about the justices and their personal influences on their decisions.

I feel sad for young women today, the struggle they’ll be up against not just for unwanted pregnancies but for life and death pregnancy issues. Women need to fight to have this right restored!

I don’t need to know how a bunch of right wing Christian nationalists on the court came to the decision because we know they were courted with gifts and lobbied by other right wing Christian nationalists. You can’t deny America is no longer flirting with the authoritarian fascism leanings it has long desired by the ultra wealthy capitalists. Male dominance is usually the issue in many countries. I just thought we as women had progressed and we were the enlightened ones after years of struggle. To be given up so easily and completely is a shock. I don’t want to be American anymore I’m ashamed of us. To dis invest in half of your population will come back to bite them.

Check out Senator Sheldon Whitehouse’s work regarding the big scheme within the Supreme Court. He is one of my all time favorites, too. He would make an amazing person to interview, Katie! Thank you Jodi, for your candid interview.

We have to keep talking about this Supreme Court and the abortion decision they have foisted on women. And honestly we need to pay attention to these justices, abd the presidents who nominate them, who seem to think it's their place to create law in the conservative ideological vision.

Ginsburg COMPLETELY tainted her legacy. Her ego- maybe a hint of narcissism, cause me to make a face every time I hear her name. She should have resigned that seat on the court. But no, all the GIRL BOSS! memes went to her head.

Not sure if you know the history behind Ginsburg she fought for men’s rights. Also, she fought for men to get spousal support if they have guardianship of their children. She was an amazing woman. She was definitely a woman beyond her times.

“Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations.”
    -Jeremiah 1:5 KJV
“And Mary arose in those days, and went into the hill country with haste, into a city of Juda; And entered into the house of Zacharias, and saluted Elisabeth. And it came to pass, that, when Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost: And she spake out with a loud voice, and said, Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb.”
    -Luke 1:39-42 KJV
“For thou hast possessed my reins: thou hast covered me in my mother's womb. I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well.”
    -Psalm 139:13-14 KJV
"...Sirs, what must I do to be saved? And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house. "-Acts 16:30-31 KJV

We are so thankful and grateful to God that Roe v Wade was overturned and referred to the states as it should be. Abortion is divisive and controversial because it involves ending a human life. Everyone can agree upon that. But some people believe or claim they believe that taking human life is "Okay" or that it's their "right" to end life. But thank God many more people do NOT believe that and will not give in to those that do. It's either murder or it's not. Plain and simple.
