Mrs H 🇬🇧 .. I remember in 1977 on the Queens Jubilee meeting Jack..I was 10 yrs old & didn't realise how famous he was or what a good player he was... My older brother's loved him BUT they knew more about football than I do today... I remember him ( At lakes estate Redcar ) willing me on to win all the activities of that day...I didn't do bad but I know today I was 💩 BUT he praised me and even though I won very little Jack made me feel I was the biggest winner ever...He gave me the confidence to believe in myself & not to focus on my failures... He was so great & I thank him for his attention to me & his encouraging words.. He made me make a stand & fight throughout my early dark days..Thank you Jack & RIP...You made a difference to many lives including mine...❤🏐

@@TheLastAngryMan01 I believe that was a quote from the Duke of Wellington when asked if he considered himself Irish or English after he won the battle of Waterloo 😂😂,
Ultimately I believe 6 of the starting 11 players who got Ireland to the world cup quarter final in 1990 we're born and raised in England and 1 from Scotland,
Jack Charlton used to put posters up in the dressing rooms of English clubs saying if you have any Irish grandparents please contact me that says it all really,
The Irish born players most of them weren't good enough so jack got the English player's who weren't good enough for England to play for the Republic, smart manager and good decision

1992 was the time when the Irish were at their strongest. How they didn’t make Euro 92 is anyone’s guess. Only 8 teams in it, mind. Well. 6. England and Scotland might as well have stayed at home.

@@lukesenior4702 Agreed. Failure to qualify for Euro 92 boiled down to two things IMO: 1) Ray Houghton missing a couple of sitters at Wembley; 2) Packie Bonner messing up for two goals against Poland.
Two things that Irish side lacked were a pacy forward and a decent goalie. It was unfortunate for Jack that Shay Given wasn’t born ten years sooner.

@@TheLastAngryMan01 Valid points, and I just think with more success comes expectation and sometimes it appeared they weren't always happy playing his particular style? .Now the Rugby team have somehow embraced not being the 'underdog' but they have less competition to contend with!

The last of the great football characters player & manager. Now its all large chqs & when a manager takes a small provincial town (Leics) to win their top league & then next season struggles in lower half position of same league & gets the sack because millions of pounds is at stake. Thankyou & Goodbye. This is how football now operates & I want nothing to do with it. The Championship, yeah yeah DIV 2! aint much better. The third & fourth tiers is were the real British football heart still beats. I wouldn't wish my team to be promoted from the third tier as the top 2 divs just ruins little-ish clubs. Sad but true. Going Downnn Going Downnn Going Downnn & Stay!
