  • Cast albums are often how we first experience a musical. In this episode, we explore the history of the cast album, learning about visionary record producers like Goddard Lieberson and Thomas Z. Shepard, and how their historic recording sessions influenced this incredible art form. And as a very special treat, I am so happy to have Bill Rosenfield (Former A&R Director of RCA), and Kurt Deutsch (President of Ghostlight Records) as special guests, sharing their experiences in producing cast recordings like “Legs Diamond”, “The Last Five Years”, and “In The Heights”.

    Cast albums are particularly relevant as guide tracks for amateur theatre groups when licensing the show.
    Some will even use the karaoke tracks directly.

    This spoke to me because I am the proud owner of a collection of over 50 Original Cast Recordings. Most of which I purchased after watching the Tony's and before I ever saw the show. I do miss the days when songs from musicals actually got radio play, like songs from Hair and Jesus Christ Superstar.

      Is it the radio stations not playing good music, or musicals not producing good songs?

      @@robertewalt7789 Maybe it’s because listing something as a musical don’t make as much money as they did back then. There are plenty of songs in more recent that are good and can even fit into a regular pop vibe.

    Your channel is one of the best (FEW) good things to come out of the pandemic. So many interesting details here. I wonder if the original limitations of the recording length of 78s contributed to the original notion of 'singles' needing to be under 4 minutes? Or perhaps this is related to the limited capacity of the 45 RPM records? Also, I believe the multiple-record necessity of 78s being packaged together in a book-like presentation lead to a recording being called 'an album.' I remember my parents and grandparents having these -- back when turntables had 3 settings: 33/45/78...

    Thanks for this. When I first bought the "Follies" Original Cast LP, at an independent record store, the owner told me how the LP had been butchered, and that the only way to hear the complete recording was to buy it on reel-to-reel tape. (In those days you could still buy commercial recordings on reel-to-reel). Was he correct?

    Awesome video! I did a presentation at an MT conference a couple years ago on the various Pal Joey, Call Me Madam, and Kiss of the Spider Woman albums. To clarify, Harold Lang & Vivienne Segal couldn’t record the Pal Joey revival for Capitol because Columbia still had them under contract! Capitol very much wanted them for that revival album and suffered for it.

    I'm not sure it's true that the AFM strike is what led to the Oklahoma! cast album, though that seems to have recently become the standard history since the book Broadway to Main Street was published in 2018. It seems odd to me that it would take 80 years for anyone to figure out where this process started, considering the many books on musicals and the frequency with which Oklahoma!'s stance as the (fabled) first original cast album is referenced. Neither Rodgers' autobiography nor Hugh Fordin's bio on Hammerstein (nor any book written on the team) reference the strike. I don't doubt the strike might have played some part in the process, but Jack Kapp who produced it, had already produced both a Show Boat revival cast recording with its cast (only two discs, I believe, and with studio orchestrations) and This is the Army (with both the original cast and the original orchestrations). He was clearly pushing for an accurate representation of Broadway scores on disc and Decca had slowly been giving in to his demand. I think his drive has more to do with the recording than the strike.

    • @StagedRight
      @StagedRight  2 года назад +1

      Rodgers autobiography is rather skimp on a lot details in general. I can't speak for the Hammerstein biography. It is an interesting example of how history is told by the accounts we have. if they aren't accounted for, do they have any weight?

    • @christophersmith3341
      @christophersmith3341 2 года назад

      @@StagedRight Agree about Rodger's bio, but it's still odd that basically no biographies on the partnership have mentioned it AND the strike had been settled (with Decca, at least) prior to the recording date. Like I said, think something somewhere between the traditional tale (Kapp wanted to preserve the show authentically) and the newer version of the tale (recording date set too soon after the strike was resolved for new accompaniment to be written) is most likely the case.
