The most obnoxious thing about Shane Dawson (obnoxious, not horrifying, that list is much longer) is his habit of depicting himself as poor while sitting in his mansion or riding around in his golf cart. He wants sympathy for being poor from the people he's made millions off of. I can't deal with the self-absorption of this man.
Yeah, it's fucking amazingly tone deaf. And he's a part of the elite Old Money YTers, like come the fuck on; Tammany Hall is that a way, you poor poor disenfranchised multimillionaire! Now go get em!
Also the irony if him making a video trying to “expose” Jake Paul but Jake def has a cleaner track record than Shane lmao (The Paul Bros have still done some questionable and sick things propagated to their younger audiences dont get me wrong tho but Shane def i feel like has done worse) however i feel like his “JP Doc” was more so to attain clout from that fanbase than anything else.
@@micahcook2408 just commenting if someone hasn't heard, there's a credible article from this or last week on ny times on how jake paul has s*xually assaulted someone. i agree with your comment, just noting that jake paul is worse than just questionable.
I actually can’t believe my poor ass tolerated watching a rich man crying about not being rich enough and then making an ugly ass palette and I ate that shit up. I’m so embarrassed
Same but over time I came back to his videos as parodies of conspiracy theories and real ghost hunting because yeah I Don't think there is another way to watch him
I remember my girlfriend watching the Star documentary and I was just really confused as to what was going on to the point where I thought there was something I wasn't picking up. Joel's video helps shift the blame off myself but since then I thought I was just ignorant of these people's culture. Easy to get sucked into.
I promise you that I am loathe to defend Shane Dawson, but on this one thing, I can imagine that he didn't make any money from Hot Topic. I know several artists who were completely ripped off by Hot Topic. They are terrible. And Shane Dawson is also terrible and still a liar.
He’s crying about “being poor” while literally wearing a balenciaga hoodie After he drove there in his 130000$ car from his mansion Like he didn’t have a deal to have an Amazon merchandise store A book deal Has made music And made a movie
It literally makes me so mad. Even when I was a fan and was watching his video series for the first time, it put a bad taste in my mouth. I remember watching him have his little “breakdown” about money, and I was thinking “He lives in a mansion with an expensive car and is calling himself poor, and meanwhile my family is over here struggling to find a used car that we can afford because ours broke down.” And I’m not complaining. I’m by no means poor, we get by just fine. But to see him whining about being “poor”...it’s really disgusting.
@@mayorlewispurpleshorts9693 it infuriates me too. I became aware that he was shit thankfully a year after he manipulated millions of new viewers including my entire grade at school into supporting his content for some reason. So glad I snapped out of his bullshit earlier than most and learned to call him out on this. My dad had to get three separate jobs to get health insurance that would pay for necessary rehab to help me function and learn how to adapt with my disability. My insurances literally were sending a clear message to a 15 year old who’s basic functionality was rapidly deteriorating and was on the rapid downwards spiral working her way to becoming bed bound by 16 (I still am at 19.) that my life was not worth it and my quality of life was worthless. It felt like I was getting the message time after time again that my functionality meant nothing all while getting abused medically in the hospital the rehab was at and their other programs. If we had had the money it wouldn’t have been so hard to get basic necessary healthcare. To get treatment to prevent ending up where I am now. To go out of state regardless being born ina city with “the best hospital in the world” and world class hospitals to only be abused by them. We could’ve gotten the genetic testing which we’ve been doing for a year and still aren’t even close to being done because of how much insurance refuses to approve anything necessary. We could’ve put me in the hospital im in now and gotten proper healthcare without the abuse and not end up with me reduced to existence. My parents could get their own individual genetic testing. They wouldn’t have to worry about their medication copays and our non existent income from both being now fully disabled. It still is insane even with a care coordinator a proper medical team who has my health and best interest in heart and a case worker all doing the most. We’re lucky to be on government insurance now but that’s still insane to work with getting basic needs fulfilled. At the time of this going down I was really starting to get turned off by Shane videos. they went from a mindless escape to something that actively angered me. He was riding in his gwagon with his 6 dollar coffee in a Gucci jumpsuit crying about being poor and I’d just get so angry. He’s obviously rich and is acting as if he’s not to appear relatable while in reality slapping all viewers in the face like it’s some joke. like he wasn’t a walking status symbol of privilege and I just wanted money to relieve my parents stress and to get my life back because losing my life at that time was starting to make others get heavily affected by it around me. Yet here’s him being beyond icky attitude wise to his friends and being rude to people around him in general and having this odd “humor” and then making the internet try and feel bad for his privileged rich white peers who fucked up and got a reasonably angry response from everyone all while demonizing already stigmatized disorders and glorifying other creators who have done beyond horrible things and some who are just straight up terrible humans (I think tana is the only series he’s done where she could be redeemable. She seems like she’s starting to grow up and actually grow and as long as she’s moving forward to get healthy mature and heal. I hope she continues to make baby steps.) . Shane just has made a career off of insulting his audience (even committing CSA to fans.) and playing the invalid sympathy card and I just don’t understand that man and hope he doesn’t have a chance at ever sliming his way back. Especially since he wants us to forget so he won’t have to apologize
I'm not defending him nor saying he is poor, but just because you own expensive things doesn't mean you're good with money management. You can own a multi million dollar house filled with Gucci and expensive electronics and have a pretty empty bank account. That happened to glitterforever17, happens to NBA players all the time too. He's not poor, as in scraping pennies to get by. But he's also not Jeffree or Kylie level, and in the grand scheme of things, may not have *that* much money.
remember when shane dawson capitalized off of bobby burns in his "meeting my hater" series and effectively turned his audience against bobby who only ever critiqued shane's content and then allowed bobby to make videos on his channel for some reason and, because his audience hated bobby for being a "shane anti", they sent bobby massive amounts of hate which caused bobby to have several mental breakdowns and shane, in response, just kicked bobby off his channel and never talked to him again. real empath vibes
I wondered why the hell he would even get wrapped up in making a whole documentary about his hater when every other youtuber would make a single video about it and move on. It's not like he had serious allegations against Shane.
The most disgusting part of that “documentary” is when he starts screaming at the website employees on the phone. If he cared about that girl in the hospital getting the palette he should have sent her one, it’s all performance.
Oh yeah and when the designers pitched ideas for the look of the packaging he had a tantrum like a child and it was so embarrassing and immature I felt bad for the employees who had to deal with an incompetent client. From my memory, he just didn't like anything so he became overdramatic and pouted when the least he could do is give feedback. He truly thinks the world revolves around him and everyone should cater to his thoughts.
The second he turned on the camera to record this documentary it was for performance. If his reason for any of the business decisions was solely for profit, he would not have recorded any of it as that was an excess expense. If he was doing it "for the good" of any entity, he would have saved the money that it cost to produce the documentary and spent it to actually benefit it. I despise people like him, they are leeches on our society and are allowed to thrive from peoples' insecurities and desire to project themselves onto some kind of "success"
There are dozens of us! It also made me very angry and aggressive. I want to go and smash all their shit with a baseball bat. (Not actually going to do anything like that - it's just a fantasy. I can't afford to fly to the states.)
I get what you're saying but I feel like hating them gives them power too. I'd much rather just ignore all things JarJar Starfruits/minions and keep it moving.
Isn't it possible to say he discovered he loved it and that it was a great way to earn a ton of money? I don't think this is weird at all. It's how people start companies all the time.

