    Thank you for this video, it works! Replacing a $0.69 light switch beats replacing a $75-$250 ceiling fan any day. They don't make light switches like they used to though. These new skinny ones don't seem to be as robust as the old fat full sized ones. Now I just need to find a good deal on a white light switch. They were $3.99 compared to $0.69 for the cream colored model. Keep up the great work!

    Thank you for this video, I was going to initially replace the wires, but I will try this first and hopefully fix the lights. One question though, my sniffer is giving me a beep on the switch when it is turned on and the light fixture has been tested and works. But when I try to switch on the lights they don't come on. Why is that?

    • @TheHandymanToolbox
      @TheHandymanToolbox  7 лет назад +2

      Hello, thanks for the question. Having currrent to the switch does not constitute a working switch. Yo'll have to do a continuity test with an ohm meter to determine if the switch is good. Great video, thank you for posting. I'm struggling with a chandelier that I rewired to add a swag. I can get the fixture to light, but can't turn it off at the dimmer switch (it is new). At the fixture I have black to black + the fixture wire, white to white + fixture wire. I capped and set aside a red wire (no fan as part of the fixture). At the dimmer (the only control) I have black to black, red to red. There is a second "flagged" red for a 3 way. I have an unattached white from the wall that is capped. What simple thing did I miss? Frustrating, because I hung the chandelier 10 years ago without a problem. Oy.

    • @TheHandymanToolbox
      @TheHandymanToolbox  7 лет назад +2

      OK, at the dimmer, attach the red from the dimmer to the white from the light fixture. Keep the black the same.
      You are going to ignore (cap off) the red wire in the wall and in the fixture box all together.

    • @TheHandymanToolbox
      @TheHandymanToolbox  5 лет назад +2

      Yes, you can check the circuit breaker in the box first to see if it tripped, then reset it by turning the breaker completely off, then back on. Next turn the power off at the same breaker, then check the connections on the bathroom and hallway switches to see if they are secured. Sometimes they can be "piggy-backed" from one switch as a power source to the next light switch. Let us know how it worked out for you. More info. The voltage going out of the box directly into the fixture is 117.9, same voltage is also coming out of the switch up to the light. Is the, less than 120 voltage, a problem? Right now I have a receptacle hooked into the switch. 117.9 going into the receptacle, but a small lamp plugged into the receptacle will not work. I am stumped.

    • @TheHandymanToolbox
      @TheHandymanToolbox  3 года назад +1

      Hi KK, Yes the red wire is the common wire between the two switches. So the neutral (white wires) are tied in together (not connecting to the switches), the red wire is connected between the two switched as a common, the green (ground) and the black wires (power) are connected to each switch independently and separately. Each switch will have only have a green, red and black wire attached. Let me know if you have any other questions!

      i figured it out. they electrician came out and gave my mom a quote of $200 to change the simple light switch and she said NO,,so when he put it back together he didnt wire it the way it was. so i came along and put in a new switch the same way i took it out, but only after looking at the wiring of the other switch did i find he wired them wrong. so i corrected the wiring and the new switch worked as it should. i blame the crooked electrician for trying to cheat my mom for a 15 minute job, she even had to give him $79 just to come out and look at it. thanks for the reply!

    Enjoyed the video. Question about testing the switch while the switch is still in the circuit. Since you have 120V across the switch when the switch is off, wouldn't you have 0V across the switch when the switch is on and operating properly? Wouldn't an indication of any voltage across the switch when the switch is on be an indication of a bad switch? Also, couldn't you check the ohms across the switch with the switch removed from the circuit? A good switch should read infinite resistance when the switch is in the off position & very close to zero resistance when it is in the on position. I think it would be easier this way instead of pulling down the outside light fixture.

      Technically you should have all receptacles and outlets grounded. A word of caution, please refer to a licensed electrician for an inspection of your current electrical system to make sure there are no hazards. one thing about electricity, it never says I'm Sorry!

      Turn off the power to that switch first. Pull the switch from away from the outlet box and inspect the connections. One of the wires is not installed correctly. Check to see if the screws are snug. Wrap the switch with electrical tape to safeguard from shorting out when/if touching sides of metal box or other wires, such as the naked ground wire. Check with extreme cation!

      Not always the best practice. Better to have a ground attached to the "hardware". Let us know how it worked out for you. Thank you, be sure to subscribe and click the notification "bell" now for our next home improvement/home repair DIY videos!

    My problem is that after testing the receptacle that reads hot, the light does not work. The bulb is ok in another outlet. I changed the receptacle like you did but nothing will work. Comments?

    I need advice if any one can help: I have two light switches but only one turns on the outside light but the second one doesn’t do anything I don’t know what it goes to I tried all plugs but can’t figure it out. Any advice in how to fix it?

      No telling. FYI: Lights and outlets are on separate circuits and are not related. Yet there is a rumor that that they are still not talking since they did got their wires crossed some years ago. LOL Thank you for commenting. Please subscribe, like and share the DIY love!

    What I do on outside light connections is instead of taping around the wire nuts which still I do, but before doing that is I twist the copper wires tightly together, I squirt a dab of silicone into the wire nut & twist them on so that they insulate them from moisture. But be sure you twist the wires together before you use the silicone on them so as not to insulate the flow of electricity! In other words if so you squirt the silicone into the nut without first twisting the wires tightly together the silicone will coat each wire separately breaking good connection. Don't do that!
