I dropped out of school to help my family, and for someone who is dying to study and work for a career your channel is a life saver. Maybe someday I will get enough saved up that I can go to college. Fingers crossed.
Don't worry. It's not whether you can afford it, it's where you can get the best deal. Since it's free on here, that's the best deal. You just saved yourself $100,000.
I'm sorry, I thought it had something to do with the price of studying in your country. Good luck with all that. Luckily there are many lectures on youtube, but still good luck
Thank you so much for the lecture. I am taking Cultural Anthropology this summer and your lecture definitely helped me be motivated for the class to be complete and giving me the confidence to register for the class as well. I appreciate it.
interesting so no zzzzzz from me. I am 60 years old and I am going back to school to get a degree in Anthropology this was good...not going to school for more money or anything like that I went to college when I was young and majored in Business that is what I liked at the time....I thought but I really wish I had majored in Anthropology because this is a study I love...more please.
All the best Brenda. That's what I am doing currently ,I am 32 and a stay at home mom.I was always curious about people and cultures.I cant afford College but I hope watching these lessons and reading more books will atleast help me understand the subject
I find western culture fascinating the most, however even if I'm learning a lot and I probably know a lot of anthropology/philosophy/psychology that it's natural for me to study that I absorb information quickly, it's not the best field for me to want to study. I still can't help not to observe though. In the USA because it's multicultural, you can see people's culture everywhere you go, so I'm learning everyday. But so far I'm observing the western culture the most.
Traditional values refer mainly to circles and curves which reflect in their Art, the way they meet and often their habitat. The technological world we live in sits on linear structures physically and mentally. On one side we have circles, on the other we have squares: for one to directly fit with the other, one has to dominate! Equality between the two may require to go into virtual mode: with a non competitive approach, one can go back and forth from one to the other and experience the journey. To start with the conception that one is right and the other wrong is not leading to solutions, to adopt one approach or the other according to circumstances would be more like it! We may like the idea, but have no illusion about a global application, we can then possibly make use of this concept at our level.
Im getting my bachelors in psychology but i am taking it in Spanish and while it’s my mother tongue and I though oh I speak Spanish I’m Hispanic well... I never went to a Spanish speaking school (born and raised in the states) and now I am having trouble understanding the more “eloquent” Spanish vocabulary that differs from the everyday Spanish I’m used to ....so here we are trying to teach myself in English through RUclips lol ...
Thank you. I am artist from brazil and now I want to do antropology. Great class, the only thing I have to say is that the video does not have subtitles in english... I am not so good in this languange, so, if you can do something I appreciate. The youtube puts automatically the legends, you just have to permit, agree when you post the video. 🦋
Thank you so much prof, for amazing lecture . I am anthropology student in Japanese university . I am looking for short term research exchange program some where native English country. please give me advice
"Scrap that part. That part doesn't exist." And yet they uploaded the thing unedited and tell me if this isn't the best part about the video after of course the very nicely and expressively put out lecture.
Cultura es:..."La resultante del esfuerzo hecho en la interacción social, política y económica de un conglomerado de seres que se identifican a sí mismos como un ente aparte"...
I just wanted to comment - the example at 15:00 of the underestimation by residents of their "consumption of beer" was not really the best example IMHO, simply because drinking is something most people grossly understate in general, just because it's not something you really want to brag about, unless you are like, waking up the next day after a frat party, lol
but yeah, I can also see how cultures might not want to admit some of their not so lovely customs and behaviors, too - unless, of course, to them it is perfectly normal to do so. In the case of alcohol, it is known by our society to not be a very healthy or positive thing to do much of, so yes, they will cover it up if they can.
Truly wish I could watch. Hopefully in the future you can add captions for hearing impaired. I can’t take in the full value of everything you’re saying because I can’t hear you. :(
For a science presenter to be credible they must be precise. This includes their language. I am regularly forced to tolerate without remark the sloppy pronunciation of "et cetera" as "ek setera". However when that sloppiness degenerates into abbreviating the phrase as "ect." then I must object. For science accurate observation precedes clear explanation.
So yes I am saying that if you weighed anthropology along those other sciences it would not be favoured and have got through everything prior. If I were lazier which I already am enough I could have gone and taken anthropology. I KNOW that and I am starting the third (final) level of pathophysiology and Ill tell it would have given me less work to do. It probably would if I did it now, although I am not going to opt to do such a thing instead
Who's this fella? Why does he have so many definitions that's "his own" definitions that, by his own words, don't agree with the definitions that're in his students' books?