It’s so wild to me that Shane Dawson literally made a movie and has published a book but can still pretend like he’s had no business deals before ✨makeup✨
Shane Dawson is honestly the best case for communism that I’ve ever seen. Any system that allows a garbage person like him to achieve his level of success needs to be destroyed.
i’m sorry but when jeffrey was rearranging the pallet colors and shane was looking at him like he was some kind of guinness mastermind god was the funniest thing i’ve seen 😭

Those scenes of them walking through the factory with the workers just being like background scenery to their success is an existential capitalist horror I never thought I’d see on RUclips. Edit: I’ve seen some comments asking why it’s weird because it’s just a job or about How It’s Made shows where they show the same thing. It wasn’t about just showing the factory and the workers, that in itself would have been just cool behind the scenes footage a la How It’s Made. It was the framing that the documentary gave it of it being a moment of Shane and Jeffery looking out on their empire like “look at all this work being done for YOU, you deserve this labor for your success.” That’s why I personally found it so gross and I assume why Joel did as well.
That is the part of that "documentary" that REALLY sticks with me. It doesnt encapsulate every single thing I can't stand about the two of them, but my God is it a big one.
I've seen the making of Dawson's "Not Cool." It perfectly illustrates why Dawson's storytelling and filmmaking talent is wanting - he's utterly un-coachable. He takes no advice on board, can't stand criticism, and thinks he knows better than everyone. You can't mold that kind of blind arrogance, and he will never grow as a creator.
I will never forget when Shane did a flat earth conspiracy "documentary" with his brother who proposed the idea that the BLM protests were a plant by the government to distract us from the "bigger issue". Of the earth being flat. And Shoehorn Dickson had the most sincerely scared reaction. I remember thinking, "this is so irresponsible"
Man, even when i watched him back in the day i thought his conspiracy theory videos were so irresponsible, when he brought out his flat earther brother i had to stop watching💀
but even then he treated his friends horribly, i can’t think of 1 person who he was genuinely friends with who didn’t later come out saying he treated them like trash or they are equally a terrible person

