- Bali's 'Crown Jewel': Padang Padang, was in fine form on the 9th of September - and since Kelly Slater was in town, it was no great surprise to see him make his way to the lineup for the morning session.
There was a stacked cast of barrel aficionados, and although it was one of the more congested lineups that we've seen this year, the sets were consistent and well stocked.
With the tide moving in during the day we decided to go film the Bombie at Uluwatu - so if you enjoy watching bomb sets and heavy beat-downs, you're going to be stoked with tomorrow night's edit.

Yip best edits. If you have the right camera you should upload these edits at 60FPS. So 1080p @60FPS, will look super crisp!
They must have went nuts knowing he was out there surfing with them. I first saw him at the OP Pro in Huntington Beach in 1990. Knew he was a stud and never figured he'd end up being who he became.

That blonde guy who's getting all the waves has the smoothest, most efficient style of any surfer I've seen lately. He doesn't overdo everything, no unnecessary moves, just the right ones. Kinda reminds me of Phil Edwards in the 1960s.

I think Kelly’s one of a few individuals able to step fresh off the jet to any surf spot in the world and immediately have the wave dialed-in like a seasoned local surfing his old home break.

Kelly is a wave, somehow is has tuned into the vibrations of the wave he surfs for he puts himself in positions that others would be tossed . It's like he's leashed to the barrel

I'm new to surfing, so I must be missing something, but to me it seems that some of the locals I've seen in previous SOB videos are faster and more fluid than Slater. He looks a bit rigid and jerky by comparison. Please correct me if I'm wrong, though.
Well spotted. The locals are smooth. This is not nearly the best of Slater though. The wave has many smaller bowels/sections than clearly visible on this footage, and the locals will know the subtle indicators and where to place them for each section. Locals often out surf the pros but at another spot they tend to suck (except SOB ;-). There were a few instances where Slater waited for the wave to build though, he also tends to surf shorter over responsive boards which is less smooth. If he was out on a step-up 6'6 /6'8 he would have carved it. He has recovered from breaking his foot in J-bay. Enjoy your surfing adventure Randy Evermore.
Could be age, could be the board.
I think it has alot to do with his board. He has an obviously smaller board than what is typical for a wave this size. He has alot less rail in the water so on waves like this all his movements will be less drawn out and smooth. Age does come into play as well I'm sure. He's getting up there.
I thought exactly the same, his movements are very sharp and precise without smoothness.I agree with the board theory, but my feelings tell me some of the locals are more connected to the wave with more beauty in there rides ...

@@Housepetsandfriends actually if you know an agent in Bali they can pull some strings and get you in but it's a beast. We are coming from Canada and spending about $300 USD on a multiple-entry visa. The visa website for Indonesia is supposed to shut down Sept 20th.
Fly through Japan if possible. There airport has covid testing down and you don't need to get tested on layovers like the Phillipines.
There's alot of hoops you gotta jump through to get your visa and you need a covid test before you leave and even then you may still get turned back but where there's a will there's a wave