In want to understand history better, like anthropology would do it. But 🤔 more important is to understand the brain nowadays. I don’t know people understand human behaviour and to get into that field with Professor Robert Sapolsky I have a long way to go. :( Lots of medicine involve but I’ll get there. I’ve got forensics to study for that 💔 And I hope as good as Professor Philip Zelikow to undertand human behaviour like part of history .. Aka: main goal: why are we so stupid.
I took this class but ended up dropping because it was too difficult for me. I ended up re-taking the class, coming in with a better understanding and passed with a B so happy
I wonder which part of the Philippines he is referring to. I'm from the Philippines and I haven't heard of such custom with the left and right hand. Nonetheless, great lecture for an introduction. Thanks.
Can anyone recommend any good books focusing around anthropology? I'm fascinated by differences in cultures from both psychological and narrative aspects. I'm thinking of studying it at Uni though i'd like to grasp a better idea of the subject without hitting the purely academic focused books like anthropology for dummies etc. Good video by the way!
I feel like been spying stalking sneaking on my sites and you still read like that you still don't dress you still talk like that still act like that I am so wrong I gotta doctorite in this
oh it was about different cultures! The lady from the dream don't ask! she had very striking eyes! and high cheek bones and dark hair! (8_+) okay i get the picture! you have skills no one can ignore! Just don't use them for war! (-_+) I'm not allowed to hurt living creatures but machines don't have souls!
If you are going there - keep in mind that anthropology isnt a science - even if it gets into bones and all that. Do not expect the medical facilities, hospital employers, or health care/information management programs to recognize it- that is not psychology which can be more of a science (although not always is that considered substantial) and it certainly is not biology which most medical or health professions want you to study or have a good background in unless you want to risk it in a specialized school like I did although I can have the mindset for the sciences. Some act as if it is scientific and it can be analyzed using the methods although it is a social science which often belongs with sociology and those sorts of fields. I am not saying it should not be looked into for interest if you want or if you are going more for social disciplines - it is more oriented to studying cultures for social reasons and I know people who study it. Do not expect it to count as a course to back or plar you for specialized school courses other than for graduate work in its own field.
First you say it's not a science and then you say it's a social science? Your views on science are obviously biased by your devotion to the natural sciences... The notion that eg the healthcare professions won't recognize an anthropological/ethnographic view as valuable is simple not true. In general many fields are looking to anthropology for innovative angles that cannot be found by any of the natural sciences. How would you ever describe and investigate that which is social without recognising social science?
In all Islamic societies people eat with their right hands , that's because our prophet prayers be upon him commend us to eat with the right, and to do all things that might get your hands dirty with your left hand.Religion in the Islamic world is main source of culture.
Is it normal for a 12 year old to be able to understand what he means, cause when I started school I found and anthropology book at school and checked it out having 30+ pages of info and my mom let me have her anatomy book. And I started studying in 4th grade. Found and website that has a thing that taught me how to put together and names of the bones.
Look up David Stewart, the youngest recipient of the Macarthur Genius Award as a high school student. He started studying Mayan Culture at 8 years old and doing glyph sketching at 12 years old. But, then it seems your interest is in Physical Anthropology. Maybe you should try Lee R. Burger and his recent finds in South Africa. Look up Rising Star Cave and homo nelida found in 2013. You should start with DAWN OF HUMANITY Nova. It can be found on UTUBE.
And neurology.. but that involves organics and anything you do affects the brain 🧠 for that you need lots of research. 💔 I do have to say I like neurosurgery 🤭 makes me hungry.
I think what he’s doing is using a book that’s been in use for what, 1000, 2000 years? Not that I use it fact but it can be used as a example of the way people thought and why they did the things they did.

Awe, I hope you’ve saved enough for college!!!
Vote for Bernie Sanders, socialists, and progressive Democrats and you just might get free college tuition.
Thank you for putting this video out for people like myself who love Anthropology but cannot afford to study it.

you can go to univeristy for free in Germany, France, Slovenia and many others
Yes, you can in my country too (Greece) but they don't accept everyone and the exams are ridiculously hard. Don't oversimplify things.
I'm sorry, I thought it had something to do with the price of studying in your country. Good luck with all that. Luckily there are many lectures on youtube, but still good luck
Starting an anthropology course soon and using these videos as a prep, very interesting!!
Now why would anyone downvote this? This is a good introduction to what seems like a great and exciting series. Thank you Prof. Paling!
What’s a downvote?
After watching this video I just decided what I’m major in 🎥 Anthropology 👏🏻
Professor Paling, this is a very good, concise introduction to Anthropology.