That was so fucking strange to see any mental health "professional" go along with just for some Shane Dawson clout
Knowing the training it takes to be certain types of mental health professional this doesn't surprise me. I know in the UK that therapist is not a protected title, anyone with a days training can call themselves a therapist. I imagine it's the same in the US

Honestly, I would legitimately also like to hear what it is about that painting that speaks to him. Based on some of his other videos, he has, at least, three or four separate prints of it; two of which visible in this video. Something about it must hold some deeper relevance or impact for him, right?
I've been hearing that and I'm wondering how he honestly thought his fans would miss that?? Like surely the majority of them would have sought out his merch and known. I genuinely can't figure how he thought that was going to work out.

That was always my biggest gripe with these videos. I’d always skip through all the fluff and unnecessary stuff he added in. Seemed like he added a bunch of nonsense just for a longer video.
"I can take the hit" says Jeffree, as if he's losing money. But he's not, he's just making a slightly smaller profit than he could be. That's what taking a hit means to him, knowing that there's still money in the world he hasn't acquired.

The only thing I remember from a Jeffree Star video is when he made a video about his dog that died, and that's obviously very sad, but he said "We rescued her from a breeder" and that's literally, word for word an exchange from Chris Flemings comedy masterpiece Gayle, minus the part where Gayle yells at her husband to shut up when he chimes in with the fact the dog's from a breeder.
_Wild Chris Fleming fan sighting_ But true, both Shane and Jeffree are terrible people and try to manipulate people with specific phrasing among other tactics.
There are two scenes that stuck out to keep the most. The first is the factory scene where the people working their asses off are utilized as moving wallpaper I also think its important to notice how none of them look up. The second is when the site crashes and the "sweet uwu empath boy" is yelling for them to fix it. Reminiscent of that show where he made the film and was treating people like shit and acting like they should be lucky to even work with them.

Even though I never watched Shane Dawson or his series, I watched a video called "Jeffere Star making Shane feel poor for five min straight" or something and was also reeled into the idea that Shane is just some average joe(l). But then in the comments someone said how Shane is rich as well and is a long time youtuber and how he pretends to be "just like us" and that sort of snapped me out of ever thinking of him in a relatable/good light
Shane Dawson had a networth of $12 million back in 2018 and that was before his makeup line. To put his earnings into perspective. Shane Dawson makes $1,300 an hour. Every single hour of the day regardless of if he is working or not.
I don't think most people who are empaths even realize they're empaths. They probably just think they're 'sensitive' and feel bad about themselves because mean people shame them for crying too much. And then try not to talk about it because they feel bad. I know that's what I'd think if I were an empath. I would 100% just assume I'm overly emotional.
A bit unrelated, but the best thing I've ever read from a self-proclaimed empath was their post saying "Her mom died, and as an empath, I could feel she was upset." Yeah, no shit, dude.
Jeffree acting like his cost of making is soooo expensive and he doesn’t charge too much is so dumb. Like he needs $20 to make palettes but he sells his shit for like $50-60 :) That’s millions and millions in profit lmao and I get that’s how business works but him acting like such a Saint is not it
i used to love shane dawson and i when the topic of 9/11 came up, i always thought that it was true about them being bombs and not planes. i genuinely believed that. last year on 9/11, people were obviously talking about it and i mentioned how it was caused by bombs. after i said that, someone asked me where i got my source from. i thought for so long bc i genuinely did not know. i just now realized that for a big portion of my life i was thinking that 9/11 was caused by bombs and the planes were cgi. shane dawson has a terrible impact on people.
I see a lot of similarities between Shane and Doug, they’re both incapable of doing the thing they’re most passionate about (filmmaking) because they’re so narcissistic that they’re incapable of learning how
only because d’angelo wallace’s videos on shane are going down. his video was WAY more cutting imo, i’m still sad to see it’s gone (or going away, i haven’t checked if d’angelo has actually taken that one down specifically yet)
I’ve been watching a lot of videos like this talking about Shane Dawson and his documentaries and it’s so weird to look back on how I saw the documentary when I first watched it and realize how brainwashed I was into thinking that it was so good and genuine. I begged my mom to get me the pallet and even though it sold out she was able to get the mini pallet. I don’t want to throw it out since I know how hard my mom worked to be able to get it but I feel bad for having it and not realizing sooner that I was being manipulated.
Hey, it’s definitely okay to keep your pallet. If you like the make up, use it :)) it’s already bought and if it has sentimental value from your mom then that makes it even better. You might as well use it if you have it. Don’t guilt trip yourself, you are okay
Shane Dawson is the kind of youtuber who just tries whatever, sees what works to get him views, keeps doing that until it doesn’t work anymore, and then moves on to the next thing. He’s all about the views and the $$$
The only time he was ever truly passionate about his work and even did it FOR FREE FOR YEARS...was when he was creating cruel racist black face content 😀
Funny cause that's what helped lead to his downfall. New people who liked his "conspiracy" and "documentaries" discovered his old content and called him out on it.
The best things to come out from this "documentary" were Shane's ugly ass make-up looks that he was forced to do because he needed to pretend he actually gave a shit about make-up. The fact that he made a whole MUA channel too and only uploaded one (1) video lmao
When Katie reads from the book about traits of a “sociopath” it looks to me like Shane is realizing he’s hearing himself described. He grins and laughs like “omg that’s me”. And from what I’ve seen of Shane’s disgusting content and behaviour, I’d say he knows himself quite well.
Yeah and another thing about that documentary is it's portrayal of aspd. Also in the psychologists personal video she was extremely polarizing toward them. She treated them as bad people rather than people with a dosorder
shane dawson is also punished in this manner, just for reference. nothing worse than encountering someone who's like you, especially if you're a piece of shit
The scene of Shane Dawson and Jeffree Star in their hideous track suits overseeing the makeup production where you know the workers are making nothing is the most unintentionally artistic thing Shane Dawson has ever made

I might have heard some names in passing and about some of their 'scandals' but I never really knew anything about them. Maybe I'm just too old for this but I find them terrifying. I used to love watching Shanes conspiracy videos when I was younger, but now that you played that clip its actually really weird how so many of his conspiracies were about like pretty serious topics and eve though he always said they were 'neither confirmed nor denied', his delivery made them feel real.
i never watched anything by him besides the eugenia cooney video but holy shit that clip of him being like Baby's First Truther is so bizarre. that's such a clear "explaining a difficult thing to little kids" voice and expression

This "documentary" could have been good too, which is disappointing. He could have followed the product down the supply line and ACTUALLY show how big of a process it is. Film the original pitch, the finances, the design, the marketing plan, the photoshoots, the manufacturing, interview those women on the line that are pushed into the background behind them, discuss how much everyone on each of those levels is getting paid. That would be interesting!

My alternative title: "why I left the makeup community forever and have never watched a single makeup video again even though I never watched large problematic creators in the first place but that's just emblematic of how deep the rot was to my soul and their very existence just sucked any last remnants of my joy in playing with makeup from me".

i was actively a shane fan at the time this series came out and EVEN THEN i recognised it for the cash-grab it was. he never had any business in beauty, but he did a previous series with Jeffree Star and saw how much money he was making. i just stuck to the garrett & drew vids.

I used to say this stuff when it came out, Shane & Jeffree and the whole thing was repellent, classest, misogynistic etc and people told me I was wrong. I'm validated, thank you 😅
It always really bothered me that Shane kept saying he never worked with a store or sold merch before because his merch was literally in hot topic back in the early 2010s

That wasn’t the point tho? It was that he was screwed over in ownership of a company he co-founded. They literally say at the end of the movie that they settled “for an undisclosed amount” and anyone with a brain can realize that it was for a lot of money
Forever feeling vindicated that I didn't like either of them.

He (and his audience) broke Bobby Burns. Everything went wrong for that boy after he met Shane.
The most disgusting part of that “documentary” is when he starts screaming at the website employees on the phone. If he cared about that girl in the hospital getting the palette he should have sent her one, it’s all performance.

I'm sure Jeffree and his team knew how misleading it was to say, "all of the materials are high quality" followed by saying the palette cost 20 dollars to make. One would only assume that 20 was referring to cost of materials... yet considering cogs (cost of goods) and/or any other fees, the cost of materials could easily be as low as 10 dollars or less in reality.
